An apprenticeship or traineeship is a state training contract between an employer and an employee. Want to get an apprenticeship or traineeship? There are hundreds of apprenticeship and traineeship pathways in most industries where apprentices and trainees learn valuable industry skills and gain workplace experience for a particular occupation or trade. The training can take place either in the workplace, or at FedUni. While you are an apprentice or trainee, you will experience a combination of training methods to achieve your qualification as designed in your training plan. Apprenticeships An employer agrees to employ and train you until all competencies are achieved or for the term of the apprenticeship contract, if required. Apprenticeships usually take 3 4 years of full-time employment and training. You agree to follow instructions and attend required off-the-job and/or workplace-based training as outlined in your training plan. After the 3 month probationary period has passed, training contracts between the apprentice and the employer are legally binding. Once the probationary period of your training agreement has passed, all parties must agree in order for the contract to be cancelled. In the instance when the employer has an apprentice and sells the business, the apprentice s training contract is continued with the new business owners. Traineeships An employer agrees to employ you for the term of the traineeship. You agree to follow instruction and attend structured training. If an employer sells the business, the new owner is not obligated to keep you as a trainee. Mutual agreement is not required if you or your employer wish to end the traineeship contract. Traineeships usually take 12 18 months of full-time employment and training. As an apprentice or trainee you will: earn a wage as you train and develop your practical skills and knowledge receive a nationally accredited qualification enjoy flexible training arrangements receive workplace training and support benefit from the career opportunities generated by your employer. What do I need to do next? You must secure employment as an apprentice or trainee before any trade training can occur. You may also be able to start a part-time apprenticeship/ traineeship while still at school. There are a number of ways this can be managed and may include working in industry two days a week and going to trade school three days a week. How can I start an apprenticeship or traineeship? 1. Think about what areas you would like to work in (most careers now have apprenticeships and traineeships available). 2. Consider doing a preapprenticeship. See next page. 3. Update your resume. 4. Visit employers to drop off your resume and impress them with your enthusiasm. Speak to your local Group Training organisations, visit employment network providers, and check out local papers and employment websites. 5. Try volunteering your time and gain experience in the industry of your choice. 6. Be persistent! Contact us to receive information about training as an apprentice or trainee on 1800 333 864 or info@federation.edu.au FEDERATION UNIVERSITY AUSTRALIA 2017 COURSE GUIDE 7
Pre-Apprenticeships A pre-apprenticeship program gives you skills, knowledge and a pathway into an apprenticeship. The aim of a pre-apprenticeship is to teach you about your chosen career and to demonstrate to an employer that you have the skills and ability to succeed in an apprenticeship. Most pre-apprenticeship programs run for 14 to 18 weeks. During this time, you will study on-campus at FedUni. Some of the pre-apprenticeship programs include a work placement component, where you will have on-the-job work experience with local businesses. What do pre-apprentices learn? Pre-apprentices learn the hands-on skills which employers need. You will learn how to use the tools for your trade as well as train on full-size, up-to-date equipment in true to life situations. The work that you do during a pre-apprenticeship may give you credit towards your apprenticeship studies. Successful completion of a pre-apprenticeship can reduce the time it takes to complete your apprenticeship by up to 6 months. Pre-apprentices also gain valuable assistance with job searching skills, which will help you successfully find an apprenticeship when you have finished your program. How to apply Most of the pre-apprenticeship programs have two intakes each year, usually in February and July. In the lead up to the start of term, many of the programs will have an information session or invite you to attend an interview. s can be made using the application form for VET (TAFE) programs. If you need help applying, contact us on 1800 333 864 and we can provide you with information for the next intake. For more information visit federation.edu.au/tafe Three good reasons to study at FedUni TAFE Great teachers Our teachers have worked in industry, and understand what it takes to become a successful trades person. They have been apprentices, and know what it s like to be starting out in the industry. Great facilities State-of-the-art trade training facilities include the Building and Construction Training Centre, which houses all of the construction trades, fully operating commercial kitchens as well as the Rural Sciences Skills Centre and the brand new Manufacturing Engineering Skills Centre. Great industry contacts As our teachers have trades experience and because FedUni has a long history in the trade training business, we have close ties with local industries and businesses. This results in a very high placement rate of pre-apprentices into apprenticeships with local companies. 8 FEDERATION UNIVERSITY AUSTRALIA 2017 COURSE GUIDE

One of the biggest questions you may be asking yourself is how much your studies will cost. Let s talk about money Along with course and student services and amenities fees, you may also need to pay for textbooks, field trips, equipment or uniforms. We re here to help with financial advice and assistance, to make your study experience as stress-free as possible. VET (TAFE) fees The best starting point for information about VET (TAFE) fees is online at federation.edu.au/tafefees. We strongly recommend all students who wish to study a VET (TAFE) program at FedUni view this information as it includes important details about government-subsidised training and requirements. Students may be eligible for Government-subsidised places if they meet the eligibility criteria and provide the required evidence. Some programs will be subject to material and excursion fees (this information is available from the program area). If you are an eligible concession card holder, you may also benefit from a lower tuition fee in select courses. Some courses are eligible for VET FEE-HELP, which is a Commonwealth Government loan scheme for the vocational education and training sector that enables eligible domestic students to defer all or part of their tuition fees. The loan is repaid via the Australian taxation system once a certain income threshold is reached. Higher education fees All FedUni undergraduate (Bachelor) programs and some postgraduate level programs offer Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). This means that if you re enrolled in an eligible program as a domestic student the Australian Government makes a contribution towards the cost of education and you only need to pay the Student Contribution Amount (SCA). Your annual SCA is based on the following bands and varies depending on the discipline of the subjects that you re studying. You ll be invoiced each semester and you are only charged for the subjects you enrol in during that semester. 2016 Annual Student Contribution Amounts (SCA) per Equivalent Full-Time Student Load (EFTSL) The amounts listed below are based on a standard, full-time enrolment (120 credit points per year) with all subjects in the same band. Band 1 $6,256 Band 2 $8,917 Band 3 $10,440 Behavioural Science, Clinical Psychology, Education, Foreign Languages, Humanities, Nursing, Social Studies, Visual & Performing Arts Agriculture, Allied Health, Built Environment, Computing, Engineering, Mathematics, Other Health, Science, Statistics, Surveying Accounting, Administration, Commerce, Dentistry, Economics, Law, Medicine, Veterinary Science Payment options (CSP) HECS-HELP is a government loan scheme that assists eligible students to defer payment of all or part of their Student Contribution Amount. The loan is then repaid through the tax system when your income reaches the minimum threshold for compulsory repayment ($54,126 in the 2015 16 income year). You also have the option of making full or partial payments before the census date of each semester. Please note that the 10% HECS-HELP discount for upfront payments of $500 or more will be removed from 1 January 2017. Australian citizens, permanent humanitarian visa holders and New Zealand citizen Special Category Visa holders who meet ALL of the requisite criteria are eligible for HECS-HELP. New Zealand citizens who do not meet the eligibility criteria and holders of permanent resident visas (excluding permanent humanitarian visa holders) are not eligible for HECS-HELP and SCA full upfront payment must be made by the census date of each semester. Further information about Student Contribution Amounts and your eligibility for HECS-HELP can be found at federation.edu.au/studentfees or studyassist.gov.au (NZ applicants search FAQ NZ). Student financial assistance We offer financial assistance options to eligible students. This assistance is available for a variety of purposes to assist students to complete their studies. Student Services and Amenities Fee FedUni uses the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) to maintain and enhance non-academic services and amenities that improve your student experience and support a wide range of student needs. The fee provides funding for services and amenities such as sporting and recreational activities, employment and career advice, child care, financial advice and food services. Postgraduate fees Postgraduate tuition fees are programbased annual fees and will vary according to the degree you re studying and your study load. The schedule of higher education tuition fees for domestic postgraduate students is available online. Please visit federation.edu.au/fees to find your program annual tuition fee. FEE-HELP is a government loan scheme that assists eligible domestic fee paying students to defer payment of all or part of their tuition fees. Repayment of the loan occurs through the tax system once your income exceeds the minimum threshold. Lump sum payments can also be made to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). If you do not have access to FEE-HELP full payment of tuition fees is due by the semester census date. Further information about tuition fees and your eligibility for FEE-HELP can be found at federation.edu.au/studentfees or studyassist.gov.au. You can also contact FedUni Student Finance on 1800 333 864 or email studentfees@federation.edu.au. Higher Degrees by Research Domestic students enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research program are provided with a Research Training Scheme place, which covers tuition fees. Additional costs You may have other costs on top of your tuition fees, which can vary between TAFE, undergraduate and postgraduate programs. For example, TAFE programs are likely to have more materials costs because they tend to be more practical. You should also consider other costs such as textbooks. Will I get a place? This is a question that hangs over the head of nearly every university applicant. At FedUni we provide as many options and support services as possible to make your dream of tertiary study a reality. Extra requirements s for study may need to be accompanied by further information, or have additional steps to apply. These extra requirements can include an interview, audition, literacy test or portfolio. If there are extra application requirements, you will find them in the program listing or at federation.edu.au/extra-application-requirements Police Check and Working With Children (WWCC) checks Some industries require background checks before you can participate (i.e. childcare/ education) therefore some programs require you to obtain a Working with Children Check (WWCC) and/or Police Check prior to confirmation of enrolment (at your own expense). For more information, visit justice.vic.gov.au/workingwithchildren or police.vic.gov.au International programs and non-resident students If you are not currently an Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia or New Zealand, please contact the International Student Programs Office on 1800 333 864 or federation.edu.au/international ATAR v Open Access selection Open Access at FedUni is aimed at providing more opportunities for students to study in higher education. Entry into our range of Open Access* programs is based on applicants meeting prerequisite study scores rather than a minimum Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). Although your ATAR is a consideration, the University s Open Access selection model places more emphasis on your potential to succeed at university study, and on your achievement of the specific entry requirements for your chosen degree. For current Year 12 students this means that, provided you have met the prerequisites of your chosen program of study, your achieved ATAR is not a factor in our decision to offer a place; therefore, your study scores will indicate your eligibility for a place when you receive your school results in December. Open Access eligibility is assessed within your VTAC or direct application no separate application is required. Some programs also require applicants to complete extra requirements which are tailored to ensure that we consider the information that is most relevant to your success. Depending on your program of choice, these requirements may include interviews, performance auditions, assessment of folios and supplementary forms. Consideration on equity grounds We place a high importance on providing equal opportunities for all applicants. This value is upheld by offering a range of educational opportunities to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. VTAC applications If you apply via VTAC and you wish to be considered for entry based on special circumstances (i.e. disability or financial disadvantage) please refer to the Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) information at vtac.edu.au/applying/seas application If you are required to apply directly to the University and feel that your eligibility for entry was lowered by circumstances during your education (such as having a disability, being from a non-english speaking background, living in a rural or isolated location, being affected by financial hardship or having a major setback during your studies) you can ask for this to be taken into account when your application is considered. Please include an additional personal statement to your application. For more information contact 1800 333 864 or info@federation.edu.au Deferring (putting your studies on hold) In most instances you can defer your offer in an undergraduate program for up to one year. This is a great option if you re considering a gap year or need time away from study for another reason. Deferment is not granted automatically, and can be requested online as part of the offer process. In some instances deferral is not possible due to an audition component of selection. If you have questions about deferring your program, please contact us on 1800 333 864 or email admissions@federation.edu.au It is advised that you check each program s requirements to ensure you are eligible for entry. Key career opportunities Scott Lowater Bachelor of Business I commenced study at TAFE after a gap year following school, and completed a Certificate III followed by an Advanced Diploma of Accounting. I then commenced studies in the Bachelor of Business majoring in accounting at the Gippsland Campus. The credit from the previous program allowed me to complete my degree in two years. The program was diverse and I acquired knowledge in accounting and other areas including foreign trading and advanced topics in finance. I enrolled in the Industry Placement Program (IPP), where the final year included paid work experience in an area relevant to the degree. Prior to completion of the degree, my IPP host organisation Patison Partners in Warragul offered me my current position. The job is rewarding. I can use my knowledge to help the community prosper. The reason I chose to be an accountant was to help local businesses be the best they can be. Stephanie Burzacott Bachelor of Management (Human Resources) I completed my course in 2015 after previously completing a Bachelor of Arts. My industry placement at Centacare enhanced my study/skill base as it gave me a more practical view on how Human Resource Management processes can be applied in a real work place setting. It was invaluable to me and gave me the opportunity to gain experience to put on my resume which resulted in my current job as a Human Resource Consultant. It means you stand out from the crowd and have the real world experience that most employers are after in a graduate. Federation Business School is very supportive and helps students create their future careers by giving them the confidence throughout their studies. When I have needed support from my program co-ordinator and lectures they have always been there to assist in any possible way. Bryce Magnuson Bachelor of Business (Honours) During my final year of the Bachelor of Business I dedicated time to weighing up post-university options. I considered the big picture in life and realised I wanted to continue studying, not just to further my education but to focus on something I was really interested in. This led me to enrol in an honours degree, which would allow me to pursue my interest in marketing while focusing on a topic I was passionate about. I enjoyed the experience and gained a great deal from it. Along with a huge sense of achievement, my honours studies provided personal development and academic growth. It also improved my problem solving skills and gave me valuable insight in an important area of study. Through my honours program I ve pursued my interest in marketing and consumer behaviour in the area of sustainable clothing production. Business Cognate Recognition Applicants with either undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications in business or management or commerce can apply for up to four credits into the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Master of Business Administration, thus shortening the duration of the selected program. Hairdressing and Beauty Innovation is central to the way we have designed our hair and beauty programs. A career in the hair and beauty industry is almost limitless. Your creativity and eye for fashion can lead you to a career in a high-end fashion salon, working in the theatre, entertainment and film industry, working on cruise ships or in specialist roles assisting people with a disability or illness to enhance their self image. Hayden Anton Diploma of Beauty Therapy Completion Year 2014 I have always wanted to make a career in the beauty field, but had no idea of where I wanted to study. After several Open Days and countless campus tours I arrived at FedUni TAFE and I knew that this was the place for me. I ve decided that if you love doing something don t hold back. I remember my grandmother saying that it is not worth living a life of what ifs. Life is about testing your limits. One of the most outstanding things about this program is the quality of the teachers. They have all worked successfully in the industry. The experience and information which I gained from them will stay with me for life. They are so approachable and committed and always available for one-on-one support. The course work was presented in a way which made it easy to grasp and we were given the hands on learning opportunities that have created the skills necessary to build a career. The facilities in the beauty department are perfect. They have everything that you will need and it was where I felt the most comfortable. My advice? Strive for a career that you will be happy to be in for the rest of your life. Life is way too short to be trapped in a job you don t like. There was little doubt I would end up at FedUni due to its highly-regarded Physical Education degree. After visiting the campus, it quickly became apparent that it was a caring and welcoming place. I enjoyed the range of courses offered Catherine MacLean many of which had a practical hands-on approach. The emphasis on formal Graduate: Physical Education school placements (I was able to complete one in Singapore) allowed me to develop my interpersonal and speaking skills and therefore prepare me for teaching full-time in my current position at Ballarat Clarendon College. The smaller class sizes compared to some of the larger Victorian universities ensured lecturers were easy to approach and contact. Outside the classroom, I benefited from numerous opportunities to develop my leadership skills as I was a Residential Advisor, First Year Mentor and Media Liaison Officer. University games and leadership conferences were just some of the fabulous experiences offered to me during my time at FedUni which I would strongly encourage others to take advantage of. *For information on Open Access please see page 9. 44 FEDERATION UNIVERSITY AUSTRALIA 2017 COURSE GUIDE

Advanced standing entry: credit transfer, recognition of prior learning and complementary credit according to the current University academic regulations. An interview may be required After originally getting a second round offer into Human Movement at FedUni, I ended up spending seven years at the completing a PhD in Sport Science. It wasn't until I was well into my first year that I realised that quite a number of graduates from FedUni had gone on to make quite significant contributions to the field of Sport Science in both a practical and academic sense. There is a certain bond all FedUni graduates have in the sport field. When you meet someone else who also studied there, inevitably a discussion about the early morning swimming classes, lake runs and social functions occurs. Studying at a relatively small university meant that I could develop quite good relationships with lecturers and in-turn be afforded industry based opportunities in a range of environments. It was these interactions with the academic staff in conjunction with simultaneous industry based experiences that enabled my curiosity for sporting performance to grow. My job now as a Senior Performance Analyst at the Australian Institute of Sport has enabled me to work with and learn from some of the best sport scientists, coaches, athletes and teams in the world. 46 FEDERATION UNIVERSITY AUSTRALIA 2017 COURSE GUIDE

Key career opportunities Harrison Fletcher Bachelor of Science I focused my degree on ecology and environmental management. One of the highlights of my studies is being part of the Industry Placement Program (IPP), which has allowed me to develop workplace skills. During my placement with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), I have assisted with the management of the Raymond Island koala population, the analysis of Australian fur seal pup numbers on Phillip Island, monitored brush-tailed rock wallabies and worked within grey headed flying fox colonies. Assisting members of the community in managing wildlife such as wombats and possums on their properties was also part of my work. The interaction with the environment, as well as the local community has been very rewarding. *For information on Open Access please see page 9.
