1 SECTION HVAC INSULATION PART ONE - GENERAL PART 1 - GENERAL 1.01 DESCRIPTION A. All work specified in this Section is subject to the provisions of Section B. All insulation products shall meet ASTM E 84 requirements for flame spread rating of 25 or less and smoke developed rating of 50 or less. All accessories such as adhesives, mastics, cements, tapes, and cloth shall have individual component and installed composite assembly flame spread and smoke developed ratings not exceeding those stated above. Treatment of jackets or facings required to provide minimum ratings shall be permanent. The use of water soluble treatment is prohibited. All products or their shipping containers shall bear a label indicating that flame and smoke ratings do not exceed above requirements. C. Staples alone shall not be used for securing insulation. All insulation shall be installed in accordance with the insulation manufacturer's recommendations and the NIA/MICA manual. Insulation shall be continuous through wall, ceiling, floor and roof openings and sleeves, except at fire/smoke dampers. All manufacturers recommendations for securing insulation, including maximum spacing of fasteners, shall be strictly adhered to. D. Supports for insulated piping shall be outside the insulation. E. Minimum duct and piping insulation thermal characteristics shall comply with the 2000 International Energy Conservation Code with Georgia State Supplements and Amendments ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS A. Insulation trade names referred to hereinafter are intended to set minimum requirements for insulation including type, density, "K" factor, thickness and finish. Approved manufacturers are: 1. Where the product of one manufacturer is specified by name, the equivalent products of the other manufacturers listed above will be acceptable SUBMITTALS A. Prior to ordering any products, the contractor shall submit the following minimum information about the items intended to be used for the project: 1. Intended Service (duct liner, refrigerant piping, hot water piping, etc.) 2. Brand of products 3. Thickness and density of insulation 4. External and/or internal facing composition 5. Maximum and minimum temperature ratings 6. Flame spread and smoke developed ratings 7. Thermal Conductivity 8. Facing type and permeability rating 9. Microbial growth resistance capabilities of insulation exposed to airstreams 10. Duct liner adhesive 11. Pipe insulation jacketing and fitting covers 12. Description of adhesives, cements, and tapes 13. Description of mechanical fastening systems 14. Description of finishing and flashing materials and methods 15. Installation instructions B. Information shall be submitted in the form of published data from the manufacturer of each product. A narrative detailing accessories to be used (adhesives, jacketing, etc.) shall be submitted by the contractor in type-written form on the contractor s letterhead. Submittal of the above items of information does not exempt the contractor from supplying additional information to the engineer as required to clearly convey the intended usage and application of products to the project. The burden of proving acceptability of a proposed product rests on the party submitting the request for approval. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 DUCT INTERNAL LINING Southern Crescent Technical College

3 A. All supply & return ductwork a min. of 10 feet from unit or greater as indicated on floor plans shall be insulated internally with 1" thick, 3.0 lb. / cu. ft. density acoustical duct liner with an acrylic coating on the air stream side that will not support or promote fungal or bacterial growth as rated in accordance with ASTM C 1071, G21 & G22. Acrylic coating shall be treated with an EPA registered anti-microbial agent. Insulation conductivity, or K value, shall not exceed 0.25 BTU/In. sq. ft. per degree F per hour at 75 degrees F per ASTM C 158. The lining noise reduction coefficient shall be a min. of 0.70 based on Type A mounting as tested in accordance with ASTM C 423. Insulation shall be rated for a minimum velocity to prevent surface fiber erosion of 4,000 FPM. All supply and return ductwork shall be lined with 2-1/2" insulation liner, which shall have a minimum R value of 6. B. All exterior supply and return ductwork shall be lined with 2-1/2" insulation liner, which shall have a minimum R value of DUCT BLANKET INSULATION (EXTERNAL WRAP) A. All ducts not internally lined, serving exhaust systems, nor noted on plans as uninsulated shall be insulated on the outside with 2" thick, 0.75 lb. / cu. ft. density fiber glass duct wrap insulation. All duct associated with energy recovery units shall be insulated. Insulation shall have a factory applied vapor barrier facing, F.S.K., consisting of aluminum foil reinforced with fiberglass yarn and laminated to fireresistant kraft. The insulation shall have an installed thermal conductivity not to exceed.26 BTU/In. sq. ft. per degree F per hour at a mean temperature of 75 degrees F per ASTM C 553, Type III. Insulation shall be rated for minimum service temperature of 250 degrees F. B. All outdoor air ductwork, supply air ductwork, and return air ductwork shall be insulated FIBERGLASS PIPE INSULATION A. Insulate all hot water pipe and all condensate pipe inside the building with fiberglass preformed pipe insulation with all service jacket. Insulation shall have a maximum K of 0.23 BTU/Hr., per degree F., per inch per sq. ft., at a mean temperature of 70 degrees F per ASTM C 547, Class 2. Minimum service temperature shall be 600 degrees F. Insulation thicknesses shall be as follows: Hot Water Pipe: ½" to 3" pipe size 1" thick 4" and larger 1-1/2" thick B. Insulation shall be dual-purpose glass fiber type, pre-molded into hollow cylinders having inside diameters which provide close fit over standard pipe and tubing sizes. Standard lengths shall be 3 to 4 feet. C. The factory applied standard jacket shall be all service jacket (ASJ), with a vapor barrier with maximum 0.02 permeability rating, and supplied with self-sealing longitudinal and butt lap (protected with removable paper strip) CELLULAR GLASS PIPE INSULATION A. Cooling tower exterior water piping shall be insulated with 1-1/2" thick cellular glass pipe insulation certified to conform to the requirements of ASTM C 552. Insulation shall be constructed of cellular glass with a minimum density of 8.0 pounds per cubic foot, permeability of 0.00, and with a thermal conductivity factor (K) of 0.33 at 75 degrees F in accordance with ASTM C 177 and C 518. Average compressive strength at breaking point, per ASTM C165, C240, and C552 is 100 psig. Insulation shall be completely non-combustible per ASTM E136. Maximum linear coefficient of thermal expansion per ASTM E228 shall be / degree F. Insulation shall be composed of closed cell glass. Material shall not be constructed with a binding agent. 4 B. Insulation vapor barrier treatment shall include white mastic with fabric reinforcement. Mastic and fabric reinforcement material shall be produced and provided by the cellular glass manufacturer. Piping insulation assembly shall be protected with a minimum 0.016" aluminum jacket CLOSED-CELL FOAM OR POLYOLEFIN PIPE INSULATION A. Refrigerant suction piping between evaporator coils and condensing units of split direct-expansion systems shall be insulated with preformed closed-cell elastomeric, engineered polymer foam or polyolefin insulation. Each refrigerant line in systems containing the expansion valve in the outdoor unit shall be insulated. Insulation shall be 1" thick with a minimum density of 1.5 pounds per cubic foot, maximum permeability of 0.10 per ASTM E 96, and with a thermal conductivity factor (K) of 0.29 at 75 degrees F in accordance with ASTM C 177 and C518. Insulation minimum service temperature range shall be between -40 degrees F to 180 degrees F. Longitudinal seams shall be pre-cut with adhesive coatings on each mating surface. Adhesive coatings shall be protected with plastic liner prior to application. Condensate Pipe: All pipe sizes 1" thick PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 EXAMINATION AND PREPARATION A. Ductwork and piping shall be tested for leakage prior to applying insulation materials. Duct leakage shall be measured at less than 5% prior to installation of external insulation INSTALLATION A. Insulation shall be installed in complete conformance with the manufacturer's recommendations and the Contract Documents. B. Duct Internal Lining 1. Insulation shall be adhered to the duct with a coverage of fire retardant adhesive tested in accordance with ASTM C-916 with all edges sealed. Edges of duct exposed to the air stream, such as at fan connections, shall be protected by sheet metal nosing. Installation shall be as recommended in SMACNA Duct Construction Standards - Metal and Flexible. Duct sizes shown on plans are clear inside dimensions. Increase actual duct size as required to allow for internal lining thickness. 2. Internal insulation shall be further fastened with Graham welded pins, Tuff Weld nylon hangers or Sticclips on maximum 16" centers on top section where width exceeds 24" and on side section where height exceeds 24". Before installing the insulation, caulk the edges that will butt with a heavy coat of mastic. All surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned prior to applying adhesive. Insulation applied to top surface of horizontal duct shall overlap the side pieces to provide maximum support. 3. Any abrasions or tears in the acrylic coating shall be repaired per manufacturer s recommendation. Patching adhesive shall meet ASTM C916. No voids on insulation interior sections will be permitted. Insulation shall be true at ends and shall extend 1/8" past return bend of drive side. Insulation on slip side shall be even with drive. No humps will be permitted where sections join. C. 5 1. Insulation shall be held in place with staples and U.L. listed pressure sensitive tape. Additional #18 gauge stainless steel wire on 4 foot centers, shall be installed for all ductwork with dimnesions greater than 12" to prevent sagging. All punctures in vapor barrier shall be sealed. All joints shall be lapped and wired. Staples and tape alone for ductwork with dimensions greater than 12" will not be acceptable. Where service access is required, bevel and seal ends of insulation. For insulated ductwork exposed in mechanical rooms and located less than 8'-0" above finished floor, cover with 24 Ga. aluminum jacket. 2. All punctures in vapor barrier facing shall be sealed with SMACNA tape meeting ASTM Standard C-1136, and shall be UL classified FSK tape, minimum 2 mil thickness aluminum. Manufacturers: Shur-Tape, McGill, or Certainteed. 3. All flexible connectors between water source heat pumps and internally insulated ductwork shall be insulated with duct blanket insulation. The external wrap shall extend a minimum 6" passed the flexible connector on both sides. D. Fiberglass Pipe Insulation 1. Locate insulation and cover seams at locations least visible from finished floor. 2. Neatly finish and seal insulation at all supports, protrusions, and interruptions. 3. Secure insulation seams and protective covers with self-sealing laps. Bevel and seal ends of insulation at equipment, flanges, and unions. 4. Provide same thickness wood block and/or cellular glass inserts between metal support shield and piping on piping 1-1/2" in diameter and larger. Inserts shall not be less than the following lengths: 1-1/2" to 2-1/2" pipe size 10" long 3" to 6" pipe size 12" long 8" to 10" pipe size 16" long 5. Pipe exposed in finished spaces, shall be covered with PVC or aluminum jacket. E. Cellular Glass Pipe Insulation 1. The insulation sections shall be bonded together with black asphalt mastic or adhesive manufactured and provided by the insulation manufacturer. 2. Over the insulation, apply a min. 1/16" thick coating of waterproof white mastic, a coating of open mesh synthetic reinforcing fabric, then a second 1/16" coating of waterproof white mastic, applied in such a manner as to insure complete coverage. 3. All insulation located on the exterior of a building shall be protected with a minimum 0.016" aluminum jacket. Jacketing shall be installed so that longitudinal seams are located on bottom side of horizontal piping runs. Jacketing shall be permanently fastened with aluminum bands provided by the jacketing manufacturer at 2'-0" o.c. F. Closed-cell Foam or Polyolefin Pipe Insulation 1. The insulation longitudinal seams shall be bonded together with factory applied adhesive on each mating surface. Butt joints shall be adhered using the insulation manufacturer s recommended bonding adhesive. Insulation shall not be applied in a compressed or stretched condition. Insulation shall not be installed at ambient temperatures below 40 degrees F. 2. Insulation located on the exterior of the building shall be coated with a minimum of two layers of water-proof mastic or other water repelling coating as manufactured or recommended by the insulation manufacturer.
