Community Arts Palmerston North Visiting Artists Scheme Massey University and Square Edge Residencies for Artists AN EXCITING INITIATIVE Massey University, the Palmerston North City Council and Community Arts Palmerston North (in its own right and as Manager of Square Edge building) have joined forces to offer an exciting opportunity for established or emergent artists for a residency in Palmerston North. The residency will provide opportunities for three artists over the course of each year to be based for one semester each at Massey University in a supportive environment with leading practitioners/academics in the School of English and Media Studies, along with the opportunity to work on a collaborative project with students and members of the Palmerston North Community in a leadership/creative role. In addition, an apartment will be provided by Community Arts Palmerston North within the Square Edge building providing a base/studio, as will promotional support within the community, opportunity for community interaction through a class, presentation of work, or a lecture, and a supportive environment with other artists within the community. AIMS OF THE SCHEME The aims of the scheme are: to facilitate a closer relationship between the City and the University; to provide a supportive environment for an artist to work on his/her own project; to provide a supportive living environment for an artist for the period of the residency; to provide an opportunity for an emergent or established artist to work with recognised mentors at university level; to provide the opportunity for students to benefit from an established artist s expertise; to provide the opportunity for artists in the city to benefit from an established artist s expertise; to provide the opportunity for an artist to work on a project that will provide both City and University benefit; to provide promotion and support to an artist whilst working in Palmerston North.

FORMAT OF THE RESIDENCY Three residencies of three months each are offered under the Visiting Artists Scheme. The residencies have been timed to fit with the academic year, providing the opportunity to work collaboratively with students and members of the Palmerston North community in a leadership role. The residency timetable is as follows: Semester One Literary Artist In Semester One, aside from developing his/her own projects, the literary artist will help student and community writers to develop their skills. Live readings and workshops will be held both in the City and at Massey University, the details of which will be negotiated between the artist, the Manawatu Community and Massey University. Semester Two Video/Film-Maker/Digital Artist Aside from working on his/her own projects, the film-maker/video artist will be involved in helping the development of students creative work. Semester Two sees the Annual Massey MuviMac Awards and the biennial Festival of New Arts. The opportunity will be provided for the resident artist to provide expertise and advice to participants of both these events. He/she will also be asked to participate in presentations and workshops for Massey and the wider community, details of which will be negotiated. Summer School Theatre-Director/ Practitioner Rehearsals for the Annual Summer Shakespeare production take place during the Summer Semester. Participants are drawn from Massey and the City, and the event takes place in the Victoria Esplanade to community audiences over a two-week period. The opportunity is provided to the resident artist to work with actors and the production team to bring this event to fruition. Presentations and workshops will also be offered at Massey University and the Manawatu Community, details of which will be negotiated. Throughout the year students are busy creating new works for the biennial Festival of New Arts, hosted by the School of English and Media Studies, through the Creative Writing papers, and in conjunction with the College of Education. In addition to the three specific projects identified above, the opportunity will be provided to the resident artists to work collaboratively with Students and Lecturers as they please on pieces that develop throughout the year. Community Arts Palmerston North and the Square Edge building acts as a physical focal point for emergent and community arts within the city and it is anticipated that the Resident artist will work with Community Arts Palmerston North and Square Edge Management to provide an opportunity to profile the Artist and introduce the community to the Artist s work. This may take the form of a performance, a viewing, a reading, etc or a class or lecture situation. Community Arts Palmerston North will assist with administration, venue, promotion, networks, and sponsorship. More specifically the two host partners will provide the following:

Massey University to provide a project or opportunity for the artist to work with students; to nominate a mentor(s) to be the primary contact person for the artist(s); to provide access to an office at the University as a working space for the artist; to assist the artist with promotional support at Massey University; to nominate a contact person at the University to represent the University in all matters pertaining to the Scheme. Community Arts Palmerston North to provide accommodation for the artist(s) within Square Edge building inclusive of free power and phone. To nominate a support person to be the primary contact person for the artist(s); to provide exhibition or classroom space if available for the artist to work with the public as per the conditions of the scheme; to assist the artist with promotional support within the City; to nominate a contact person at Square Edge to represent Square Edge in all matters pertaining to the Scheme. SELECTION AND SUPERVISION Artists will be invited to apply for residencies by Massey University s Arts Committee. The Arts Committee will nominate a leading mentor to work with the successful artist. This mentor will work to integrate the artist into the environment at Massey and to provide opportunities to the artist to work on collaborative projects with students and/ or staff, and thus fulfil the requirements of the residency. The contact person for accommodation purposes will be the Square Edge Manager. The Community Arts Palmerston North manager and the Square Edge manager will ensure the artist is integrated into the Palmerston North Community Arts centre environment. The managers will also provide assistance to the artist to ensure the requirements of delivering one public programme to the arts community in the City is fulfilled. HOST PARTNERS These residencies are offered by Massey University and Community Arts Palmerston North and Square Edge in conjunction with the Palmerston North City Council.

It is made up of two locations split by the Manawatu River: Turitea across the river from the city (where the colleges of Business, Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences are located) and Hokowhitu on the city-side, where the Massey University College of Education is sited. Community Arts Palmerston North Community Arts Palmerston North aims to foster the growth in all art forms in Palmerston North; supporting emergent artists through the provision of space, promotional activities, and business opportunities. At the heart of emergent art in Palmerston North, Community Arts Palmerston North is located in the Square Edge building in the City Centre, within a stone s throw from several of the City s cultural jewels, including the impressive Regent on Broadway, Te Manawa (Life Art and Mind Galleries), the architecturally designed City Library, the community focused Globe Theatre, and The Stomach, the City s community recording facility. Palmerston North Community Arts Council has had a long history of promoting the arts in Palmerston North, having been established as an arts centre namely Community Arts Palmerston North in 1981 in the recently vacated Civic Buildings. Over the years Community Arts Palmerston North has fostered, and, launched many art, craft, and related businesses. Positioned as an arts incubator, Community Arts Palmerston North and the Square Edge Management provides studio, retail, rehearsal and performance spaces, and facilitates networks and promotional activities to create synergies and build the profile of individual contributors - through the profile of the centre itself.

Community Arts Palmerston North s mix of services reflects the mix of emergent artists in the City including community artists and students exiting our tertiary arts providers, and the professional level arts and culture facilities and arts retailers within the City - providing the much needed link between the two. Palmerston North Situated on the banks of the Manawatu River nestled at the foot of the impressive Tararua Mountain Range, a growing city of 78,000, Palmerston North has been able to maintain a complementary relationship between the modern conveniences and technology of big city life, and the quality and ease of small town lifestyle.
