FIRE FIGHTER SURVIVAL : SURV 16 HOURS PREREQUISITE: ELIF Course # 1 Instructor: Nick Sohyda This is a comprehensive program dealing with the knowledge and skill needed to effect rescue as a member of a Rapid Intervention Team. The course also demonstrates last-ditch self-rescue techniques (some of which are not seen in the books). These emergency procedures though involving some risk themselves, are designed to be useable when the only other alternative is to die. Emphasis will be placed on search techniques, communications, accountability, and self-rescue procedures. This course is best suited to students who, in addition to the prerequisite training, have at least a ground-floor level of onthe-street practical firefighting experience. an 2.5 hours Con Ed Students will need: TOG; SCBA with spare cylinder; PASS device VEHICLE FIRES AND OTHER EMERGENCIES: VFOE 16 HOURS PREREQUISITE: ELIF Course # 2 Instructor: John Riggle This course will inform students of the hazards encountered at these common emergencies. Emphasis is placed on changes in vehicle design that have an effect on the way vehicle fires must be handled to insure safety of responders and the public. Proper strategy and tactics are covered, and hands-n experience allows application of these in a real life context. and 4 hours Con Ed Students will need: TOG; SCBS; Eye Protection FIRE DYNAMICS: STRATEGY AND TACTICS: FDST 3 HOURS PREREQUISITE: FDF Instructor: Tim Brown This course provides the firefighter the basic knowledge of strategy and tactics and how to apply the evidence based fire research conducted by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and other fire service organizations to fire ground operations. This course introduces new terminology related to fire dynamics, ventilation, flow paths, door control, transitional fire attack, basement fires, and new concepts for developing strategy and tactics. FIRE DYNAMICS: FUNDAMENTALS: FDF 3 HOURS PREREQUISITES: ELEF Instructor: Tim Brown The course provides the firefighter the basic knowledge to reinforce the evidence based research conducted by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and other fire service organizations. This course introduces new terminology related to fire dynamics, legacy verse modern fuel loads, new construction techniques, flow paths, door control, and ventilation that all impact fire ground operations. 4 17

4 Class Combo Class # C - 22 *Must take all four classes* EMERGENCY SERVICES: UTV/ATV 4 HOURS Instructor: Steve Rabine Utility Terrain vehicles (UTVs) and All-Terrain vehicles (ATVs ) continue to gain wider acceptance and use in the emergency service. They have given organizations a less physically demanding, more rapid and effective response to emergency incidents and special events. Adding UTVs and ATVs to the ESO s fleet provides a great benefit but also can present safety issues if those using the vehicle have not been properly trained in the operations and maintenance of these types of vehicles. BCCC Certificate and 3.5 hours Con Ed BUILDING CONSTRUCTION: WOOD AND ORDINARY (NFA) : BCP 16 HOURS PREREQUISITE: ELFS Course # 3 Instructor: Phil Macmillian This course provides the student with information on how the construction type, alterations, design and materials influence a buildings reaction to fire. The student will assess building stability and resistance to fire, locate hazards, and determine likely paths of fire extension. TRAFFIC INCIDENT MANAGEMENT: TIM 4 HOURS Instructor: Steve Rabine Emergency Service Organizations (ESO) respond to a wide variety of incidents involving operations on, or near a highway. These operations pose special risks to personnel performing fire, rescue and EMS functions. Every year a significant number of emergency service personnel are killed or injured while operating on our highways. There may be a wide variety of reasons for these losses, but the point still remains, there are ways to minimize the risks. This course will introduce ways to reduce the risk of emergency responder personnel injuries on highways. and 3.5 hours Con Ed EMERGENCY VEHICLE DRIVER TRAINING: EVDT 16 HOURS PREREQUISITES: IST OR ELIS Course # 4 Instructor: TBD A large proportion of emergency responder deaths and injuries occur as a result of motor vehicle accidents involving emergency response vehicles. This course is suitable for both novice and veteran emergency vehicle operators. This course consists of eight (8) hours of classroom and eight (8) hours of driving on a competency course. This course will teach, reinforce and review those issues and skills needed by anyone who operates a motor vehicle in responding to an emergency. and 16 hours Con Ed 16 5

BASIC VEHICLE RESCUE AWARENESS: BVRA 16 HOURS PREREQUSITE: NONE {Must be at least 16 yrs old} Course # 5 Instructor: Tom Scheffer This is the first of a three course series, jointly sponsored by the Academy and the Department of Health EMS Office. Successful completion of all three modules within eighteen months earn the student joint SFA/ DOH certification as a Vehicle Rescue Technician. The Pennsylvania Vehicle Rescue Curriculum places emphasis upon the development of knowledge and skills to be used by rescue personnel to achieve a sefe and efficient vehicle rescue operation. While not teaching patient care, i.e. medical treatment, this program will provide those rescue personnel with no formal medical training with a strong orientation to patient related rescue. Upon the completion of this course, the student will have an understanding of vehicle rescue operations, ICS phrases of vehicle course. The student will also have an understanding of vehicle technology and design. This course is intended for personnel who need to have an awareness of vehicle rescue operations. and 10 hours Con Ed Students will need: TOG; Eye Protection BASIC FIREMANSHIP: 16 HOURS PREREQUISITES: NONE Course # 19 Instructor: John Gardell The basic skills necessary to function as a member of a fire department are covered in this course. Topics include hose, ladders, and use of SCBA. Junior Fire fighters 14 and up may attend. BCCC Certificate Students will need: Full TOG/PPE, SCBA with spare cylinder. RESIDENTIAL RESCUE 16 HOURS PREREQUISITES: ELIF OR EBM Course # 20 Instructor: Jim Petruzzi 46% of all structure fires are residential in nature. This class will allow searches to be accomplished faster and safer. This class will cover: effects of fire flow on search, review of fire behavior, VES, basic search review, oriented search, split search, drag techniques, ladder rescue, and multiple scenarios under smoke condition. BCCC Certificate Students will need: Full TOG/PPE, SCBA with spare cylinder. FLAMMABLE LIQUID FIRE FIGHTING: FLBU 1 16 HOURS PREREQUISITES: ELIF and HAZ MAT OPS Course # 21 Instructor: TBD This course provides instruction to the students about fires involving various liquids with emphasis on hydrocarbon fuels. Methods to extinguish fires are discussed and then practiced during live fire exercises. Students will need: TOG, SCBA 6 15

RAPID INTERVENTION TEAMS: RICE 16 HOURS PREREQUISITE: ELIS Course # 17 Instructor: Jim Crawford This program will prepare fire department personnel for implementation of a stand-by rescue team at structure fires and certain other especially hazardous incidents. The course content relies heavily on the successful experiences of departments which have implemented and utilized the concept. BCCC Certificate Students will need: TOG, SCBA RURAL FIREGROUND WATER MOVEMENT: RFWM 16 HOURS PREREQUSITE: ELIS Course # 6 Instructor: Jeremy Simcheck This course will provide the student with instruction in the basic concepts of rural water movement in support of fire ground operations. Topics covered include: drafting, use of portable pumps, tanker fill operations, relay pumping and water flow calculation. Students will need: TOG STRUCTURAL COLLAPSE OPERATIONS LVL II: SCOF 16 HOURS PREREQUESITES: CSR or BCP or BCN; AND SCOA Course # 18 Instructor: Brian Kokkila This course gives rescue personnel the knowledge and skill to operate effectively at incidents involving the collapse of light frame and heavy wall structures. the course contains considerable hands-on instruction in situation assessment, emergency shoring and stabilization, breaching building materials and patient packaging and extrication. and 2.5 hours Con Ed Student will need: WC; head, hand, eye, ear, and foot protection AERIAL APPARATUS PRACTICES: AELA 16 HOURS PREREQUSITE: ELIS Course # 7 Instructor: TBD This course provides instruction in basic operating principles and procedures of aerial apparatus. The type of apparatus available, their advantages and disadvantages, and their operability will be discussed. Proper placement and safety issues will be stressed. Students need: TOG BUS RESCUE: BRES 16 HOURS PREREQUSITE: BVRT Course # 8 Instructor: Ron Shaffer This course provides instruction in handling accidents and/or fires involving various types of buses. Safe procedures for rescue of victims from bus vehicles are emphasized. and 11 hours Con Ed Students will need: TOG 14 7

LEGAL ASPECTS FOR THE FIRE SERVICE: LAFS 16 HOURS PREREQUSITE: NONE Course # 9 Instructor: Kim Houser This course makes the student aware of the various laws pertaining to the fire service in Pennsylvania and some consideration he/she should deal with. A simulated trial is conducted during the course. and 7 hours Con Ed STRUCTURAL BURN SESSION: SBS 16 HOURS PREREQUISITE: ELIF Course # 15 Instructor: Jim Thompson This course will provide the student with a review of the techniques used in safe fire fighting tactics in an actual structural fire environment. Emphasis is placed on safety for both interior and exterior operations. Students will need: TOG, SCBA LEADERSHIP 1: STRATEGIES FOR COMPANY SUCCESS (NFA): LSI 16 HOURS PREREQUSITE: ELIS Course # 10 Instructor: J.C. Tedorski Running an effective fire service organization, whether career, combination, or volunteer, requires leaders. Many line and administrative officers are very competent in technical areas, but need training and skill practice in key managerial strategies to reach their full potential in leading their organizations. This course is targeted at any line or administrative officer must make decisions, solve problems, or conduct meetings as part of his/her duties. INCIDENT SAFETY OFFICER (NFA): ISO 16 HOURS PREREQUSITE: NICS - FS or NICS - EMS or ICS and IAFF or HISTI or HMOR or HM Ops Cert Course # 16 Instructor: Dave Watkins This course focuses on the duties of the person who finds him/her self in the role of the responding safety officer at the scene of an incident. It is an incident - specific, scene - oriented course designed to teach what a safety officer on the scene needs to know and be able to do, using scenarios to convey instructional points. Students should be experienced company officers, familiar with safety issues, the ICS, Haz - mat management, and applicable NFPA standards and federal regulations. and 5.5 hours Con Ed PUMP OPERATIONS I: PUOP 16 HOURS PREREQUSITE: ELFG Course # 11 Instructor: Chuck Craig This course provides the fire fighter with an introduction to basic pump construction and theory, as well as operating techniques in this course. Emphasis is placed on getting water to the pump, getting water from the pump for hose streams, and prevention of common mistakes in pump operations. Students will need: TOG 8 13

BASIC RIGGING FOR ROPE RESCUE: ROBR 16 HOURS PREREQUSITE: ELIS or IST Course # 12 Instructor: Bob Barbarini This course is designed for personnel whose duties require training in basic rope rescue knowledge s and skills, but not in rappelling. Students are introduced to rope construction, rope characteristics, rope hardware and various knots and hitches. They will participate in patient packaging and stokes litter handling exercises, and will be trained in practical haul systems and their uses. and 2 hours Con Ed Students will need: Gloves, Helmet, Eye Protection HIGH - RISE FIRE FIGHTING: HIRI 16 HOURS PREREQUSITE: ELIF or EBM and ECOP and TRCO Course # 14 Instructor: Tom Cook This course, designed for experienced fire personnel, will provide instruction in fighting fires in high rise buildings. The special problems encountered by the fire fighter in this type of fire are also discussed.
