Scholarships What are Scholarships? Scholarships are defined as monetary awards for education. We all know that scholarships are generally given to over-achievers or leaders in various fields of academics, arts, sports or on a needs basis. The award can range from a few hundred ringgit to the entire cost of your education - and even includes living allowance. However, it is important to note that scholarships are not free money. Most organisations who offer scholarships do so because they want to invest in your lives. Some would expect you to develop a career in specific disciplines, for example, oil and gas, at their companies. Some will expect the scholars to contribute in terms of serving the community or being ambassadors for the organisation. Sports scholarships are mostly offered to athletes who have the ability to shine and play at highly competitive sports events to represent the learning institution. In Malaysia, most scholarships are awarded by higher learning institutions, government and non-government organisations, corporations and independent foundations. In almost all cases, scholarships are not given automatically, so you will need to submit an application and go through a selection process. You will be competing with hundreds, if not thousands, of other hopeful applicants, so it is important that you put a lot of thought into the application process and go prepared for your interview. Therefore, take some time to do research on the various types of scholarships, get advice from people who have walked that path (and this is where social media is really handy) and be sure to create as many achievements as possible while you are still in school. You might just obtain the scholarship you have been aiming for, along with other amazing benefits to get started on achieving your dream career. This booklet will guide you on how the application process works, plus tips for securing a scholarship. We have also included a list of scholarships available, so that you can get started. All the best! How to Write a Scholarship Essay? Scholarship essays are requested by the scholarship board to access you on your knowledge. Questions can vary from the simplest tell us about yourself to a scenario about saving the country on a certain issue. Before writing your scholarship essay, read the instructions and make sure you understand the goal of this essay. Know your target audience, plan your points, and write them down. Make your essay personal and interesting so that the scholarship board is able to connect with you, and is aware that you are truly serious in obtaining that scholarship. Be sure to keep it short and concise - about 5 or 6 main points is enough, and elaborate on those points. You can score bonus points by including how you can give back to the organisation if you were granted the scholarship. Also, ensure there is sufficient space for you to include your list of talents and accomplishments so that you can share how you can be nurtured to be one of the organisation s employees or be a benefit to the community. The important thing is, write the essay in simple language and of course, ensure that there are no grammar and spelling errors! Definitely get it proof-read before submitting the essay. 1

Résumé Writing a. Format your résumé wisely Draft out your résumé before writing. Ensure the flow is smooth and tells a great story about you. b. Identify your accomplishments Be sure to impress them with your best academic and sports or community achievements! Any achievements from your school days are important to dazzle them with how talented you are. Define your roles and goals along the way to show you are a person with big ambitions. c. Personalise your résumé Do not just use the same résumé when applying to various scholarships. It is good to tweak your résumé specifically for the organisation. It is also good to include a letter of recommendation or a reference letter by a significant person in your life, like a sports coach, social club leader or a religious leader. d. Write from your heart! Highlight your strengths, but yet write from your heart. Everyone s résumé will be different, therefore don t compare and don t be afraid. Be natural with your writing, but ensure it is also within the professional scope no SMS language or urban English words such as psyched, stoked, or even swag, please! You can also include your best photo that was taken professionally. e. Simple English and no room for errors A résumé should be simple and presented clearly. Stick to simple English and short sentences. Check your résumé numerous times before submitting, for spelling errors. You should also get a good friend or mentor to proof-read this for you. How to get Recommendations or Referrals For the final lap of your scholarship application, you need to attach a referral letter from someone prominent in your school or someone significant within your social group. It is an important touch to your scholarship application for the scholarship board to know you better as an individual. Recommendations can be from your school teacher, headmaster or even a sports coach who knows you and has been with you for a significant period and also knows your qualities and supports your achievements. These recommendations are to help make your application stand out. When requesting your referee to write for you, do give them enough time to do so as well as provide them with supporting documents like your résumé, the application form and a short paragraph of your achievements. Your referee also needs to know the deadline of the application. You would have to check if the recommendation letter needs to be submitted by you or by your referee directly to the scholarship board you are applying for. Good Luck! Be proud of your achievements! 2

Preparing for a Scholarship Interview If you are invited for a scholarship interview, congratulations. It means that your résumé has been well received and they want to meet you. Here are 4 tips to impress in an interview 1) Relax and be yourself! Just give it your best shot and be confident. 2) Keep your answer straight to the point and be concise Prior to the interview, practice with an experienced adult (with several years of working experience). 3) Be approachable Make an impression during the interview that the organisation will benefit greatly with you on board. Don t give up if the questions get tricky. 4) Dress, look and act like a professional Look your best and remind yourself you are the best. Friendly reminders Before the interview, review your application materials thoroughly. Bring your original documents and also photocopies of documents you have submitted to support your scholarship application. Prepare mentally and emotionally for demanding and challenging questions. Read up on the organisation prior to the interview to see how you can give back to them as a future employee. During the interview, take your time to respond and don t ramble while answering the questions. Take the opportunity to meet fellow interviewees you might be working with them in the future! 10 examples of frequently asked interview questions: Tell me about yourself, your background and interests. How did you come to be the person you are today? What is your biggest weakness? What do you do for fun? What do you do in your spare time? Share a story that illustrate your strengths or weaknesses. Give an example of a time you ve been thrown into a new, uncomfortable situation. Why was it uncomfortable? Were you able to be successful in that experience? If yes, what did you do to ensure your success? If no, why not? What do you imagine yourself doing in 10 years? What makes you an ideal candidate for this opportunity? What do you hope to learn from this experience? Who is your role model? What is your proudest moment? 4

What to Wear for the Interview Women Choose business clothes that fit and flatter your body type. Keep your hair neat and styled. A disheveled look will hurt your chances for the scholarship. Wear daytime make up - not too heavy and definitely no glitter. Lipstick is optional but if you want to wear it, choose natural colours. Keep fragrances to a minimum as well. Jewelry and accessories can help but remember to keep it minimal, too. This is a scholarship interview, so you need to shine and not your attire. Men Select a simple crisp business shirt, a matching tie, a pair of shoes and pants that can make you look and feel good. Because of our Malaysian weather, wearing a jacket may make you uncomfortable, which will be an unwelcomed addition to your stress. Alternatively, you can bring the jacket along and wear it moments before the interview. Generally, most interviewers are understanding and would not expect you to wear a jacket. Make sure you look professional and not sluggish ensure your shirt is crease-free! No piercings and be clean shaven. Clean nails, teeth and no bad breath. Finally Be early. Arrive at the venue at least 20 minutes in advance to give yourself time to freshen up at the restroom and you will not have added stress because you were rushing for time. Be polite to everyone you meet. The interviewers can gauge someone by how that person treats people, including the receptionist and the cleaner. Financial Loans What are Financial Loans? Financial loans are money, property or other material goods borrowed in exchange for future repayment of the principal amount, along with interest or other finance charges. In Malaysia, financial study loans are given out to students who would like to further their education be it locally or overseas. Examples of organisations that have these loans are PTPTN, MCA/MIEC, Kuok Foundation and Kojadi Education. Financial loans come with very minimal requirements generally, you have be a Malaysian citizen, at a certain age and have earned a certain qualification. They also have very minimal interest rates, like PTPTN is only 1% and once you start work, the loan can be repaid gradually. All the necessary information can be found from the respective websites. Do I need a Guarantor? The application process for these loans can be a little sticky and tedious but it s for all the right reasons, as your lender needs to be assured that the loan will be repaid at the end of your education period. For this reason, you need a guarantor. The best guarantors are your parents. Don t be concerned if your parents face financial difficulties, or are no longer around because leeway is given to special cases. They will be asked to provide their personal information, as well as their financial statements to justify why that you need a loan. Can I convert a loan to a scholarship? Yes, you read it right! A loan can be waived or converted to a scholarship if you can meet certain targets or requirements set by the organisation. However, before signing up for a loan agreement, be sure to read the fine prints. An example of a loan converting to a scholarship would be the PTPTN. If you have graduated with first class honours, you will not have to pay back your loan! Of course, there are terms and conditions applied you can check out http://www.ptptn.gov.my/web/english/faq-english/repayment/exemption for more information. List of Financial Loans 1.
