E-Learning Platform Employee Case Study Active IQ Academy Active IQ Academy provides e-learning and hardcopy resources for training providers to use in the delivery of active leisure courses. Ideal for training providers seeking flexible, cost effective training delivery methods, Active IQ Academy s e-learning library is a comprehensive learning management system for tracking learner activity. sector qualification offering, prides itself on providing best-in-class learning materials. With hardcopy manuals, lecture packs and electronic resources to support active leisure, business and administration, customer service and functional skills learning, the Academy s resources are mapped to nationally accredited qualifications and written by leading industry experts. Gary Rooney s original career choice was to go into physiotherapy. I studied chemistry, biology and PE to A Level, but when it got to the time to make a serious commitment to my future career I discovered that physiotherapy was a rather different business to that I had imagined. My second choice was to go into the fire service. I know it seems a stark contrast but it had a lot of the things I was looking for challenge and the chance to progress. The Academy, which provides Babcock International Group with a complete vocational learning resources package for its active leisure Meanwhile, I was already working at Beverley Holidays in Paignton as a Saturday job. Beverley Holidays is a family run holiday park with a range of accommodation and lots of activities including a gym. While I was still considering my next steps, my manager there offered me a full-time role and it was then that I began to think more seriously about the Active Leisure business. I d always been interested in physical education and sport so it began to make sense. What really turned my job into a career though, was when someone from training provider, Babcock International Group, visited Beverley Holidays and the Apprenticeship programme began. I signed up straight away. The learning programme and NVQ qualifications highlighted all kinds of career opportunities that are available in the sector and I realised that by turning my interests into a career I would have the challenges and opportunities to progress that I was looking for. People often think of jobs in the Active Leisure sector being stop-gap options for students and so on, but the expertise and experience of Kat, my Vocational Learning Adviser (VLA) from Babcock, opened my eyes to much more. As soon as I started on my first qualification an NVQ at Level 2 in Gym Instructing I discovered that workbased learning is a great system. The learning was a perfect fit around my job and I had a lot of support from my managers at Beverley Holidays, all of whom are keen on self-development. Babcock s system is very flexible, and designed to meet the needs of people at work and their employers. Kat, my VLA, would visit me for assessment and support visits at any time of day to suit me, so that my learning programme didn t interfere with the demands of my job. Additional work was all manageable in my own time. Learning while at work enabled me to put my knowledge into practice straight away and I could often find answers to course work questions in a practical way, rather than referring to a book. For instance, I could find the answer to a physiology question through trying a particular movement in the gym and observing the physical effect. You do need to be a self-motivated person to work in this way, though there s no teacher that you see every day to chide you. Having said that, Kat paid regular visits and was always available by phone or email to assist and guide me. Qualifications are very important if you want to move forward. They give you the knowledge and expertise that employers are looking for and show you different paths down which you can progress. 19 10 1
