1 UNIVERSITY OF DAR ES SALAAM OFFICE OF THE DEPUTY VICE CHANCELLOR (ACADEMIC) INVITATION TO APPLY FOR ADMISSION INTO UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMMES FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2011/2012 FOR APPLICANTS WITH EQUIVALENT QUALIFICATIONS The University of Dar es Salaam Main Campus College of Information and Communication Technologies (CoICT) School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE) Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE) Applications are invited from qualified candidates with equivalent qualification (i.e. those with Diplomas) wishing to pursue various undergraduate degree programmes at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) for the academic year 2011/2012. Once admitted into the University, successful Tanzanian applicants may be eligible for loans from the Higher Education Students Loans Board (HESLB). Applicants with direct qualifications, i.e. those who have completed A-level secondary education (Form VI), will have to apply through the Central Admission System (CAS) as advertised by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU). 1. Minimum Entrance Requirements 1

2 A candidate shall be deemed eligible for consideration for admission to an undergraduate degree programme of the University if the candidate has obtained: (a) Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E.) or equivalent, with passes in FIVE approved subjects THREE of which must be at credit level, obtained prior to sitting for the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E.) or equivalent; And (b) An appropriate equivalent Diploma of not less than Second class/credit level or B average obtained from a college which is fully registered by NACTE and approved by the UDSM Senate. For Diplomas that are further classified into Upper and Lower Second classes, the requirement shall be an Upper Second class or B+ average. Holders of diplomas obtained from foreign countries need to attach a letter from the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) indicating the equivalency of the obtained diploma results to Tanzania ones. 2. Programmes and Additional Requirements by Colleges/Schools Main Campus 2.1 College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) The College offers 12 Bachelor of Arts degree programmes. They are clustered under three programmes: Programme 1: Culture and Heritage (3 years) B.A. in Archaeology B.A. in Heritage Management B.A. in Fine and Performing Arts 2

3 B.A. in Language Studies B.A. in Literature B.A. in History Programme 2: Social Sciences (3 years) B.A. in Economics B.A. in Geography and Environmental Studies B.A. in Political Science and Public Administration B.A. in Sociology B.A. in Statistics An appropriate Diploma, recognised by the UDSM Senate, of not less than Second class or Credit standing. Programme 3: Education (3 years) Bachelor of Arts with Education At least 2 nd Class or B average Diploma in either Teacher Education or Adult Education with 'B+' (or 60% marks) average in two teaching subjects. Passes in Teaching Methodology courses will not be considered. 2.2 University of Dar es Salaam Business School (UBDS) Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting (3 years) Bachelor of Commerce in Banking and Financial Services (3 years) Bachelor of Commerce in Finance (3 years) Bachelor of Commerce in Human Resources Management (3 years) Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing (3 years) Bachelor of Commerce in Tourism and Hospitality Management (3 years) 3

4 (a) (b) Ordinary Diploma of not less than Second class standing, approved by the UDSM Senate. The grade in Statistics, Mathematics or Quantitative Methods in the Diploma should be 'C' or better or at least a C in Mathematics at C.S.E.E. No classification is required for Advanced Diploma. The grade in Statistics, Quantitative Methods or Business Mathematics in the Advanced Diploma should be 'C' or better or a grade of 'C' or better in Mathematics at C.S.E.E. 2.3 UDSM School of Education (UDSE) Bachelor of Education (Adult and Community Education) (3 years) Bachelor of Education (Psychology) (3 years) Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) (3 years) An appropriate equivalent Diploma in Education with an overall grade of 'B' OR possession of an Adult Education Diploma from the Institute of Adult Education, Dar es Salaam or Agency for the Development of Educational Management (ADEM) Institute, Bagamoyo with passes at an overall grade of 'B+' or better. Passes in Teaching Methodology courses will not be considered. Bachelor of Education (Physical Education and Sport Sciences) (3 years) A Diploma in Physical Education or in Education with a minimum overall grade of 'B' as well as a Credit pass in Biology at C.S.E.E. Candidates should pass a physical fitness test administered by the Department of Physical Education, Sport and Culture of the University of Dar es Salaam. 4

5 Bachelor of Education (Commerce) (3 years) A relevant Diploma approved by the UDSM Senate with at least a 'B' grade average and a Credit pass in Mathematics at C.S.E.E. Passes in Teaching Methodology courses will not be considered. 2.4 UDSM School of Law (UDSL) Bachelor of Laws (4 Years) An appropriate Diploma obtained in not less than two years of study from an accredited/recognised institution of higher learning of not less than Second Class and approved by the UDSM Senate. Or A Certificate in Law of the University of Dar es Salaam passed with distinction. Or A Bachelors degree from a recognised University in a discipline other than Law with the exception of Bachelor of Divinity or Islamic Studies. NB: On completion of the 4 years at UDSM students are required to proceed to internship or any other practical training programs Government may have put in place for law graduates. Bachelor of Arts in Law Enforcement (3 Years) A Diploma relevant to the law enforcement discipline of not less than Second Class obtained from an accredited/recognised law enforcement institution and approved by the UDSM Senate. Or A Certificate in Law of the University of Dar es Salaam passed with distinction. 5

6 2.5 Institute of Kiswahili Research (IKR) The Institute of Kiswahili Research offers the following undergraduate degree programme: Bachelor of Arts in Kiswahili (3 years) An appropriate equivalent Diploma approved by the UDSM Senate with an average grade of 'B' or higher. 2.6 College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CoNAS) The College of Natural and Applied Sciences offers the following undergraduate degree programmes: Bachelor of Science (General) (3 years) Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (3 years) Bachelor of Science in Aquatic Environmental Science and Conservation (3 years) Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Sciences (3 years) Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Aquaculture (3 years) Bachelor of Science in Applied Zoology (3 years) Bachelor of Science in Botanical Sciences (3 years) Bachelor of Science in Microbiology (3 years) Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (3 years) Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Science and Conservation (3 years) Bachelor of Science in Geology (4 years) Bachelor of Science in Engineering Geology (4 years) Bachelor of Science with Geology (4 years) 6

Passes in Teaching Methodology Courses will not be considered. 3. Fees Structure Selected candidates will be required to pay tuition and other University fees by the beginning of the 9

Such requirements may be in the form of boots, overalls, compass set, drawing board, track suits, gloves, masks etc. as well as funds for industrial/practical training or teaching practice depending on the programme. Applicants are urged to consult the latest University prospectus for specific requirements by their Colleges/Schools or consult the Colleges/Schools that they intend to apply for more details, including indicative cost implication. 12 Note: Application forms and Instructions to Applicants can also be obtained at the offices of the Regional Education Officers or be downloaded from the University Website: Applicants must: (i) (ii) Carefully read the accompanying Instructions to Applicants before attempting to fill the application forms. Give full particulars of citizenship (including a copy of the birth certificate) and enclosing photocopies of O Level and equivalent qualifications (diploma) Certificates. Applicants with diploma qualifications obtained outside the country must submit a translation by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) indicating equivalent grades to Tanzanian ones. This is in addition to submission of the original grades. (iii) Pay a non-refundable application fee of TZS 20,000/= for Tanzanians and USD 45 for non-tanzanians. Applications without the required application fee will not be processed. Applicants must ascertain themselves that they possess the minimum entrance qualifications before they pay the fees as the fees will not be refunded under any circumstances. (iv) Deposit all fees into the University of Dar es Salaam NBC Bank Account number (UDSM branch) or CRDB Bank Account number 01J (UDSM branch) and submit the original pay-in slip together with the application forms. For those using telegraphic transfer, the Swift Code is NLCBTZTX for NBC Bank and CORUTZTZ for CRDB Bank. (v) Avoid choosing competitive programmes in all their 3 degree choices if they want to enhance their chance of admission. In the previous years, programmes in the following areas required very high grades to get admitted into: Law, Political Science, Sociology, Geography and Environmental Studies, Economics, Public Relations, Mass Communication, Commerce, Computer Engineering and Information Technology, Computer Science, Electronic Science and Communication, and Telecommunication Engineering. 12

13 (vi) (vii) (viii) (ix) All in all, there are very few chances reserved for applicants with equivalent qualifications which will be awarded on merit. Differentiate between Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) programmes on one hand and Bachelor of Arts with Education (B.A. Ed.) and Bachelor of Science with Education (B.Sc. Ed.) on the other. There will be more admissions into the latter two programmes which are aimed at training secondary school teachers. Make sure that the Diplomas in Education they intend to use to get admitted into the University have actual subjects with titles similar to subjects taught in secondary schools. Since Teaching Methodology subjects are not relevant, most Diplomas in Education obtained after 2001 will therefore not meet the University minimum entrance qualifications. Carefully select the Colleges if they want to increase their chances of admission. It should therefore not be surprising if an applicant for B.A. Education programme is not selected to join the College of Arts and Social Sciences while the same applicant could have been selected to join the same programme at Dar es Salaam or Mkwawa University College of Education. The number of applicants in each College will influence the cut-off points for admission into the respective colleges. Understand that they will be selected to join the University based on their qualifications only. Selected applicants will thereafter have to seek loans from HESLB on their own or decide to pay the fees privately. Deadline for receiving application forms is strictly at 4 p.m. on Friday 27 th May, NB: *WARNING* It is an offence to submit false information when applying for admission. Applicants who will be discovered to have submitted a forged certificate or any other false information will not be considered and appropriate legal action will be taken against them. Bonafide University students are cautioned not to attempt applying for admission. If such students submit their application they will be liable to deregistration. Likewise, former students who have 13
