Setup & Configuration How do I pair the hearing aids to the Unite TV? Pairing is the process of setting up an exclusive communication between your hearing aids and your Unite TV. Your hearing care practitioner can set up pairing during the fitting of your hearing aids. Alternatively, you can follow the below steps to pair your hearing aids to Unite TV: 1. Make sure Unite TV is plugged in to a wall socket and that the green power light is ON. Your hearing aids must be off open the battery door. 2. Press the pairing button on Unite TV one time. This will activate the amber activity light indicating that pairing mode has been activated. Also, channel indicator light number 1 will be turned on when the pairing button has been pressed only once. Pairing mode will be activated for 20 seconds. 3. While pairing mode is activated, close the battery doors of both hearing aids and make sure they are ON. (If the amber activity light turns off before the hearing aids are turned on, pairing will not be completed.) A successful pairing will be indicated by an audible melody played in both hearing aids. You are now ready to use the Unite TV! Pairing to a 2nd or 3rd Unite TV unit It is possible to pair up to three Unite TV units with a one pair of hearing aids. To pair a second Unite TV, press the pairing button of the second unit twice, which will illuminate the 2nd channel indicator and then close the battery doors on the hearing aids. A third Unite TV unit can be paired by pressing the pairing button three times and completing the procedure as described above. What is the latency of the streamed signal? The latency is less than 20 ms. Latency above 30 ms can be perceived as echoes if direct sound is also audible to the user. Does the Unite TV use batteries? No, the Unite TV must always be connected to an AC external power source. Page2
How many Unite TV can I have in my house? Your wireless ReSound hearing aids can be paired to up to three Unite TVs at a time. Which devices can be connected to the Unite TV? Any device with audio output (headphone jack or RCA output ports) can be connected. For example, you can connect your TV-set, Stereo and Computer to the Unite TV. How many hearing aids can the Unite TV be paired with? The Unite TV can be paired with as many hearing aids as needed. How should I place the Unite TV? For best performance, the Unite TV should be placed with a clear line of sight to the hearing aid user. How do I connect the Unite TV to my TV, Stereo and Computer? 1) Connect the power supply to the wall socket and insert the cable to the Mini-USB socket on Unite TV. 2) Connect the red and white plug of the audio cord into the red and white plugs on your TV. 3) Plug the other end of the red and white audio cord in the 'AUDIO OUT' terminal on the TV. 4) The 'AUDIO OUT' is usually marked 'L R' for left and right, and 'AUDIO OUT' and can be found on the back of the TV. Alternatively you can plug this cable into your Stereo. Alternative audio cable installations: If connecting Unite TV to the AUDIO OUTPUT jack is not possible on your TV, there are alternative installation possibilities: Jack adapter, Scart adapter. If your TV only has a digital port, you will need a digital to analog audio converter and a coaxial or optical cable to connect Unite TV to your TV-set. Consult your TV technician for these 2 items. Jack adapter for TV and Computer: 1. Connect the power supply to the wall socket and insert the cable to the Mini-USB socket on Unite TV. 2. Connect the red and white plug of the audio cord into the red and white plugs on Unite TV. 3. Connect the Jack adapter on the other end of the audio cable. 4. Plug the Jack adapter into the TV s 'HEADPHONE' output terminal, or alternatively into your computers audio terminal. Scart adapter for TV: 1. Connect the power supply to the wall socket and insert the cable to the Mini-USB socket on Unite TV. 2. Connect the red and white plug of the audio cord into the red and white plugs on Unite TV. 3. Attach the Scart adapter to the other end of the audio cable. 4. Plug the Scart adapter into the TVs Scart terminal. How often does the Unite TV need to be charged? The Units TV does not need to be charged as it runs on mains (AC) power. Page4
Use & Operation How do I start streaming? Turn on the TV, Stereo, Computer or other audio device connected to Unite TV. Make sure your hearing aids are turned on as well. Streaming may be started in one of two ways. 1) Press and hold the push button on either hearing aid for about three seconds. This must be done separately on both hearing aids in order to hear streamed audio in both ears. Once Unite TV has been connected, an audible melody will play in your hearing aids and will be followed by the streamed sound. 2) If you have a ReSound Unite Remote Control (optional), simply press the Unite TV button. Doing so will briefly show a search icon in the Remote Control display. Once the hearing aids connect to Unite TV, a short melody will be played in both ears to confirm the presence of streamed audio and a streaming icon will appear in the display along with an indication of the Unite TV you are listening to: A, B, C. A, B, C being fully customizable names set through the fitting software used by your care professional. How do I stop streaming? 1) Press the program button on either hearing aid. This will cancel streaming on the side pressed. 2) With the ReSound Unite Remote Control (optional) you just have to press the 'P- button, located in the center of the keypad. This will return the hearing aids to the last program used. You may also press the Home button to return to your default program 1 settings. 3) If you are using the telephone with ReSound Unite Phone Clip+ or Phone-Now, streaming of Unite TV will be temporarily disrupted. When you have ended your phone call, streaming will resume. If the streamed signal disappears how do I reconnect? If the streamed signal disappears it can be due to: 1) The hearing aids are out of range of the Unite TV. Try shortening the distance between the hearing aids and the Unite TV. Page5
a. You can be up to 7 meter (20 feet) away from the Unite TV. If you get out of this range but return within range within five minutes the hearing aids will reconnect automatically. b. If you get out of range and don t return within five minutes you can reconnect on the hearing aids with a long press (3 seconds) on the pushbutton or by pressing the Unite TV button on the optional ReSound Unite Remote Control. 2) The cable connecting the Unite TV to the audio source is not inserted completely into the Unite TV. Ensure that all cables are plugged in and the plug is in the wall outlet. How do I adjust the volume? Adjusting the listening volume can be accomplished in a variety of ways. Keep in mind that volume adjustments apply to the streamed signal only, not the volume of normal environmental sounds. 1) Use the '+' and '-' keys on the Unite TV to adjust volume to a comfortable level. Make sure that your hearing aids are comfortably adjusted before you change the settings with the volume control. In most cases this adjustment should only be made once, as Unite TV is intended as a 'set and forget' type of device. 2) Use the ReSound Unite Remote Control (optional) to adjust volume. 3) The volume can in some cases be further adjusted at the signal source, for example by turning the TV itself down. In many cases this will adjust the volume of both streamed audio (transmitted wirelessly to your hearing aids) and non-streamed audio (sounds reaching the hearing aid microphones in the normal fashion). Of course, this will also affect listening volume for others in the room. How far from the Unite TV can I hear the sound? You should be able to hear the streamed signal clearly up to at least 7 meters (20 feet) from the Unite TV. If the sound does not come through clearly, you may have to move closer to the Unite TV. Does the volume on the sound source also affect the volume in my hearing aids? Normally not. To adjust the streamed sound from the TV, Stereo or Computer you can use volume +/- on the ReSound Unite Remote Control (optional). There is also a volume control on the top of the TV, with black buttons that have a '+' and '-' on them. Page6
If the Unite TV is connected to the headphone jack on the TV, Stereo or Computer, adjustments on e.g. the TV remote control may also adjust the volume in the hearing aids. Can I communicate on the telephone while watching TV? Phone Now When the phone rings while you are watching TV, you can pick up the phone and the hearing aids will automatically change to PhoneNow if you have the phone magnet attached to your phone. You will hear an indication in the hearing aids that you are in PhoneNow. You will still have streamed signal in the other ear. When you hang up the phone the hearing aids will automatically go back to streamed sound, and you will hear an indication in the hearing aids that you are in streaming mode. Unite Phone Clip+ When a call is received on your mobile phone, the Bluetooth indicator will flash and after a short delay you will hear the ringtone in your hearing aids. To accept the incoming call, briefly press the multifunctional button on your ReSound Unite Phone Clip+. If you are wearing two hearing aids, the caller s voice will be streamed to both of them. You can also accept calls by pressing the accept button on your mobile phone. Can I hear the phone call while watching TV? It is possible to hear the phone call while watching TV if the hearing aids are programmed with a streaming + microphone program. If the hearing aids are programmed with a streaming only program it is not possible to hear the phone calling while watching TV. If you have a ReSound Unite Phone Clip+ paired with your mobile it will automatically connect to the phone. Ask your Hearing Care Professional what program you have. How do I accept a phone call when I m watching TV? Phone Now: When the phone rings while you are watching TV, you can pick up the phone and the hearing aids will automatically change to PhoneNow if you have the phone magnet attached to your phone. You will hear an indication in the hearing aids that you are in PhoneNow. You will still have streamed signal in the other ear. Yes, it is possible to hear your mobile phone ringing if you have paired the phone to the Unite Phone Clip+. The phone signal will be received in both ears. Is the Unite TV waterproof? The Unite TV is not waterproof. Exposure to water or excessive moisture may damage the product. If the Unite TV accidently is exposed to water or moisture, then wipe it carefully with a soft cloth. Troubleshooting Why doesn t sound from the TV come through clearly? This could be because: 1) The hearing aids are out of range of the Unite TV. Try shortening the distance between the hearing aids and the Unite TV. 2) The cable connecting the Unite TV to the TV-set, Stereo, Computer or other audio sources is not inserted completely into the Unite TV. Ensure that all cables are plugged in and the power plug is plugged into the wall socket. 3) The Unite TV should be positioned vertically for optimal streaming. Check to make sure that the device is positioned in a vertical manner such as in its stand, and not lying flat. 4) The Unite TV may be too close to other electrical devices such as a DVD player or stereo receiver. Check to make sure that it is not sitting on top of an electrical device. Page8
