SCIENCE IN KENYA Scientific institutions in Kenya include the UNESCO Regional Office for Science and Technology for Africa, in Nairobi; coffee and tea research foundations; grasslands and plant-breeding research stations; and numerous centers for medical, agricultural, and veterinary research. Medical research focuses on the study of leprosy and tuberculosis. The National Council for Science and Technology advises the government on scientific matters, and the Kenya National Academy of Sciences promotes advancement of learning and research; both organizations were founded in Nairobi in 1977. The University of Nairobi, founded in 1956, has colleges of agriculture and veterinary sciences, health sciences, architecture and engineering, and biological and physical sciences. Kenyatta University, founded in 1939 at Nairobi, has faculties of science and environmental education. Moi University, founded in 1984 in Eldoret, has faculties of forest resources and wildlife administration, science, technology, information sciences, environmental studies, health sciences, and agriculture. Edgerton University, founded in 1939 at Njoro, has faculties of agriculture and science. Other higher-education institutions include Jomo Kenyatta University College of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya Medical Training College, and Kenya Polytechnic, all in Nairobi, and five other institutes of science and technology elsewhere in the country. In 1987 97, science and engineering students accounted for 19% of college and university enrollments. scientific institutions in Kenya include the UNESCO Regional Office for Science and Technology for Africa, in Nairobi; coffee and tea research foundations; grasslands and plant-breeding research stations; and numerous centers for medical, agricultural, and veterinary research. Since its inception the Faculty of Science has played a pivotal role in the expansion of knowledge frontiers in the field of Physical and biological sciences geared towards finding solutions to technological problems at both industrial and household levels. The Faculty of Science in Kenya constitutes of eight academic

departments and in line with the Universities Vision and Mission, is continuously achieving scientific excellence through Teaching, Research and Knowledge transfer. Teaching Science The faculty attracts the best students (inter)nationally who undertake the broad range of disciplines that are market responsive in preparing the scientists and professionals for the challenges of tomorrow. Research Researchers in the faculty of science are actively contributing to scientific knowledge through the various research projects. Knowledge transfer Through linkages with industry, schools and local communities, the staff, students and alumni are able to define, analyze and provide solutions to scientific issues. Research findings are disseminated through publications in high impact professional journals. With the increased interest in evidence based policy making informed by scientific research findings, the faculty appreciates its vital role in providing scientific solutions to influence policy. The faculty is committed to maintaining excellence in teaching, research and partnership in physical and biological sciences. Core Values Quality Team work

Productivity Transparency Professionalism Innovation IntegritySelf Development and Hard work Mandate and Functions To train requisite human resources at both managerial and supervisory grades. To enhance the quality of education training and managerial excellence. To faciliate appropriate programmes for specialized non-degree training in Science as a bridge to enroll for degrees and market driven degree programmes. To promote basic and applied research in the fields of Science. To promote collaboration with small-scale industrialists for design and development of detergents. To promote linkages with other institutions of renowned research in pure and applied Sciences. Core Values Quality The faculty shall offer quality training and quality learning facilities to the satisfaction of her customers and stakeholders Productivity and Team Work Performance and team spirit to achieve the Vision, Mission and Strategic Objectives of the Universities. Moi University University of Nairobi

The University of Nairobi (UON) is the largest university in Kenya. Although its history as an educational institution goes back to 1956, it did not become an independent university until 1970 when the University of East Africa was split into three independent universities: Makerere University in Uganda, the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, and the University of Nairobi. In 2002 the University had some 22,000 students, of whom 17,200 were undergraduates and 4,800 postgraduates.the university has launched several policy frameworks and introduced module 2 degrees to cope with the demand of higher education in Kenya. Such fields includes Accelerator physics, large hadron physics (LHC), Linear Collider Physics, Quantum Electrodynamics (QED), Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD, Computational Physics (CP), Higher Energies and Low Energies. Apart from the above disciplines there is no equipment to carry out experimental physics related to areas like At Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE), Supersymmetry (SUSY), At Televetron Large Symmetry (ATLAS). Again there is no infrastructure to handle such large experiments even if they acquire equipment today. Trained experts in such areas are needed and with the help of CERN, FERMILAB, ICTP, IAEA, ECT, among other organizations we can make it. Currently the fields of physics in the master s and PhD levels include the following: 1. Electronics 2. Nuclear physics 3. Theoretical physics 4. Particle physics 5. Space Science 6. Solid state physics 7. Geophysics 8. Laser & Radiation physics
