How to use PGS: Basic Services Provision Map App The PGS: Basic Services Provision Map App The main features of the PGP Basic Services web application includes: Navigation Tools Map Tools Main Map Links Allows users to change map display. Tools include Zoom in & Zoom Out, Extent, Find Location, and My Location. Provides access to different tools that open in Panels to interact with the Web Application. The function of each tool shall be discussed in the succeeding sections. Displays the available spatial data. Allows access between the Homepage and Map. 1. Navigating the Map One common task that will be done within the PGP Basic Services web application is map navigation. This involves viewing the map from one area of interest to another by zooming in, zooming out, and panning around the map. When the application is launched, the Homepage is displayed by default. To access the Map viewer, the user must click the Map link on the upper right corner of the homepage. The display is centred by default to the whole of the Philippines. 2 1.1. Zoom In/Zoom Out One way of navigating through the map is by using the Zoom In and Zoom Out tools found on the Navigation toolbar at the upper left area of the map display. To zoom in/out to/from a specified area using the Zoom In (Out) tool; 1. Click the Navigation toolbar icon found on the upper left area of the map display to access the toolbar. 2. Click the Zoom In (Out) tool (labelled A on the graphic above) to activate it. 3. With the Zoom In (Out) tool activated, click-and-drag the mouse to draw a rectangle over an area on the map. Once the mouse click is released, the map display automatically updates to reflect the area to/from where the user zoomed in/out. While the application is still loading the specified map extent, a note saying, Please wait while map is loading... will appear on the lower-left corner of the map display Pan Aside from zooming in and out, users may also want to navigate from one area to another without changing the map s extent. This is done by panning around the map using the Pan Map tool (labelled B on the graphic above), which is also found on the same toolbar as the Zoom In and Zoom Out tools. To pan around the map; 1. Click the Navigation toolbar icon found on the upper left area of the map display to access the toolbar. 2. Click the Pan Map tool to activate it. How to use PGS: Basic Services Provision Map App 2
3. With the Pan Map activated, click-and-drag the mouse to the area on the map where to pan to. The map dynamically updates as it is panned. While the application is still loading the specified map extent, a note saying, Please wait while map is loading... will appear on the lower-left corner of the map display Previous Extent/Next Extent Previous map extents that have been navigated to within the same session can also be revisited using the Previous/Next Extent buttons on the same toolbar. To go the previous/next map extents that were navigated within the session; 1. Click the Navigation toolbar icon found on the upper left area of the map display to access the toolbar. 2. Click the Previous/Next Extent button (labelled C on the graphic above). The map automatically updates to reflect the map extent that was previously visited. While the application is still loading the specified map extent, a note saying, Please wait while map is loading... will appear on the lower-left corner of the map display Zoom to Full Extent The Zoom to Full Extent button (labelled D on the graphic above) is also made available to users in the same toolbar in order to conveniently view the entire map extent covered by the Philippines Find Address Users can also use the Find Address tool (labelled E on the graphic above) which allows them to type an address or place on the search box, and the application will automatically zoom and pan to the location indicated. How to use PGS: Basic Services Provision Map App 3
1.6. My Address The My Address on the other hand, which is represented by the icon (labelled F on the graphic above) beside the Find Address, allows users to zoom to their current location on the map when GPS is active (for mobile devices). 2. Changing the Map Background The map background (also known as the basemap) sets the preferred mood and feel of the PGP Basic Services web application's map display. Users may prefer to change the application's default map background (which is the OpenStreetMap) in their current session, into any of the other basemaps made available in the application. To change the application s basemap; 1. Click the Basemap and Bookmarks icon found on the upper left area of the map display. A link for Background Maps and Bookmarks is exposed below the icon. 2. Click the link for Background Maps to expose the list of thumbnails of all the available basemaps. 3. Scroll down the list and click a basemap that you prefer.! Some basemaps cannot be displayed at all map scales (i.e. some basemaps may not show up when zoomed in too close to the map). The map display shows Map data not available when this limitation is in effect. Simply zoom out the map to expose the chosen basemap on a larger extent. 3. Accessing spatial Bookmarks Aside from changing the map background, users can also access different pre-defined spatial bookmarks which show a specific area of interest. A spatial bookmark identifies a particular geographic location that you want to save and reference later. To access pre-defined spatial bookmarks; 1. Click the Basemap and Bookmarks icon found on the upper left area of the map display. A link for Background Maps and Bookmarks will be exposed below the icon. 2. Click the link for Bookmarks to expose the list of available pre-defined spatial bookmarks. 3. Click a spatial bookmark that you prefer. The main map display automatically pans and zooms in to the selected bookmark. How to use PGS: Basic Services Provision Map App 4
Since the available pre-defined bookmark is limited (Philippines and NCR), users may opt to create their own user-defined spatial bookmarks which shows their specific area of interest. To create user-defined spatial bookmarks; 1. Zoom in/out or pan to the desired map area and extent. 2. Click the Basemap and Bookmarks icon found on the upper left area of the map display. A link for Background Maps and Bookmarks will be exposed below the icon. 3. Click the link for Bookmarks to expose the list of available pre-defined spatial bookmarks. 4. On the bottom of the window showing the list of pre-defined bookmarks, click Add Bookmark. A textbox will appear wherein the user will input the name of the bookmark 5. Type in the name for the newly-created spatial bookmark. 6. Press Enter on the keyboard. The newly-created spatial bookmark will now be added on the list of available bookmarks. 4. Map Tools The PGP Basic Services web application includes a set of different map tools which the users can utilize when making their own thematic map Displaying Map layers The Layers and Legend panel contains the Table of Contents where the Operational Layers are listed with their corresponding symbologies. This allows the users to display layers which can be superimposed over the basemap. These operational layers are organized in the application in to 3 groups: Agency Locations, Facilities and Thematic Maps. The Agency Locations layer contains all the points plotted on the map which corresponds to the location of each of the government agencies. Aside from the location of the different agencies, the Layers and Legends panel also contains a set of layers, through the Facilities layer, which shows the location of different Basic Services Facilities in the whole of the Philippines. These are: How to use PGS: Basic Services Provision Map App 5
Day Care Facilities Hospital and health center Public school Fire Station Police precinct/station Unlike the Facilities layer, the Thematic Maps layer displays the location of the different Basic Services Facilities per Barangay, Municipality, Provincial, and Regional level. By default, the map layers from both groups are all turned off, i.e. they are not visible on the map. To display (turn-on) a map layer; 1. Click the Layers and Legend bar from the Map tools located on the upper right area of the map display. Each map layer in the list has a checkbox which can be ticked to make the map visible on the map display. 2. Choose a map layer from the list and tick its check box to turn it on. When a map layer is from the Thematic Maps is turned on, it also exposes a list of sublayers (labelled G on graphic above) which can also be turned on one by one. Use the scrollbar (labelled H on the graphic above) to see the other items in the list. 3. Tick the checkbox of the other sublayers that needs to be displayed. To turn off a layer, uncheck the box of a turned-on layer. How to use PGS: Basic Services Provision Map App 6
4.2. Setting a map layer s transparency Aside from turning layers on and off, map layers may also be set to be partially visible by applying a certain amount of transparency to it. This is most helpful in cases when there are multiple layers that need to be displayed together. To set the transparency of map layers; 1. Turn on a layer and any (or all) of its corresponding sub layers. Layer transparency is applied using a horizontal scrollbar that is found just below the layer's name (labelled I in the graphic above). Scrolling it all the way to the right makes the layer completely opaque (i.e. no transparency is applied); while scrolling it all the way to the left makes it totally invisible on the map display. 2. Click-and-drag the horizontal scrollbar until the layer displays according to desired level of transparency Enabling and displaying pop-ups on layers. The application can also be enabled to display pop-ups when a particular feature in a group layer is clicked on the map. The pop-ups expose textual information that describes the feature being clicked. To enable and display pop-ups on the map layers; 1. Click the Layers and Legend bar from the Map tools located on the upper right area of the map display to expand its list of layers. 2. Tick the Enable Pop-up one layer at a time checkbox (labelled J on the graphic below). 3. If necessary, turn on Facilities or Thematic maps layers and its corresponding sub layers. 4. Click a Facility or feature on the map. How to use PGS: Basic Services Provision Map App 7
The map might need to be panned in order to clearly see the pop-ups properly. When a feature is clicked, it gets highlighted (labelled k on the graphic below) and the pop-ups showing its information automatically appears. To close the pop-up window, click the Close button at the upper right corner of the pop-up window (labelled L on the graphic above) Draw, Annotate and Measure features Creating additional graphics and text on the Main Map display is also possible through the Draw, Annotate and Measure from the Map tools.
