4 UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES FACULTY OF SCIENCE FIRST UNIVERSITY EXAMINATION IN SCIENCE (including Denominated Degrees) Marks Maxima: Pass Standard: 100 marks for each subject (15 ECTS Credits) 40% in each subject. Honours Standard: First Honours Second Honours All subjects - 70% 60% Progression to Next Level of Course: Students are required to achieve an overall result of pass in their first year examinations before being permitted to progress to the second year of the programme. Award of Honours: Honours may be awarded in separate subjects provided the examination is passed as a whole. Candidates who pass by compensation are not eligible for Honours. Honours are awarded at the Summer examination only. Carry Forward: The First University Examination in Science must be passed as a whole. However, in the case where a candidate fails in the examination as a whole, but has obtained a mark of 40% or more in one or more subjects, the Board may decide to carry forward these marks to ALL succeeding examinations within the following time-limit: two years from the date of entering the course. Compensation: Compensation may only be used to enable a candidate to pass the examination as a whole. Compensation may be allowed in one subject only. Candidates who do not fall below 35 per cent may be passed, at the discretion of the Board, if they obtain in the other subjects excess marks above the pass standard equal to double the deficiency. Marks carried forward from Summer to Autumn at the first sitting of the examination may count for compensation but marks carried forward to subsequent years do not, except in exceptional circumstances, count for this purpose. Subject Groupings: All students taking the Undenominated B.Sc. Degree in Science must present for one of the following groups. Group A - Group B - Group C - Mathematics, Introduction to Mathematical Physics, Chemistry and Experimental Physics. In all examinations for courses given by the Department of Mathematical Physics, a proportion of the marks, up to a maximum of 30% may be awarded for either orals, practicals, projects, tests, or for any combination thereof. In the First, Second and Third Year Physics courses (Experimental Physics, Applied Physics and Electronics) up to 10% of the 70% allotted to the written examination may be derived from continuous assessment and all of the 30% allotted to the practical component may be derived from the Year's Work and other related forms of continuous assessment. In First Year Marine Science (1MR1) and First Year Health & Safety Systems (1HF1), the combined Physics/Chemistry course (CP102) will need to be passed on the average. A candidate who passes this course on the average whilst failing a component module, will not be required to repeat the failed component. A candidate who fails CP102 on the average will be permitted to retain any passing mark (until the next sitting only), but will be required to repeat the failed component. 7 SECOND UNIVERSITY EXAMINATION IN SCIENCE (Including Denominated Degree Programmes) Each student must study 60 ECTS Credits in the combination or Marks Maxima: Pass Standard: 100 marks for each module. 40% in each course module (20 or 10 ECTS Credits). Honours Standard: First Class 70% Second Class Grade 1 60% Second Class Grade 11 50% Results of Semester I examinations will be communicated to students by means of the following grades: Percentage Grade A B C C D E E F Examinations for Second Science will be held at the end of Semester I or the end of Semester II. The results of Semester I examinations will be incorporated with Semester II results to give an overall result. A candidate who passes a 20 ECTS Credit subject on the average between Semester I and Semester II whilst failing a 10 ECTS Credit component, will not be required to repeat the failed component. A candidate who fails a 20 ECTS Credit subject on the average between Semester I and Semester II will be permitted to retain the passing mark, but will be required to repeat the failed component. Repeat examinations for subjects failed either in Semester I or Semester II will be held in the Autumn. If, at the next sitting, the candidate does not attain a passing mark on the average in the 20 ECTS Credit subject, he/she will be required to re-sit the entire 20 ECTS Credit subject. Progression to Third Year: Students are required to achieve an overall result of pass in their second year examinations before being permitted to progress to the third year of the programme. Award of Honours: Provided the candidate attains the standard at the first attempt at examination in that subject, Honours may be awarded in individual subjects provided that the candidate passes the examination as a whole. Candidates who pass by compensation are not eligible for Honours. Honours are normally awarded at the Summer Examination only. In the 20 ECTS Credit subject MM292 Mathematical Science (Option) of the Denominated Degree Programme in Computing Studies (Mathematical Science/Computing Option), honours may only be awarded if the candidate has taken all of the components of the subject at Honours level. Honours will not be awarded in any mathematical options other than MA280. 7

8 Carry Forward: The Second University Examination in Science must be passed as a whole. However in the case where a candidate fails in the examination as a whole but has obtained a mark of 40% or more in any approved 10 ECTS Credit module (stand-alone) or 20 ECTS Credit subject, the Board may decide to carry forward these marks to ALL succeeding examinations within the following time-limit: two years from the date of passing the First University Examination in Science. Compensation: Compensation may only be used to enable a candidate to pass the examination as a whole. Compensation may only be allowed in a 20 ECTS Credit subject or in two 10 ECTS Credit stand-alone subjects. Candidates who do not fall below 35 per cent may be passed, at the discretion of the Board, if they obtain in the other subjects excess marks above the pass standard equal to double the deficiency. Progression to Final Year Honours of the B.Sc. degree on the basis of the Second University Examinations in Science For all the courses listed below a student must pass the First and Second University Examinations in Science (whether by compensation or not) and attain the standards indicated. In the case of Denominated Degrees, students failing to reach these standards may proceed to honours on the basis of the results of the Third University examination in Science. However, in the case of the Undenominated Science degree programme (BS), students who fail to reach these standard in their 2 nd Year but who attain a minimum of 55% in the designated courses in 3 rd Year will not be guaranteed entry to 4 th Year Honours. Such entry will be at the discretion of the Science Faculty Executive Committee in consultation with the Department concerned. Honours B.Sc. Degree in Mathematics: Obtain a minimum average of 50% in Second Year Honours Mathematics (MA280). Honours B.Sc. Degree in Applied Mathematics: Obtain a minimum average of 50% in Second Year Honours Mathematical Physics (MP280). Honours B.Sc. Degree in Applied Mathematics and Physics: Obtain a minimum average of 50% in both of the Second Year subjects MP280: Honours Mathematical Physics and EP201: Experimental Physics. Progression is also subject to approval by the Heads of Department of Mathematical Physics and Experimental Physics. Three Year B.Sc. Honours Degree in Mathematical Science A student who passes the Second University Examination in Science and who reaches Honours standards in Mathematics and Mathematical Physics or who reaches First Class Honours standard in one of these subjects may enter for the Honours B.Sc. Degree course in Mathematical Science. CS Denominated Degree Programme in Computing Studies (Mathematical Science/ Computing Option). Pass the Second Year examination as a whole and obtain 50% in the core (i.e. an average of 50% between the two subjects CS201 and MM291 and a pass in each of the two subjects) and a pass in the third subject. Students who do not qualify for Honours in Second Year courses which may lead to the Four Year B.Sc. Degree in Mathematics or the Four Year B.Sc. Degree in Applied Mathematics or the B.Sc. Honours Degree in Computing Studies (Mathematical Science/Computing), may, with the permission of the Departments concerned take appropriate Honours courses in Third Year programmes with a view to reaching a standard which will make them eligible for consideration by Faculty for entry to courses leading to the B.Sc. Honours Degree examination in any of the three courses named above. 8

BY Biotechnology A mark of 50% in the Second Science Examination in any two of BI201 Biochemistry, CH201 Chemistry or MI201 Microbiology. EH Earth and Ocean Sciences A mark of 50% in the Second Science Examination in one of the following four subjects: EOS206: Earth Sciences I, EOS207: Earth Sciences II, EOS208: Ocean Sciences, EOS209: Environmental Geosciences, EOS210: History of the Earth and Oceans. EL Experimental Physics and Applied Physics and Electronics A minimum average of 50% in the Second Science Examination in the subject EP201. EV Environmental Science A minimum average of 50% in the Second Science Examination in two of the following subjects: BT201 Botany, CH201 Chemistry, ZO201 Zoology. 11 THIRD UNIVERSITY EXAMINATION IN SCIENCE (Including Denominated Degree Programmes) Each student must study 60 ECTS Credits, with each subject comprising between 12 and 36 ECTS Credits Marks Maxima: Pass Standard: Compensation: 100 marks for each module. 40% in each subject (12 or 24 or 36 ECTS Credits) None. Honours Standard: First Class 70% Second Class, Grade 1 60% Second Class, Grade 11 50% Results of Semester I examinations will be communicated to students by means of the following grades: Percentage Grade A B C C D E E F Examinations for Third Science will be held at the end of Semester I or the end of Semester II. A candidate who passes a 24 ECTS Credit or 36 ECTS Credit subject on the average between Semester I and Semester II will not be required to repeat any failed component. A candidate who fails a 24 ECTS Credit subject or 36 ECTS Credit subject on the average between Semester I and Semester II will be permitted to retain any passing mark in a component module, but will be required to repeat the failed component. Repeat examinations for subjects failed either in Semester I or Semester II will be held in the Autumn. If, at the next sitting, the candidate does not attain a passing mark on the average in the 24 ECTS Credit subject or 36 ECTS Credit subject, he/she will be required to re-sit the entire 24 ECTS Credit subject or 36 ECTS Credit subject. Award of Honours: Honours may be awarded in individual subjects of 12, 24 or 36 ECTS Credits. Honours may be awarded in individual subjects provided that the candidate passes the examination as a whole. Honours are awarded at the Summer Examination only. Honours will not be awarded in subjects taken at the pass level. Standard for Distinction: Candidates who attain a total of about 600 marks, but who are ineligible to proceed to 4 th Year Honours, may be awarded the Degree with Distinction. The Board of Examiners may decline to award the degree with Distinction notwithstanding the attainment of the required aggregate mark if an inadequate standard is shown in one of the subjects. 11

12 Note: The examination must be passed as a whole. However, a candidate who has obtained a mark of 40% or more in any approved 36 ECTS Credit subject or 24 ECTS Credit subject or 12 ECTS Credit subject may be permitted by the examiners to hold and be credited with the marks obtained in these units for the purpose of proceeding to the B.Sc. (General) Degree within the following time - limits: two years from the date of passing the Second University Examination in Science. A student who has failed a 12/10 ECTS Credit stand-alone subject will be deemed to have passed the B.Sc. (General) Examination (but will not be permitted to progress to Honours) provided: An average mark of 40% or more is obtained across all 60 ECTS Credits and Provided that a minimum mark of 30% has been obtained in the failed 12/10 ECTS Credit subject. The above concession will not apply to any 12/10 ECTS Credit component other than a 12/10 ECTS Credit stand-alone subject. It will not apply to a 12 ECTS Credit component which forms part of a 24 ECTS Credit or 36 ECTS Credit subject. Progression to Final Year Honours of the B.Sc. degree on the basis of the Third University Examinations in Science For all the courses listed below a student must pass the First, Second and Third University Examinations in Science (whether by compensation or not) and attain the standards indicated. In the case of Denominated Degrees, students failing to reach the standards set out in their 2 nd Year may proceed to honours on the basis of the results of the Third University examination in Science. However, in the case of the 3BS9: Undenominated Science degree programme (excluding 3BS3, 3BS4 and 3BS10), students who fail to reach the standard set out in their 2 nd Year but who attain a minimum of 55% in the designated courses in 3 rd Year will not be guaranteed entry to 4 th Year Honours. Such entry will be at the discretion of the Science Faculty Executive Committee in consultation with the Department concerned. 3BS9: Third Science Subjects (other than Mathematics, Mathematical Science, Applied Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and Physics): Obtain at the Third University Examination a minimum average of 50% or 55% in the 24 or 36 ECTS Credits designated as the subject core. Students who have attained the appropriate standard at the Second University examination in Science are deemed to be in Third Year 12

Biomedical Science 3BO2: Third Science (Biomedical Science- Honours) Obtain at the Third University Examination a minimum average of 50% in the 24 ECTS Credits designated at core material in the major subject (AN310; BI320; PM302, SI330). 3BO1: Third Science (Biomedical Science- General) Obtain at the Third University Examination a minimum average of 55% in the 24 ECTS Credits designated at core material in the major subject (AN310; BI320; PM302, SI330). Biotechnology 3BY2: Third Science (Honours) Biotechnology Obtain a minimum average of 50% in the Third Year Examination between BI316 Biochemistry (12 ECTS Credits), MI3** Microbiology (12 ECTS Credits) and BG301 Biotechnology (12 ECTS Credits). 3BY1: B.Sc. (General) degree Biotechnology Obtain a minimum average of 55% in the Third Year Examination between BI316 Biochemistry (12 ECTS Credits), MI3** Microbiology (12 ECTS Credits) and BG301 Biotechnology (12 ECTS Credits).
