Job Description JOB TITLE: Registered Nurse DIRECTORATE: Diagnostics and Clinical Support Interventional Radiology Theatres GRADE: Band 5 REPORTS TO: Sister/Charge Nurse ACCOUNTABLE TO: Matron JOB SUMMARY Assess the care needs of patients and develop a programme of care which is evaluated and amended as appropriate. Carry out relevant forms of direct and indirect patient care without direct supervision. Regularly take charge of the clinical area in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility or his/her deputy. Utilises and integrates evidence into practice. The post holder is required to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Clinical 1.1 HWB2 Be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development of programmes of care ensuring that these are evaluated and amended as appropriate. 1.2 Core1 Document the condition and progress of patients and report to medical staff and/or senior nursing staff any areas of concern. 1.3 HWB5 Undertake nursing procedures and techniques in accordance with agreed policies and guidelines. 1.4 Core2 Demonstrate clinical procedures to registered and unregistered staff as required. 1.5 G6 Once competent in team management skills, takes charge of the clinical area on a regular basis in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility or his/her deputy. 1.6 Participate in the support and implementation of Essence of Care guidelines, nursing metric results and patient feedback (Fabio Frog). 1. 7 HWB5 Be aware of your role with regard to the Medicines Code of Practice. 1.8 Comply with all Trust policies and risk assessments with particular regard to the policies and procedures carried out in the event of maintaining staff and patient safety. 1.9 Liaise with other clinical areas providing appropriate policies, education and clinical expertise in order to facilitate the management of patients with special requirements. 1.10 HWB5 Maintain an awareness of the developments in the care and treatment of patients in order to be able to carry out duties competently and efficiently. 1.11 HWB1 Plan, develop and implement approaches to promote health and wellbeing of patients and improve their health status. Directorate Specific Clinical responsibilities to be added here 1.12 Directorate/Speciality Specific : 1.To work flexible hours particularly covering a late finish, and providing an out of hours oncall nursing service, - as required by the department to meet the needs of providing patient care. 2. To participate in the link nurse programme ie. Diabetic and Infection Control 3. Have an understanding of local safety rules, protective clothing and equipment, (including wearing a lead apron for several hours at a time,) with regards to working in an area using radiation. 4. Following a protocol for Radiology, nurses are required to administer IV sedation to patients undergoing specific procedures, such as Transjugular liver biopsies, PTC s (Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiogram) and Radiological Inserted Gastrostomy. 5. To assist the Radiologist as scrub nurse with invasive radiological procedures such as angioplasty, embolisation, stenting and biopsies. 6. To perform post procedural care and observations on the sedated patient

To take on the Co-ordinators role (as per rota), by being responsible, with Sisters support, for the daily running of the Interventional Radiology Theatres co-ordinating procedure lists, allocating staff and making any necessary changes to patient lists in consultation with the Radiographers and Radiologists. 8. To be responsible for ordering and maintaining pharmacy stock within the Department. 9. To work in other areas of the Department as required, ie CT, MRI, Bariums and Ultrasound 2. Communication 2. 1 Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team in order to promote efficient patient care and maintain effective channels of communication. 2.2 Report all accidents and untoward incidents to the nurse in charge Of the area and complete an incident form in accordance with Trust policy. 2.2 Maintain complete and accurate patient records ensuring that they provide a detailed account of all care provided throughout the patients stay. 2.3 Communicate with and provide support for patients relatives, carers and visitors. 2.4 Be aware of the need for confidentiality both within the written and spoken word and ensure correct storage of patients records at all times, to comply with the Information Governance Code. 2.5 Liaise with other clinical areas as necessary for the coordination of patient care and the smooth running of the ward/unit/department. 3. Managerial 3.1 Support a culture of teamwork within the clinical area. 3.2 Collaborate with all members of the clinical area to ensure efficient running of the ward/unit/department. 3.3 Use resources effectively in order to provide quality patient care whist having an awareness of budgetary issues. 3.4 Assist the Sister/Charge Nurse in introducing new members of staff to their duties, act as a preceptor to newly qualified staff. 3.5 G6 Supervise and assess registered and unregistered staff as appropriate. 3.6 Undertake a recognised mentoring course 3.7 Take all reasonable steps to ensure the safe keeping of patients property in accordance with Trust policy. 3.8 Ensure where appropriate that the programmes of training for learners, both student nurses and nursing auxiliaries/health care assistants are completed. 3.9 Undertake formal and informal teaching sessions as required and undertake training to act as a mentor to students. 3.10 Following appropriate training, carry the directorate/floor bleep.

3.11 Contribute to the monitoring and control of expenditure and use of resources. 3.12 Participate in Clinical Supervision 3.13 Maintain own professional competence through on going professional development to include clinical supervision, annual mandatory training, appraisal process and personal development planning 3.14 Be accountable for own professional practice in accordance with NMC code of conduct 2008 4. General 4.1 Be aware of need for own personal development and be prepared to attend and undertake any necessary training, being aware of the need to develop oneself and to strive to increase personal knowledge. 4.2 Contribute to making the clinical environment conductive to learning and development where individuals feel able to discuss ideas and action as well as showing initiative. 4.3 Undertake any Working in New Ways Packages, which have been identified by the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse and are integral to the role requirements and specialty area. Under normal circumstances these must be completed in accordance with the Working in New Way s Policy and Guidelines.
