2 ZERO WASTE IN THE DISTRICT OF NORTH VANCOUVER OUR COMMITMENT Environmental sustainability is a key goal in our Official Community Plan. Your ongoing efforts to reduce the amount of material that ends up as garbage will help us get there. LOVE FOOD HATE WASTE Did you know that Metro Vancouver households throw away 100,000 tonnes of edible food and drink every year? Each day we pour out 70,000 glasses of milk and throw away over 55,000 apples! For tips on how to reduce your food waste and save on your grocery bills visit lovefoodhatewaste.ca. Thanks to you, in 2014 we directed about 67 percent of our waste away from the landfill, but our target for 2020 is 80 percent. With work still to be done, we'll continue to develop innovative programs and solutions to manage our waste materials. Remember, when it comes to waste reduction, small changes can make a big difference. WHAT DOES BEST BEFORE REALLY MEAN? Do you know the difference between best before and expiry dates? Expiration dates refer to the last day a product is safe to consume. Best before dates refer to the date a product will be at its peak flavour and nutritional value. Most products are safe to consume after their best before date. To learn how long you can store certain foods, visit lovefoodhatewaste.ca. 4 COEXISTING WITH WILDLIFE Many wildlife encounters on the North Shore can be prevented by responsibly managing garbage, food scraps, and other attractants. HOW TO MANAGE YOUR GARBAGE & FOOD SCRAPS Place your garbage, recycling, and green waste curbside on collection day between 5:30am - 7:30am (never leave it out overnight) Freeze food waste and add it to your green can on the morning of your collection (this helps reduce odours that attract animals) Keep your garbage cans, green cans, and recycling containers clean (rinsing your cans and containers helps reduce odours) Store your garbage, recycling, and green waste inside your house, garage or secure enclosure until the morning of collection Report a bear sighting to BEAR (2327). For information on coexisting with bears visit northshorebears.com. HOW TO MANAGE OTHER ATTRACTANTS remove outdoor fridges & freezers keep pet food inside clean barbecues after use pick fruit & berries as soon as they are ripe remove bird feeders during bear season compost correctly CURBSIDE SETOUT HOW TO SET OUT YOUR CURBSIDE MATERIALS Place curbside between 5:30am and 7:30am on your collection day Set side by side in a straight line for quick, easy collection Place blue or yellow bags beside, not inside, the blue box Remove bungee cords, straps, or other tie-downs from your cans or carts (if tie-downs are not removed your materials will not be collected) Reminder Never Miss Collection Day Again!
