Will my recycling be picked up on the same day as my regular trash service day? Your collection day will be the same for each service, but recycling is picked up every other week (bi-weekly). On your designated recycling day, trash and recycling cans will both be picked up on the same day before 7 p.m., but not all at the same time as Waste Management uses two different trucks to pick up household trash versus recycling. If you are unsure whether trash/recycling day falls on a green or gold week call Waste Management at When is my pick-up day? Waste Management picks up trash weekly and recycling every other week. If you are unsure of your trash and recycling day or if your pickup day is on a green or gold week, contact Waste Management at Trash service is delayed by one day if a holiday falls on or before your normally scheduled trash day. Holidays observed are New Year s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Does my recycling get picked up on a green or gold week? Call Waste Management at What if I already have trash cans of my own? As part of the City s trash and recycling program residents need to use only the Waste Management trash and recycling cans provided, otherwise they will not be picked up. Residents who need more capacity beyond the free standard service can pay for additional can service for $2.80 a month or less, depending on the size of the can and will be billed by Waste Management on a quarterly basis. Refer to the Commerce City Waste Management Program - New Resident Packet for more can size information and additional services. Do I have to use Waste Management cans, or can I place trash bags on the curb? Yes, you must use the Waste Management cans and all household trash/yard waste must fit inside the can with the lid closed; you may not place trash bags on the curb for pickup. Place your trash cans curbside by 7 a.m. on your pick-up day but no earlier than 7 p.m. the
evening before. Make sure they are next to the curb, 3 feet from other cans, parked cars and other obstructions, with handles facing the house. They missed my home! What do I do? To report a missed pick-up, please call Waste Management directly at Trash cans need to be placed curb-side by 7 a.m. on your pick-up day, but no earlier than 7 p.m. the evening before and Waste Management has until 7 p.m. to pick it up. If your trash or recycle can is not serviceable or is too full, the driver will leave a hanging tag on your can explaining the reason. Can I place overflow household trash in my recycling can? No. The recycling can is for recyclable materials only. Please do not place household trash in the recycling can. Drivers can identify if household trash is being placed in the recycling can and will notify the City. Residents could lose their curbside recycling privilege if they do not follow the recycling program guidelines. What items are ineligible for pick up? Pesticides, paint products, oil, concrete, automotive batteries, biological/commercial/industrial or medical waste, car tires, electronics (including televisions or computers). Please call Tri-County Health at for further information regarding hazardous waste disposal. What is a hanging can tag? If your trash or recycle can is not serviceable, the driver will leave a hanging can tag on your can(s). The tag provides a reason why your can was not serviced. What qualifies as a large-item pickup and how many can I use per year? Items that do not fit in the Waste Management trash can with the lid closed are considered large-items. Residents are allowed five large-item pickups per calendar year and each pickup can be subdivided into two items. For example, a mattress and a couch will count as one largeitem if requested for pickup at the same time. Will my large item pickup be picked up on the same day as my regular trash service day? Your collection day will be the same for each service. You must call Waste Management at twenty-four hours in advance of your regularly scheduled trash day to schedule your large item pickup. Your regular trash and large item will be picked up before 7 p.m., but
not all at the same time. Waste Management uses two different trucks to pick up household trash versus large items. What if I want a different size can than the 96-gallon can provided? You will automatically receive one 96-gallon recycle can and one 96-gallon trash can. If you prefer smaller sized cans, you may call Waste Management at , and swap to a smaller size. 64 and 32 gallon sizes are available. Waste and recycling needs vary throughout the year depending on seasonal changes. For example, yard waste in the spring/summer/fall and during holiday celebrations. Be sure to choose your can based on your highest needs. Please note that if you overfill your can, your trash may not get picked up. I ordered cans but I have not received them yet. What do I do? Call Waste Management at How often can I exchange can sizes for trash and/or recycling? Residents are limited to one exchange per year. Changes in can size are subject to Waste Management delivery fees. If you cancel or exchange cans more than one time per year, charges will apply. Container size Cost/month Cost/ year 32-gallon $2.50 $ gallon $2.65 $ gallon $2.80 $33.60 My home is located in a development that is governed by a homeowners association (HOA), am I still eligible to participate in Commerce City s Trash & Recycling Program? Commerce City s trash and recycling service includes properties within Commerce City limits whether part of an HOA or not; properties that reside in unincorporated Adams County are not eligible for the program. Please submit a citizen request online (online request) or call Commerce City Public Works at to confirm eligibility.
What if I have a hard time storing my 96-gallon cans so they are hidden from street view? Please contact your homeowners association for further details. My HOA required me to purchase a Waste Management can before the current service was implemented. What should I do with it? There are a few different things you can do with your existing Waste Management can: Use it as a second can for additional trash (fees apply); call Waste Management at to get set up with additional can service. Schedule a large-item pickup If it fits in the recycling can (yellow lid), then you can recycle it. Use it for storage or other personal uses. Give it to a friend, relative, etc. who lives in another community. Sell it to someone. Unfortunately, there is no reimbursement for Waste Management cans that have already been purchased by residents. Any can that was previously purchased by the homeowner belongs to the homeowner. The trash program requires that all household trash, including yard waste, must fit into the trash can. What if my yard waste does not fit into the trash can? Yes, all household trash, including yard waste, must fit into your trash can. Specifically, yard waste must be bagged first then put into the trash can, not the recycle can. If you are unable to fit yard waste into your trash can: Utilize one of the City s green yard waste drop-off days that are held periodically throughout the year. Acquire additional can service from Waste Management (fees apply). Install a mulching blade on the lawn mower Call Waste Management at hours in advance of your trash day to schedule a large-item pickup. Will you pick up yard clippings? Yes. Yard clippings, such as grass and leaves must be bagged and tied securely then placed inside of your Waste Management issued trash can. Please make sure the lid is completely closed. Yard clippings such as grass and leaves that do not fit into the can with the lid closed can be scheduled for a large-item pickup. You may also want to consider obtaining an additional can through Waste Management (fees apply) for overflow yard waste.
What should I do with tree limbs? Tree limbs may be placed into the trash can if the lid can still be closed. Tree Limbs can be disposed of as a large item pick up. Residents receive five large-item pickups a year and must call Waste Management 24 hours in advance of their trash day to schedule, In order for tree limbs to be picked up as a large-item, tree limbs must be cut no longer than 4 feet in length, tied and bundled, no bigger than 18 inches in diameter and no more than 40 pounds per bundle. What if I don t have space for two 96-gallon cans? If you prefer smaller sized cans, you may call Waste Management at and swap to smaller size cans. 64 and 32 gallon sizes are available. I am moving out of my home and need to discontinue service. How do I do it? The only service you will need to discontinue is your additional can service, if you have it. Call Waste Management at to notify them. The cans the City provided must remain at the residence to which they are assigned. I am a homeowner and I rent out property. If my home is vacant, can I discontinue service? There is no need to discontinue service, however please be certain to notify your tenants that move out to leave the cans on the property for the next tenant to use. What if trash/recycling cans are not on the rental property premises when I move in? If cans were originally delivered to the property and are now missing, the property owner is to call the City at to report the missing cans. A police report may need to be filed with the Commerce City Police Department (link to police report request here) and provided to the City. The City will then request Waste Management deliver replacement cans to the property. The resident may place trash sacks on the curb for pickup until they receive their new cans. If I move, can I take the Waste Management cans with me? No. The cans provided by the City must remain at the residence to which they are assigned and any additional cans you are paying Waste Management to service must be returned to Waste Management. What if I live in unincorporated Adams County but have a Commerce City address?
Please submit a citizen request online (online request) or call Commerce City Public Works at to confirm eligibility. Why should I recycle? Recycling preserves natural resources, extends the life of our landfills and helps the City keeps service costs down. By recycling, residents will also save energy and conserve resources for future generations. What can I recycle? Acceptable items include newspaper, office paper, tin/steel and aluminum cans, junk mail, phone books, magazines, glass bottles, cardboard boxes, catalogs, chipboard packaging and plastic (#1 through and #7). Shredded paper must be contained in a paper bag before placing in the recycle bin. Refer to page 7 of the New Resident Packet for list of recyclables. Where can I drop off recycling free of charge? Recycling service is provided by the City at no charge to you as part of the curbside trash program. Use the can with the yellow lid for recycling; it is picked up every other week on your regular trash collection day. There are also a few free recycling drop-off facilities. Residents can visit the Waste Management website ( and enter their ZIP codes to search for locations, materials accepted and operation hours. Waste Management delivered cans to my home that I did not request. What should I do? Call Waste Management at How long does it take for new cans to be delivered? Your new can should be delivered on or about your next collection day. Contact Waste Management directly at for specific delivery information. I submitted a request through Waste Management to have Waste Management cans removed from my property, but they are not picking them up. What should I do?
