Normandy & Paris September 3-11, 2016 Additional dates may be available Explore the diverse architecture and cuisine of Paris and honor the fallen by visiting historic WWII sites. Day 1: fly to Europe Enjoy dinner and a movie aboard our overnight flight. Day 2: tour Paris Today we discover the enchanting sights of romantic Paris, the City of Light. Our English-speaking Parisian guide introduces us to the sights and sounds of the city including Notre Dame Cathedral, the celebrated Champs-Elysees Boulevard and the Arc de Triomphe. Enjoy an included NewsCenter Welcome Lunch hosted by our Tour Director. We continue our tour as we explore the Left Bank area of Paris. Later this afternoon we arrive at our modern, city center hotel. L Day 3: monet s garden & rouen Enjoy a full breakfast complete with fresh fruit before venturing out each morning. Our path takes us through the French countryside into Normandy and the charming village of Giverny, home to Impressionist painter Claude Monet. St. Mére Église Surrounded by nature s beauty, the serene atmosphere of his home, gardens and pond make us feel as if we ve stepped into one of his famous paintings. This afternoon we visit Rouen en route to our three-night stay in Normandy. Rouen is the historical capital city of Normandy and is famous for its cathedral. The cathedral s gothic façade was the subject of a series of paintings by Claude Monet. Inside the cathedral is the tomb of Richard the Lionheart. B Day 4: explore D-day sites We are joined by a special World War II guide to learn about famous battle events. We ll spend the morning at Omaha Beach where Americans took the German fortifications. We ll study the battlefield, cross the beach, analyze maps and pay tribute to the courage that guarded our freedom. Today, the American Cemetery stretches along the bluff. We ll pay our respects among the hundreds of crosses and Stars of David for the deceased. Our next visit is Arromanches, renowned site of Mulberry Harbor. The artificial port and dock handled thousands of Allied troops and cargo after they crossed the Channel during wartime. Portions of it remain today. B,D Day 5: Airborne museum Joined by our World War II guide, we ll visit the Point-du-Hoc Ranger Monument, located on a sheer cliff overlooking Omaha Beach and Utah Beach. Americans seized the German artillery pieces here, preventing fire on American troops landing on the beach. This afternoon we ll visit St. Mére Église, seized by American paratroopers on D-Day and visit the Paratrooper Museum. Next we visit Utah Beach which was the western most beach during the Allied landings. Later, we view the Bayeux Tapestry. The tapestry tells the tale of William the Conqueror s invasion of England. B,D Day 6: paris & seine river cruise Enjoy the scenic landscapes as we retrace our steps back to Paris. We start with a visit to the Musée d Orsay on the left bank of the Seine River in the heart of Paris. It is housed in the former Gare d Orsay, a Beaux-Arts railway station built between 1898 and 1900. Inside is the largest collection of impressionist and postimpressionist paintings in the world dating from 1848 to 1915. This evening we enjoy an included dinner followed by a spectacular Seine River cruise. This is a magical evening like no other, as we witness the glow of illuminated buildings, bridges and churches. B,D Day 7: louvre This morning we will visit the incredible Garnier Opera House, home to the famous Phantom of the Opera. Paris Pointe-du-Hoc Utah Beach Sainte Mére Église Omaha Beach 3 Normandy is a collection of unique neighborhoods; today we begin with a stroll through the Latin Quarter neighborhoods. These areas are lined with shops bakeries, cheese, butcher shops, fruits and vegetables, flowers and chocolates. We follow this with a visit to the Saint Germain Des Prés neighborhood, named after the oldest church in Paris. This afternoon is open for independent activities. If shopping is your desire, the famous department stores Galleries Lafayette and Printemps are nearby as well as many stores along Boulevard Haussmann. This evening is a special treat as we visit the Louvre when it isn t as crowded as during the day. We see famous works of art, most notably DaVinci s Mona Lisa and the ancient greek statues Venus de Milo and Winged Victory. B Day 8: dine in the eiffel TOWER Once a mecca of artists, the neighborhood of Montmartre is quintessential Paris. Small squares, winding streets, small terraces and one of the most spectacular views of the city make for a delightful visit.
