Learn abut civil rights and the respnsibilities f high schls and clleges under the IDEA, Sectin 504, and the ADA. Self-advcate with parents, teachers, and peers. With parent input select classes (e.g., wrd prcessing, public speaking, study skills) that will prepare them academically fr cllege r vcatinal/technical schl. Avid temptatin t retreat t lwer-track classes, if cllege-bund. Select slid cllege prep curses. Be wary f curse waivers and carefully cnsider implicatins f thse chices. Explre advantages and disadvantages f cmmunity clleges, vcatinal technical schls, and 4-year clleges given the learning disability and/r ADHD. Meet with lcal Department f Rehabilitatin Services (DRS) cunselr t determine their eligibility fr services. If eligible, ask cunselr fr assistance in vcatinal assessment, jb placement, and/r pstsecndary educatin r training.
