2 WHY SHOULD WE RECYCLE? IT S THE LAW. AND THERE ARE OTHER BENEFITS, TOO! The most obvious reason to recycle is that IT IS THE LAW. WHAT S AVAILABLE TO US? ACUA OFFERS A VARIETY OF SERVICES TO BUSINESSES Businesses can take advantage of the following services to make the most of their recycling program: Your business is doing its part to help New Jersey reach its 60 percent recycling reduction goal. FREE Waste Audits Recycling may actually reduce the cost of doing business. When a business recycles, there is less trash to throw away, reducing the monthly cost to have trash hauled for disposal. For every ton of material recycled within municipal borders, communities can receive money from the state. Through the Municipal Tonnage Grant Program, money is given back to municipal recycling programs and used to enhance efforts. Atlantic County is the only county in the entire state which collects most businesses recycling at no cost! Recycling conserves natural resources and saves energy. Manufacturing new paper from recycled paper rather than virgin materials saves one ton of newspaper, 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, three barrels of oil, and 10,401 kilowatt hours of electricity. Not only does recycling save an abundance of natural resources, it also reduces air pollution! Your business will get positive publicity! 4 WHERE CAN I RECYCLE...? WHAT TO DO WITH ITEMS NOT PICKED UP CURBSIDE KEYS TO ONGOING SUCCESS IMPLEMENTING AND MONITORING YOUR PROGRAM Disposal resources are available for the recyclable items that ACUA does not pick up from your establishment: Flourescent Lamps and Ballasts: For NJDEP s Hazardous Waste Lamp Recycling Facilities, see Ink Cartridges: Visit to learn more. Hazardous Waste: To find information on hazardous waste disposal, go to Electronics: ACUA no longer accepts electronics for recycling. According to law, manufacturers will be required to take on this responsibility. Residents may take electronics to participating Goodwill and Best Buy locations for disposal. For a full list, visit Earth911.com. Shredding: Career Opportunity Development Incorporated (CODI) in Egg Harbor City offers shredding services to businesses and individuals. Monthly business plans are also available. Call for more information. ACUA operates a state-of-the-art landfill at its Haneman Environmental Park in Egg Harbor Twp. Designate recycling coordinator(s) This person or group is responsible for starting the program, building support and enthusiasm, and monitoring progress. 2. Do a waste audit A waste audit involves looking at your trash through the eyes of a recycler. The goal is to determine which materials should be separated and recycled as part of your program. 3. Get employees on board An announcement should be made to all employees informing them about the program, why your organization will recycle, and the importance of doing so. 4. Additional resources Recyclable materials not collected by ACUA include food waste, construction debris (concrete, brick, asphalt, wood), wood pallets, and vegetative waste. ACUA does, however, accept many of these items at its Environmental Park on Delilah Rd. in Egg Harbor Township. 5. Recycling receptacles Although ACUA provides recycling containers for outside collection, they are not intended for inside use. Fortunately, office supply, home improvement, and even hardware stores now produce recycling containers. Determine the best location for containers. If employees have to walk far to throw away their recyclables, they may not do it. Try to place recycling containers near trash receptacles. 6. Monitoring and evaluation Evaluate what works for your business and where problems exist. This data serves as the basis for effective communication efforts and program improvements!
