INSTALLING AND USING ENTEL PROGRAMMER IN WINDOWS 7 Rev 1.1 Technical Support Bulletin 1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Due to the structural changes in Windows 7 compared to previous Windows versions the following issues can be experienced whilst installing and using Entel Programmer: Not being able to update the programmer USB driver problems Error messages A scenario where Entel Programmer has been successfully installed but restarts continuously in a loop. This document covers the following topics: Installing Entel Programmer Installing the USB driver Compatibility Mode Troubleshooting Compatibility mode must be enabled before Entel Programmer is first opened with Windows 7 to avoid problems. 2 INSTALLING ENTEL PROGRAMMER: The programming software must be installed using an account with Administrator privileges. Download the Entel Programmer installer package from: http://www.entel.co.uk/updates/, unzip the folder and double click on the Setup.exe file. The wizard will open and allow a few options to be customised before installing the programmer. In the install directory screen it is recommended to use the default install location and select the option to install for Everyone which ensures all accounts using the PC can access the programmer. When the installation of Entel Programmer is complete the wizard will offer a prompt to install the USB driver, if the USB driver is required go to step 3, otherwise go to step 4 if an Entel USB programming lead or USB adaptor are not being used. 3 INSTALLING THE USB DRIVER: This step is only essential when using Entel USB programming cables or serial to USB adapter leads. If only a serial port and serial programming cable are being used then installing the USB driver is not required. If Entel programmer has been installed previously without the correct USB driver, then it can be downloaded from the Entel website which is available at: http://www.entel.co.uk/updates/ When the USB wizard starts just click on Next and the wizard will install the USB driver automatically. 4 COMPATIBILITY MODE: Windows 7 can have issues running some older versions of certain programs. Therefore, Microsoft has implemented a Compatibility mode feature in Windows 7 that allows an older program written for an earlier version of Windows to run in Windows 7. 4.1 Log in as an Administrator. 4.2 Press the Start button and open the Entel Programmer folder application window, by default at; Start > All Programs > Entel Programmer autoupdate. 4.3 Right click Entel Programmer or Entel Programmer autoupdate and click Properties. 4.4 When the Properties window is open, click the Compatibility tab. 4.5 In the Compatibility mode section, click the checkbox to enable Run this program in compatibility mode for: 4.6 Then click the drop down box and select the version of Windows that Entel Programmer worked in previously. 4.7 Once that is done, click OK button and run Entel Programmer. Please note when the setting above is applied, Windows will always prompt a User Account Control (UAC) warning message. 5 TROUBLESHOOTING: This section outlines some of the possible error messages, their causes and how to resolve the issues. 5.1 Unable to connect to Entel Database server. A connection to the internet is unavailable. To resolve this problem, establish an open internet connection. This error message is caused by a lack of connection to the internet. Establish that the PC has an active internet connection and the correct firewall permissions (if relevant), then try again by either restarting the programmer, or closing the error message, then go to the About menu and select Update / Show Version Info. 5.2 The error message below occurs if a connection to the internet was lost once a process had begun. The picture of the left indicates that the internet connection was lost after the About / Show Version Info function was selected, but before the PC could finish downloading the list of software the connection was lost. The picture on the right is displayed if the Add / Remove Models button was clicked on the Update screen but the connection to the internet was lost before the list had finished compiling. 5.3 There are three main reasons for the following error message: Either Entel Programmer is not being run in Compatibility Mode in which case go to Step 4 More than one version of Entel Programmer is open. If so close all but one copy of Entel Programmer. The Internet connection has been lost during the downloading process. Finally the Internet connection may have been lost while attempting to update files, see section 5.1. 5.4 This message indicates the USB driver is not installed properly when the USB adapter or lead is connected. Alternatively the driver is incompatible with Windows 7. Download the latest USB driver from the Entel website that supports the Windows 7 Operating System, see section 3. It is recommended to remove the previous driver first. Entel is only able to provide support for Entel programming equipment and adaptors. 5.5 This error message is caused when a Read/Write operation is attempted but the driver is either not properly installed or the driver is incompatible. The USB driver should be uninstalled and the correct driver installed in its place. 5.6 This message can appear during driver installation. If it appears, remove the previously installed driver as it might have become corrupted, then re install the driver. Page: 8 / 10 Copyright Entel UK 2012 All Rights Reserved REF: ED023
5.7 There are two reasons for the registration message to be displayed everytime the programmer is started. Selecting Yes will ensure that codeplug save files (.entel) are correctly associated to the programmer and that double clicking on a.entel file will open it within Entel Programmer; If compatibility mode has not been enabled correctly by an admistrator, it is possible to see the registration message appear on startup everytime, when it should only appear if the programmer has not previously been registered. Ensure compatibility mode has been correctly set as per step 4 by an account with administrator level permissions. Alternatively if another version of Entel Programmer is installed to a separate directory location on the computer and has been set as Registered then the registration message will reset on all other copies of Entel Programmer. Only one copy of Entel Programmer may be registered at one time. This will only affect users who have installed multiple Entel programmers to different locations. 5.8 If Entel Programmer has just been installed, a situation can occur where the programmer seems to be stuck in a continuous loop of looking for updates on startup, failing to download, then restarting. This is because the Enable Live Update is selected but the programmer is not running in compatibility mode, so liveupdate will start as soon as the programmer is run for the first time, not be allowed to download the updates, and then restart Entel Programmer in the hope of resolving the issue. To stop this loop, when Entel programmer starts, unselect the Enable auto update option. Then close the programmer and change the programmer to start in compatibility mode as per step 4.
