He intrduced Keith Thmajan, CEO f United Way, and member f the Cradle t Career Cuncil, wh shared highlights abut Cradle t Career: Cming t agreement n the three pririties t start Eliminating disparities in children and yuth success Linking cmmunity and family supprts t children and yuth success Ensuring that all students enter schl prepared t learn Thrugh prcess t identify the partners with capacity, credibility and skill t help cnvene and rganize varius cllabratives fcused n ur pririties Three initial cllabratives are beginning this wrk. This is ne. Ready fr Kindergarten is fcused n early learning. Eliminating Disparities in Student Success is fcused n the achievement gap with a specific fcus n racial and ethnic disparities This cllabrative,, is fcused n cnnecting cmmunity and family supprts t student success There is a need in ur cmmunity fr a yuth develpment intermediary s that we can wrk mre cllectively and efficiently We nw get t build capacity fr schls and Out f Schl Time prgrams t build relatinships with each ther and align their effrts. Kevin Palau, President f Luis Palau Assciatin, is als a member f the Cradle t Career Cuncil. The Luis Palau Assciatin is actively wrking t mbilize the faith cmmunity in supprt f schls A sil mentality exists in the faith cmmunity, and there is a need fr sme intentinal hard wrk arund this The Luis Palau Assciatin recently received a grant t hire staff t create faith partnerships with schls Why are yu here? Bill Sctt, SUN Service System Crdinating Cuncil, and c-cnvener f the Cllabrative, facilitated intrductins. Lisa Sedlar frm New Seasns, and als a member f the Cradle t Career Cuncil, was unable t make it tday. She asked Bill t relay that: There are many businesses are cmmitted t Cradle t Career There are multiple different ways fr businesses t supprt the cmmunity but it is up t them t figure it ut The Cuncil hpes that this cllabrative can help the business cmmunity cnnect and figure ut hw best t be a supprt SUN applied t be a Cnvening Partner because we wanted t expand ur reach and bring in new partners that will help us apprach cmmunity issues mre effectively SUN is nt the subject f this cllabrative - itʼs abut a cmmunity effrt supprting kids

The cllabrative will be different frm SUN in several ways: Opprtunity t braden ur wrk beynd ur current partners and services - and t lk at actins that can supprt all schls nt just the SUN Cmmunity Schl sites New partners will be at the table, actively invlved in a way they have nt been befre - allws us t bring the strength f ur existing cllabratin and strng set f partnerships t the table t engage with partners wh haven't been as clsely linked in the past - particularly higher educatin, business and faith, but als cmmunity rganizatins wh aren't SUN cntractrs. Nt business as usual - lking fr hw we can engage in different ways Sme f the actins/slutins may have little r n relatinship t SUN SUN and PSU are bth cntributing resurces t the cllabrative Lri Kenney, staff fr the cllabrative Eliz Rser, primary cntact, will be handling lgistics and cmmunicatin Weʼre a partnership. With all f yu. This is the beginning f a new cnversatin. 2 Bill Baney prvided additinal cntext abut PSUʼs rle as a c-cnvener f the cllabrative Center fr Imprvement f Child and Family Services is hused within the Schl f Scial Wrk at Prtland State University Lead training, educatin, and research arund child and family services and systems Fcus n multi-leveled, systems appraches Early Childhd, Wraparund Oregn, Family Invlvement Matters Wrking n building sustainable and systemic infrastructures Excited t partner with SUN as the cnvening partners fr the cllabrative Intrductins Bill Sctt asked everyne in the rm t share their name, rganizatin, and ne wrd r phrase that drives their wrk. (See Appendix at end f meeting ntes.) Members were asked what key themes they heard during intrductins: There are many peple that have wrked tgether ver the years. It is gd t get tgether and talk abut ne fcus. There is a fcus n building ladders, nt just safety nets. Iʼm blwn away at hw many rganizatins and peple are invlved in this effrt; if we can bring everyne tgether, it is such a pwerful pprtunity. The netwrk that is represented is mind-bggling. Having an entity like this that can fcus energy tgether is very exciting. S many peple are here there are many partnerships. We need t ensure families are part f this a very imprtant part f the wrk. Nate Waas Shull, All Hands Raised, prvided further cntext n the larger Cradle t Career partnership and the rigin f the cllabratives: Nate has been active in develping each f the cllabratives that are launching and will cntinue t be active in the prcess He will link and cmmunicate ur wrk as a cllabrative back t the Cradle t Career Steering Cmmittee and Cuncil Nate als helps lead the Cradle t Career Data Team in partnership with PSU All Hands Raised cmmits t building the capacity f cllabrative members,

We need t get them t the table. We are at an early stage. Brad calls went ut fr invitatins t this meeting There are different ways fr rganizatins t be invlved We expect there will be nging engagement; cming and ging f different rganizatins This is nt a shrt term prject We need t be sure t have the vices and knwledge f the cmmunity in the rm Cmmunities f clr, yuth, families There have been sme specific cnversatins arund the tpic f launching a cllabrative fcused specifically n issues related t discnnected yuth and thse cnversatins cntinue; alternative schls have been active in thse cnversatins. What abut kids in private schls, hme schl? The subject f this cllabrative is all kids and families in Multnmah Cunty If yu think f grups that need t be invlved, please let us knw This is an nging prcess. We must always ask urselves wh is nt at the table? This is an everybdy issue. Itʼs nt just public, private, r alternative schls. Itʼs abut everyne. Are health systems represented? Jill Daniels frm the Cunty Health shuld be invlved What abut the ther cunties in the metr area? We are fcused n the 6 majr schl districts within Multnmah Cunty I wuld lve t see the arts mre represented in this cllabrative. Physical health, pediatricians and mental health prviders shuld als be here. Family members have a wealth f knwledge abut what wrks and what desnʼt wrk. We need utreach t families. Cntinuus Imprvement Overview Kira Higgs, Cntinuus Imprvement Facilitatr fr All Hands Raised, will be wrking with all the cllabratives. She shared a PwerPint presentatin highlighting the fur tenets f cntinuus imprvement: Custmer Driven Imprvement Fcus Cllabratin Data-based Decisin Making

The tw key dcuments weʼll be creating tgether are the cllabrative Charter and Actin Plan. Befre we start wrking n strategies, weʼll describe the specific prblem we want t address tgether, and weʼll use data t define and benchmark it. Reviewing the cllabrative Descriptin Step ne in develping the Charter is the Descriptin. It captures wh we are and ur verall purpse. Kira said that when the Cradle t Career Cuncil apprved the cllabrative, it did s with the understanding that the Descriptin might change nce cllabrative members came t the table tgether. A ne-page handut cntained the Descriptin and invited member feedback. Kira prvided instructins n hw r rganize feedback. Sheets were turned in at the end f the meeting. Peple were asked t include name and cntact infrmatin if they wanted a fllw up cnversatin abut the cmments they submitted. Lens n the Prblem Step tw in develping the Charter is a clear Prblem Statement. Kira asked members t write dwn prblems in terms f student utcmes; there is n right r wrng prblem t chse. Hwever, there is a specific frmat: ne prblem per sticky, include data (number, percentage, dllar amunt, X if unknwn), include data surce (if yu knw it), keep it lcal. Als, dnʼt be vague and dnʼt write strategies. That will cme later. Kira prvided tw examples f what a gd prblem statement fcused n student utcmes lks like. After peple had spent a few minutes filling ut stickies, Kira asked fr membersʼ impressins frm ding the exercise. There are s many peple in the rm; t find smething that tgether we can all d, will be tugh. This felt a little scary I take the infrmatin abut my district very persnally. Thereʼs insecurity abut knwing that an issue des exist, but yu canʼt quite remember the data r surces. Dnʼt want t be at risk f discrediting the truth. Knwing that is it an issue but nt knwing the numbers, which is frustrating. Summarizing input Kira read several sticky ntes and asked what the grup nticed abut the infrmatin? Fcus. Sme f the effrts are wrking. One f the cl things abut data is that it allws yu t track yur prgress. It is heartbreaking t hear abut things that are nt ding well. But data is a gd way t track imprvement. Kira cncluded by sharing we will mve mre deeply int defining the prblem at the next meeting, using pepleʼs stickies as the jumping ff pint. Cmpleting the Charter and Actin Plan fr a cllabrative takes abut 10-15 hurs. Tday was 4

a gd start. She plled the rm t see hw many peple culd attend a furhur r three-hur meeting in April. 5 Wh else needs t be invlved? Bill Baney invited members t lk arund the rm, and share wh else shuld be invited given the rle their rganizatin plays in cmmunity cnnectins with children and yuth.
