1 The Pennsylvania State University Offi ce of Physical Plant PURPOSE Waste and Recycling Station Design Guidelines To advance the progress of Penn State s Sustainability Strategic Plan. To facilitate the effi cient and safe collection of refuse, recyclable, and compostable commodities by leveraging institutional knowledge of maintenance and operations procedures. To increase the recycling participation rate of building users through consistent graphic treatment on signage. To reduce operating costs to the university. To improve aesthetic quality of interior spaces by providing clean, consolidated, well designed, and conveniently located receptacles. HOW TO USE This document is intended as a guideline for the design of a series of recycling station types. The designs meet the safety, operational, and aesthetic needs of the university. Consultants to the university are strongly encouraged to plan for recycling station location and design at the earliest possible time in the process of delivering a building design. 2 Type 1 Receptacle - Built-in Built-in stations to be designed and bid with other casework in new construction or major renovation projects. All public spaces to be equipped with built-in recycling stations. Coordinate location(s) with OPP staff. Design, materials and fi nishes of station to match or complement the interior decor. Stations include recycling commodities Organic Waste/Compost and Trash (land fi ll). Provide (6) six standard commodity openings sized per this document and in the correct order, plus an Organic Waste/Compost section with an interior partition wall and solid hinged top lid to mitigate the spread of odors. Top surface material to be determined by architect. Station to have hinged front door panel for container access. Wall surface area above each opening must be allocated for placement of standard signage. Signs to be provided by OPP. Commercially manufactured rigid plastic liners with height not to exceed 30 and capacity at or near 23 gallons must be accommodated. Business Building Katz Building For illustration purposes only. Newly constructed stations must comply with the requirements for design, opening confi guration and signage.

3 Type 2 Receptacle - Credenza In high profi le public spaces that cannot accommodate built-in station(s), a credenza unit may be acceptable. Coordinate location(s) with OPP staff. Design, materials and fi nishes of station to match or complement the interior decor. Stations include recycling commodities Organic Waste/Compost and Trash (land fi ll). Provide (6) six standard commodity openings sized per this document and in the correct order, plus an Organic Waste/Compost section with an interior partition wall and solid hinged top lid to mitigate the spread of odors. 4 Type 3 Receptacle - Cube In locations where built-ins or credenzas are deemed by OPP to be unnecessary, the option of commercially manufactured receptacles may be considered. Design, materials and fi nishes of station to match or complement the interior decor. Submit detailed specifi cation information including size and color of proposed receptacle to OPP for review and approval. Customization of stock designs may be required to meet university requirements. Note: Height of receptacle cannot exceed 30. Hinged top or side panel access are acceptable Receptacle must accommodate a rigid plastic liner No interior bag retainer bands will be accepted Top opening size and configuration must comply with university standards Provide (6) six receptacles with opening and one receptacle for Organic Waste/Compost with a solid hinged top lid to mitigate the spread of odors Wall surface area above each opening must be allocated for placement of standard signage. 5 Type 4 Receptacle - Plastic In service areas, kitchens, and break rooms or in locations where less than a full seven commodity station is required, the use of plastic receptacles may be acceptable. The 23 gallon Slim Jim, as manufactured by Rubbermaid Commercial Products, is the university standard. Receptacles manufactured by others will be considered if size and capacity requirements are met. Specifi cation: 20 wide x 11 deep x 30 high 23 gallon capacity Refuse and recycle commodities - blue (no lid ) Compost unit - green (with hinged lid) Containers to be free of symbols or logos Full stations include (7) commodities including an Organic Waste/Compost receptacle with a solid lid. Partial stations to be determined by OPP staff. Wall surface area above each receptacle must be allocated for placement of standard signage. Signs to be provided by OPP.

6 Restroom Receptacle - Plastic Waste receptacles in restrooms should be designated as compost using the sign below. Untouchable, as manufactured by Rubbermaid Commercial Products, is the university standard. Receptacles manufactured by others will be considered if size and capacity requirements are met. 9 Station Placement Guidelines Locate stations near stair/elevator where foot traffi c is greatest. Station locations from fl oor to fl oor should be the same if possible Distance between stations should be approximately 300 (150 from users) Station with Slim Jim receptacle 2nd Floor Stations using Slim Jim s require approximately 12 of continuous, free wall space Stations using cube require approximately 10 of continuous, free wall space Do not locate station in front of windows All restrooms should be equipped with compost receptacle (no lid required) Food preparation areas may have single trash and compost receptacles. Copier/printer stations may have single paper recycling receptacles. Station with Slim Jim receptacle Sample Station Layout Plan
