PROFESSORIAL STAFF ACADEMIC STUDIES (Music) Contract: Permanent, part-time (up to 0.5 FTE) Salary: 34,852-40,904 p.a. pro-rata (Including LWA) Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance is a forward thinking, contemporary and worldclass Higher Education Institution with a vision to redefine the conservatoire for the 21 st century. The Faculty of Music accounts for over 600 of the higher education (HE) students within Trinity Laban and delivers programmes of study for students from pre-degree to doctoral levels through an innovative combination of practical and academic studies through which it seeks to impart in its students the skills needed for a dynamic and sustainable career in the music profession. Integral to the Faculty of Music are the learning opportunities provided by the Academic Studies Department, who deliver core academic and vocational learning across all programmes of study within the Faculty. The team of Academic Studies teaching staff many of whom also contribute to instrumental/vocal/composition teaching within the Faculty each exemplify the multi-faceted skillset of modern musicians and thus provide important exemplars for students. The Faculty of Music seeks to appoint a suitably qualified candidate to a 0.5 FTE, permanent teaching position with effect from 1 September 2015. The successful candidate may have expertise in the fields of historical musicology, music theory, applied musicianship &/or music business (music leadership; audience development; mentoring & developing musicians). They will be expected to contribute to the development and delivery of curriculum, in particular teaching music history/context and/or applied musicianship and/or music entrepreneurship at undergraduate level, in addition contributing to teaching and the development of new curricula at postgraduate level and enhancing the Faculty s developing research culture. Consideration will be given to suitable individuals who apply to teach one or more of the specified areas (in exceptional cases the Faculty will consider offering a larger fraction to a candidate able to contribute to teaching in more than one of the listed fields). Applications from early career researchers seeking their first formal teaching position are also strongly encouraged. Following success in the Institution s first formal research submission (REF 2014) with established research strengths in composition and music technology, musicology, music psychology, and the performance of music (particularly contemporary music) our strategic priority are the development of a practice-led research hub with specialisms in creative practice/performance, performance science and performance pedagogy as well as text-based research in our disciplines; the further integration of our research and knowledge exchange/public engagement programmes; and increasing our research collaborations, seeking particularly to engage international partners. JOB DESCRIPTION Post: Department: Reporting to: Professorial Staff Academic Studies (Music) Faculty of Music Assistant Director of Music & Head of Performance Grade: 7 Contract: Permanent, part-time (up to 0.5 FTE) MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Teaching You will: teach modules/components in the areas of music history/context and/or applied musicianship and/or music business/audience engagement to undergraduate students, and contribute as appropriate to the teaching of taught postgraduate and/or research degree students as directed by the Assistant Director of Music and Head of Programmes; utilise innovative approaches to learning and teaching, taking account of student centred and research-informed approaches; develop pedagogic materials for inclusion within the Institutional VLE (Moodle) and/or other electronic platforms (e.g. the worldwide web) in support of relevant module/component learning opportunities; provide advice to students, inducting them to specified areas of the curriculum, ensuring the provision of accurate, high-quality and clear information about relevant learning opportunities, and answering ongoing queries throughout the academic year; be involved in the assessment of course work and examinations including operating as one of the Faculty of Music s trained internal practical assessment panel examiners as appropriate; contribute to the review of modules/components and programmes and quality assurance mechanisms; contribute to the planning and development of modules/components within relevant subject area(s); undertake a full pro-rata teaching load and take part in other teaching and teaching-related activities, as appropriate; maintain an active interest in pedagogic innovations in relation to both relevant module/component subject areas and music / education in general, keeping up-to-date with the teaching methods, standards and content of studies within other comparable institutions both within the UK and overseas. 3
Research (as appropriate) You will: contribute to the development of the Institution s research culture by undertaking original and independent research in a relevant/related field of music (practice, pedagogy, musicology, etc.); pursue and maintain a record of high-quality and original research outputs suitable for inclusion in the Institution s submission to future Research Excellence exercises; contribute to the Institutional research environment through national and international participation in research activities related to your specialist field(s); demonstrate the importance and value of research outputs to audiences beyond the Conservatoire and to contribute to the Institution s impact agenda; report on activity undertaken on an annual basis to the Head of Research. Administration You will: contribute to the administrative process of the Faculty, and as appropriate, of the wider Conservatoire; participate in, and make an active contribution to, relevant Faculty groups and committees including Programme Committees, Programme and team meetings, etc.; exercise initiative within assigned tasks and execute tasks within a timely manner; organise your own work effectively, prioritising as appropriate; undertake more demanding responsibilities as appropriate; provide written and/or verbal references for students as required. CONDITIONS OF SERVICE SUMMARY Contract: Hours: Location: Permanent, part-time (up to 0.5 FTE), subject to a one year probationary period. Up to 17.5 hours per week (35 hours per week pro-rata). Flexible working including regular evening and occasional weekend work is required. You will be based at the Faculty of Music s building, King Charles Court, Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, but you may also be required to work at the Laban Building, Faculty of Dance. Salary Scale: Trinity Laban Salary Scale, Grade 7, Incremental Points 30 36 34,852-40,904 p.a. pro-rata (including LWA). Salaries are paid on the last working day of each month direct into bank or building society accounts. Annual Leave: 40 days pro-rata in addition to Statutory, Bank and Public Holidays. Pension Schemes: The successful candidate will be auto-enrolled in to The Teachers Pension Scheme. The Conservatoire currently pays the Employers contribution of 14.1% of pensionable salary to the TPS. Where appropriate additional acknowledgement of research-active status (i.e. in relation to any staff member being submitted within the periodic Research Assessment exercises e.g. REF2014) may attract an allocation of research time within their contracted duties. A limited number of parking spaces are available at both sites, subject to availability. Our recently refurbished Cafeterias on both sites serve a range of hot and cold meals plus drinks and snacks.
