PART 0 DESIGN STANDARDS 0.01 GENERAL DESIGN GUIDELINES A. Minimum insulation thicknesses shall comply with ASHRAE Standard 90A. B. Provide saddles and shields under pipe hangers. C. If more than one type of insulation material is available for satisfying technical requirements, then price-performance should be evaluated and maximized in material selection. D. Weigh need to insulate unions, flanges, valves, control devices and similar items where maintenance access is needed. Give consideration to: 1. Energy conservation 2. Where heat gain to space or ductwork is objectionable 3. Where condensation must be prevented E. Steam condensate and boiler feed water (Exception: When good engineering practice precludes insulation where cooling of condensate is desirable to avoid cavitation of condensate return pumps. See "Design Requirements" in Section 15540-HVAC Pumps.) F. Specify adjustment, lock nuts, and tolerances for hangers. G. Specify that the contractor shall reinstall cal-seals at time of pipe installation. H. Specify removable insulation for chilled water pumps, flexible connectors, unions, etc. I. Duct insulation 1. All supply ductwork shall have external insulation. 2. Internal insulation (duct liner) may be used only on short, open-ended transfer ductwork such as ducts connecting isolated plenums, etc. J. Detail on the drawings removable insulation covers for equipment. For example, enclose chilled water pump bodies in insulated sheet metal split case housings to provide easy maintenance of pumps without damage to insulation. PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 QUALITY ASSURANCE A.
