Info & advice Current transformers (CT) & shunts KEEPING UP WITH CURR TRANSFORMERS Current transformers supply low voltage measuring instruments and isolate them from the network. They supply a standard current to the secondary that is proportional to the primary current. SELECTING A TRANSFORMER MOUNTING TYPE AND PRIMARY NOMINAL CURRENT The choice depends on the types of bars or cables and the nominal current on your installation. WOUND PRIMARY for currents less than A ACCURACY CLASS The accuracy class is defined according to the errors generated by on each element of the measurement line. The accuracy class of the CT should be less than or equal to that of the measuring instrument it supplies, especially where energy metering is concerned, where the accuracy impacts directly on the billing. PERMITTED POWER CALE PRIMARY for currents between 0 and 0 A USAR PRIMARY for currents between to 00 A This is the apparent power (in VA) that the CT must supply to the secondary in order to maintain its accuracy class. It is necessary to add the power absorbed by the measuring instruments ay be quite important. It is necessary to choose a CT whose power is slightly greater than the result of this calculation while avoiding too great a safety margin. This power, even though it may seem comparatively low, has a direct impact on the specifications of the CT. Moreover, the accuracy class is only guaranted for a real load between % and 00 % of the nominal power (between % and 00 % for class ). A CT oversized in VA will be more expensive. SPLIT CORE PRIMARY for easy connection to an existing installation using a busbar or cable primary Power (VA) in class Weight 00 A. 0. 0 A. 0 0 0. 0 A 0 0. A 0 0. 00 A 0 0 0. Dissipated power per metre double line Cross-section Secondary A Secondary A. mm 0. VA 0.0 VA. mm 0. VA 0.0 VA mm 0. VA 0.009 VA mm 0. VA 0.00 VA SECONDARY: OR A A secondary current of A causes less loss on the line than a A current. A secondary current of A requires less winding for the CT, and so a less expensive and lighter CT than with a current of A. ENT CHANGES... CONNECTING YOUR CT supply use Secondary It is important to always install the transformer in the right direction, especially on three-phase networks, so as not to invert the phase shift between the current and the voltage on one or more of the phases. The shunts create a standard voltage drop that can be processed by measuring instruments. Though essentially used on direct currents, they can also be used on alternative currents. HOW TO INSTALL A SHUNT? Avoid overheating A shunt emits heat that must be evacuated in order to maintain the accuracy class. Up to 00 A the heat evacuation is by natural convection. eyond this, natural convection must be associated with thermal dissipation in the conductors on which it is mounted. Natural convection is best achieved when the shunt is in the horizontal position, with the blades oriented vertically. Calculation of the heat evacuated is carried out by the contractor, especially evacuation by linking bars (size, disposition, number). For use on direct currents, it is recommended not to go beyond 0 % of the nominal current of the shunt and to ensure that the temperature of the latter does not exceed /K: power supply side C (heating plus ambient temperature). For high currents, forced convection is compulsory. Limit derivation currents It is possible to connect one or more receivers to one shunt on condition that the derivation current or the sum of the derivation current is relatively small compared to the nominal rating. You must take into account the additional voltage drop introduced by the length of the derivation wires. The derivation current generally accepted to remain in the accuracy class is ma. /L: installation side FOCUS How to know whether the accuracy class of a CT is respected? If on a CT primary, the current is between 00 % and 0 % of the nominal current, the stated class is respected. In case of a lower current, the IEC standard 0- specifies the tolerances accepted. This tolerance is greater the smaller the measured current is with respect to the rating. The financial importance of selecting an accuracy class adapted to your CT For a consumption of 000 MWh/year and a cost of 0,0 /kwh CT class : ±0 000 kwh = ± 000 CT class 0.: ± 000 kwh = ± 000 CT class 0.S: ± 0 kwh = ± 0 This calculation takes into account neither the class of the measuring instruments, nor loss occurring on the network cables. CT safety rules You must never open the secondary circuit of a CT supplied on the primary. The very high voltage created may cause bodily harm or irreparable damage to the transformer. efore working on the secondary of a CT, it must be short circuited. When a CT is not in use (secondary open) the secondary must be short-circuited before powering up the system. Installation of CT protection unit (PRTC type) allows safe conditions in case of maintenance on instruments connected on a CT secondary circuit. Further remarks concerning shunts They are manufactured using a coppermagnesium-nickel alloy, offering long term stability and a low temperature coefficient. The shunt must be mounted on an insulated support in compliance with the usual rules applicable to current conductors (in LV see NFC 00). An extremity may be grounded depending on use. QUIZZ Test your knowledge: An oversized CT is: inefficient dangerous outside the class A CT secondary current of A is more expensive: true false sometimes Which of these ranges enables you to obtain the least energy metering error?
