Senior Technician (Managerially) (Training and Development) 2. Senior Pharmacist or Senior Technician in each section (Reporting) 3. Clinical Director of Pharmacy (Professionally) JOB PURPOSE To undertake training in NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills supported by BTEC National Certificate in Pharmacy Services in order to develop the skills and knowledge in all areas of hospital pharmacy practice required to become a registered Pharmacy Technician. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Core To take part in the maintenance of efficient stock control including carrying out stock checks, storage and expiry checks as required, both in departments and on the wards.
To participate in the ordering, distribution and disposal of all items used within each section of pharmacy. To compile an e portfolio and undertake training which meets the requirements of NVQ level 3 Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills. To attend an appropriate College to undertake the BTEC Pharmacy Services course and to maintain satisfactory progress on the course. To participate in local training initiatives developed for pharmacy technicians and student pharmacy technicians. To contribute to the provision of the pharmaceutical service. To participate in staff performance and appraisal schemes. To participate in staff rotas to ensure maintenance of pharmaceutical services including weekends and bank holidays. Dispensary / Ward To undertake dispensary duties including receiving, validating and dispensing medicines for in-patients, day patients and out patients and under supervision to issue those drugs, counselling patients as appropriate. To dispense clinical trial supplies under supervision. To be involved in the ward based medicines management services. Stores/Procurement To participate in the issue of stock to the wards and departments within the UHB. To undertake purchasing and store keeping duties under supervision, sourcing supplies from internal and external suppliers and maintaining documentation. To monitor and audit stock control and purchasing processes using Information Technology. Technical Services To participate in the aseptic compounding of parenteral nutrition, cytotoxics and specials and assist in the provision of a central intravenous additive (CIVA) service. To participate in the day to day operational aspects of the service with appropriate pharmacy staff. To carry out quality assurance procedures such as environmental monitoring and routine cleaning of restricted areas. To prepare cardiac arrest drug boxes and other emergency packs. Recording details of these appropriate to departmental systems. To prepare extemporaneous medicines under direct supervision, using precise weighing and measuring techniques and completing all appropriate documentation. To prepare non-sterile products for stock. To manufacture and pack bulk batches under supervision. To undertake the pre-packing of pharmaceutical products.

There are hazards posed by raw materials (including cytotoxic drugs which are carcinogenic and teratogenic) and machinery used during manufacturing processes. Employees are required to cooperate with management including following standard operating procedures, use appropriate safety equipment and to report any hazardous situations or defective equipment. This will enable the UHB to meet its own legal duties.
