COOKING FUEL 5 COOKING FUEL AND LIGHTING 5.1. INTRODUCTION This chapter fcuses n the type f cking fuel and surces f lighting used by husehlds in the state. The analysis is dne by cmparisns made with the cuntry, empwered actin grup (EAG) states, neighburing states and within the state in divisins and districts. derives the bulk f its cking energy needs frm slid fuels, such as firewd, crp residue and cw dung cake. In cntrast, ecnmically develped cuntries, such as the USA, UK, Italy, Denmark and thers use cleaner cking fuels. als displays a striking ruralurban dichtmy in its chice f cking fuels. An verwhelming majrity - abut 8 percent f rural hmes in - cntinue t use bimass - firewd, crp residue r cw dung - as their primary cking fuel. 5.2. HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF FUEL USED FOR COOKING This sectin prvides an verview f the husehlds by the type f fuel used in and Madhya fr 1 and 11. The analysis f census data fr 11 has been made fr ten categries f husehlds classified by type f fuel used. These are firewd, crp residue, cwdung cake, cal/ lignite/charcal, kersene, LPG/PNG, electricity, bigas, any ther and n cking. 5.2.1. and Madhya This sectin prvides an verview f the husehlds classified by the type f fuel used fr cking in and Madhya fr 1 and 11. The natin s figures fr Census 1 and 11 shws that the mst significant increase in abslute number in LPG/PNG is at 19.6 percent fllwed by figures fr n cking with 26.5 percent. As per Census 11, use f firewd fr cking purpses by husehlds is highest at 49. percent fllwed by LPG/PNG ccupying a percentage share f 28.5 percent in the cuntry. A cmparisn f the abslute change in terms f cking fuel used by husehlds in Madhya, the highest increase is recrded by LPG/PNG at 83.1 percent fllwed by firewd with 4.8 percent. The maximum percentage share is ccupied by firewd with 66.4 percent fllwed by LPG/PNG with 18.2 percent fr 11. As per 11 natinal figures, the highest percentage share fr rural husehlds is ccupied by firewd at 62.5 percent fllwed by crp residue at 12.3 percent and LPG/PNG with 11.4 percent. Madhya has recrded the maximum increase (1-11) in rural husehlds fr LPG/PNG at 121.4 percent fllwed by firewd with 41.9 percent fr cking fuel. As per 11 figures, in rural Madhya highest percentage share is ccupied by firewd at a significant 78.6 percent fllwed by cwdung cake with 9.9 percent. 332

Of these, percentage share f firewd, LPG/PNG and crp residue is seen in highest prprtin fr ttal and rural areas. In urban areas, the highest use f cking fuel is firewd, LPG/PNG and kersene. The use f firewd as cking fuel at all level is 49. percent while the share fr EAG states ranges frm 34.7 t 8.8 percent; where Madhya ranks secnd at 66.4 percent. In the cntext f LPG/ PNG, the all figure is 28.5 percent with the EAG states ranging frm 8.1 t 44.2 percent; where Madhya is in furth psitin at 18.2 percent. With regard t crp residue as cking fuel, the natinal percentage share is 8.9 percent while the EAG percentage share ranges frm.9 t 32.5 percent; where Madhya ranks fifth at 5.6 percent. In the rural areas, the percentage share f firewd used fr cking fuel fr is 62.5 percent while the share in EAG states ranges frm 35.5 t 92.1 percent; where rural Madhya ranks secnd with 78.6 percent. Use f LPG/PNG in rural is 11.4 percent with the EAG states ranging frm 1.6 t 29.4 percent; where rural Madhya stands furth at 3.5 percent. With regard t crp residue as cking fuel, the state figure is 5.6 percent where the divisinal share ranges frm 1. t 21.6 percent; with least dependence n crp residue in Shahdl and maximum dependence in Chambal. At the district level, husehlds shw maximum dependence n firewd, LPG/PNG and cwdung cake as type f cking fuel. Districts which rely the mst n firewd as main surce f cking fuel include Dindri (94.8%), Mandla(9.8%) and Balaghat(9.6%) while lw ranking districts include Indre (18.7%), Bhpal (27.%) and Gwalir(3.%). With regard t LPG/PNG, Indre (67.8%), Bhpal (57.7%) and Gwalir (44.7%) shw maximum dependence while least is registered in Dindri(2.7%), Sidhi (4.%) and Panna (5.7%). Rewa (36.2%), Datia (32.3%) and Ashknagar (28.6%) rely the mst n cwdung cake fr the purpse f cking fuel whereas Harda and Balaghat at (.1 percent), and Burhanpur (.2%) depends the least. In rural Madhya, the dependence n firewd fr the purpse f cking fuel is 78.6 percent while the share f the divisins ranges frm 57. t 95.7 percent; Chambal at the minimum and Shahdl at the maximum.
