The Gaston County GIS website s new look The updated Gaston County GIS website optimizes the map area, has user friendly interactive tools, collapsible menus and movable windows. Banner The banner is located along the top of the map. It displays the website logo, the title, the basemap toggle button, as well as the three (3) main search tools. You can hide the banner using one of the tools from the main toolbar. Basemap A basemap is a map depicting background reference information such as landforms, roads, landmarks, and political boundaries, onto which other thematic information can be placed. There are two (2) basemaps to choose from. A simple parcel and roads grayscale map (Basic) and a more complex map based off of esri s World Topographic Map Template & Local Government General Purpose Basemap (Full). Map layers in the basemap cannot be turned on/off. To change the basemap, click the icon and select Full or Basic from the list. Search Tools The search tools allow for a complete or partial entry. If a single match is found the map will zoom directly to the location; for multiple results a drop down list will be created. To zoom to one of the results on the map, click an item in the list. The list will remain visible until you clear, close or perform another search. You may return to the list and select another result. Only one result may be selected at a time. The active tool is outlined in white. Parcel Number Search Search by the six (6) digit Gaston County Parcel ID (PID) (Example: 212716) Owner Name Search Search by the Current Owners Name Gaston County stores owner s names in the following format: Last Name First Name Middle Initial/Name or Company Name. (Example: Gaston County or Smith John) Address Search Search by http://gis.gastongov.com/gastongis/ Parcel Address This input searches the single physical address listed with the tax record. (Example: 128 W Main Ave) Search by Street Name or Intersection This input searches street centerlines, an intersection can be queried by using at, and, or. (Example: Hudson and Union) Page 4
Search Tools Address Search The typical format for an address is house number, street name and street type. It may also include a directional such as north, south, east or west. Directionals and types are represented by with an abbreviation. Please do not use punctuation such a period or city, state and zip code when searching by an address. Tools The active tool is outlined in white. Banner Hide/Unhide Toggle button to show and hide the banner. The banner must be visible to be able to use the three (3) main search tools and switch basemaps. Layers This opens the window that displays the additional map layers that can be viewed. The layers are sorted into groups. To view the layer: expand the list, click in the checkbox next to the layer and click the Refresh Selected Layers button at the bottom of the list. Imagery Overlay This group of map layers is designed to display with any of the Imagery layers. Click the checkbox to the right of the name to add all the layers in this group or expand the list and select the individual layers. Expand/Collapse a list of layers Not Selected / Selected Click the checkbox besides the layer you would like to view. Cannot view this layer at the current scale A layer s visibility may be scale dependent; if you see this icon next to the layer you will need to zoom in/out to see that layer. Set Transparency for a layer This icon allows you to adjust the transparency for this layer using a sliding bar. 0% is no visibility (transparent) and 100% is completely opaque (solid). The transparency adjustments will not show up on a print page. Page 6

Advanced Tools The advanced tools buttons can be used to turn a tool on/off. Buffer Click to show/hide the Buffer Tools window. The buffer tool will create a buffer polygon around a parcel to a specified distance. Buffer Distance An input box for the user to specify a numeric distance. Buffer Unit A dropdown menu for Buffer Distance measurement type. Miles Feet Kilometers Meters Buffer Color Click in the color area to expand the color palette. Click anywhere on the palette to select a color. Fill Opacity A slider tool to set transparency to the buffer color. Select Surrounding Parcels? Select Yes/No if you want to select the surrounding parcels. By selecting yes the surrounding parcels will be highlighted and a list will be generated of the Adjoining Owners. Adjoining Owners window A results list of Parcel Numbers, Current Owners, Mailing Addresses, Deed Book, Deed Page, Plat Book, Plat Page and Acreage. This window can be resized and moved anywhere on the map. You have the option to export this list to a CSV file or to print the list. Please set your printer settings accordingly. Page 8
Advanced Tools Directions Click to show/hide the Direction Tools window. This is a Google Maps tool. Enter the addresses and you will get a map and direction results from Google Maps. Drawing and Text Click to show/hide the Drawing and Text Tools window. This is an interactive tool that allows the one to use a mouse to place graphics on the map. These graphics will not be saved. Point (Includes Long/Lat) Multi Point Line Arrow Ellipse Rectangle Text Layer Swipe Click to show/hide the Layer Swipe window. The layer swipe is an interactive tool that reveals layers beneath the layer being swiped. You must have one additional layer turned on for this tool to work. Swipe Type Vertical Swipe A vertical swipe bar will appear that can be moved right and left. Horizontal Swipe A horizontal swipe bar will appear that can be moved up and down. Scope Swipe A circular view window will appear that can freely move anywhere on the map. The chosen layer will appear inside the circular view. Page 9
Advanced Tools Map Legend Click to show/hide the map legend window. A legend tells a map reader the meaning of the symbols used to represent features on the map. Measure Click to show/hide the measuring tools window. Area Measure the size of the polygon drawn with single mouse clicks and completed with a double mouse click in Acres, Square Miles, Square Kilometers, Hectares, Square Yards, Square Feet, or Square Meters. Distance Measure the total length between 2 points or several points in Miles, Kilometers, Feet, Meters or Yards. Location Measure Longitude and Latitude for a single point in Decimal Degrees or Degrees Minutes Seconds. Navigation Click to show/hide the navigation toolbar displayed on the left side of the map. Overview Map Click to show/hide the overview map window displayed in the bottom right corner. It shows a perspective of the parcel location in relationship to major roads and townships. You can pan the map by dragging the location of the shaded box inside the overview map. When the overview map is active, you can minimize/maximize it by clicking the white arrow in the bottom right corner. Page 10
Print Map This opens the Print Map window. Document Name (optional) Type a name for your print document/map. There is a 50 character maximum. Additional Comments (optional) Type additional information for your print document/map. There is a 50 character maximum Export Type Select from the dropdown menu the type of file you would like your map to be, PDF (Document)* HTML (Webpage) *The document name and additional comments will not show on the PDF. Page Orientation Select the page orientation by clicking next to the radio button. Remember to adjust your printer settings accordingly. Portrait Landscape Print Area The area of the map that will be printed is shown with a red dashed outline. You can adjust the map area to be printed by zooming in/out or panning the map. Select the Print or Confirm Print button to print the page. Navigation toolbar The navigation toolbar may be displayed/hidden using the navigation button from the advanced tools list. The active tool is outlined in white. Pan Shift the map image without changing the view scale. Click the Pan tool, then click and hold the left mouse button, while dragging mouse in the desired direction. Zoom to Full Extent Returns the map to the original county boundary extent. Clear Map Clear the map of graphics and selections. Zoom In Create a closer view scale on the map by drawing a box with the mouse. Zoom Out Create a further away view scale on the map by drawing a box with the mouse. Next Extent Allows you to toggle back and forth between viewed locations on the map. Previous Extent Returns to the previous location on the map. Page 13
Navigation Gaston County GIS Website Identify a Parcel Display parcel information in one of two ways. Hover Positioning the mouse over a parcel and not clicking will show mini parcel information window containing house picture, parcel number, current owners name and the physical address. Select Positioning the mouse over a parcel and clicking once will display the Parcel Information window. This table contains all the tax information that was available on the original Gaston County GIS website, plus some new additions. You can resize and move this window. Deselect the Current Tool Turns off the active navigation tool, this will allow you to better work with some of the advanced tools without having information pop ups. Page 14
Scale Bar & Compass Rose Zoom In/Out A preset incremental change of view scale; the button will change color when you have reached minimum/maximum view extents. A new feature is being able to zoom in/out using your mouse wheel. Scale Bar The linear scale displays the current map scale in both metric and US measurements. North Arrow The Compass Rose or North Arrow displays the maps orientation or the cardinal direction north. This may be repositioned on the map by click (hold) and drag with the mouse. Page 15
Parcel Selection When a parcel is selected it will be highlighted with a teal border. You can select a parcel by using one of the three (3) search tools and it returns a single result; by clicking on an item in a list created for multiple results or by using the Identify tool and clicking on a parcel. Parcel Selection shown with Full Basemap, Basic Basemap, & 2014 Imagery Property Record Card The link to the Property Record Card is at the top of the Parcel Information window. Parcel Information window Print Map and Report A printable view of the current map with the selected parcel s tax appraisal information. Parcel Building Summary A printable view of the Structure Type, Year Built, Square Feet, Number of Bedrooms, Number of Baths, Assessed Value and Percent Complete of all the structures on the selected parcel. Parcel Deed History A printable view of the sales history for the selected parcel: Parcel Number, Date Recorded, Deed Name, Deed Book, Deed Page, Qualify Code, Instrument Type, and Indicated Sales Amount. Create a Link to this Parcel Generates a link that will open the GIS website and zoom to the parcel; to use this link highlight, copy/paste to share. Page 16
