Graduate Profile - Sam Taylor Degree - BEng (Hons) Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering University - Strathclyde University Graduate Intake - 2008 Current Role - Senior Commercial Engineer I joined DeepOcean in 2008 straight from having completed my degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Strathclyde University. The opportunity to work abroad was a definite draw to join DeepOcean and I was able to do so within my first year with the Company, supporting operations in the Asia Pacific region. Mobilising a cable installation spread in Singapore is one of my lasting memories at DeepOcean so far and I have had many opportunities to work abroad since. There are many exciting new developments occurring within the DeepOcean Group in both the oil and gas and renewable industries and with this comes a great opportunity for any new graduate to influence how DeepOcean operates and is seen within these markets. DeepOcean have always encouraged my development and career aspirations and now I am the Senior Commercial Engineer for the company. What advice would you give new graduates? Have an eye on the next part of your career development and understand that if your career goals change then the next move could be to a department more suited to that goal whether its project engineering, project management or something more commercially orientated.
Graduate Profile - Femi Sopekan Degree - MEng Mechanical & Electrical Engineering University - University of Aberdeen Graduate Intake - 2009 Current Role - Project Engineer I joined DeepOcean in 2009 as a Graduate Engineer and I have enjoyed every second of it. As part of the Graduate Programme, you have the opportunity to gain exposure in various areas of the business from assisting in tenders through to offshore project execution. On one occasion I mobilised a Hammer Spread on a vessel in Singapore. DeepOceans operations are global so you could support work anywhere in the world. Following this I supported our Asset Team working with ROVs and a 2000te Carousel. I really enjoyed my time in Project Engineering supporting a number of interesting ploughing projects and jet trenching projects. The opportunity to see offshore operations first hand was invaluable. This is where you really learn and understand DeepOcean operations. How would you describe the Company to new graduates? DeepOcean has a fun and dynamic work environment where you have experienced friendly professionals with a can-do attitude. As a graduate you will be provided with all the tools essential to your growth including a support structure of ex-graduates and experienced personnel. You will have the opportunity to take on a number of challenging roles though department secondments to develop both technically and personally within interesting, diverse and challenging projects. You get responsibility from Day 1 which gives you the satisfaction of contributing positively to a fantastic Company. 25
Graduate Profile - Neil Polson Degree - BEng (Hons) Computer Aided Engineering University - Northumbria University Graduate Intake - 2008 Current Role - Project Engineer Since joining the company back in 2008 I have worked on many projects, both onshore in the Darlington office and Tees Offshore Base, and offshore on various vessels. From the very first week I have been actively involved in the many different aspects of offshore installation work from planning to execution. I have gained experience throughout my time with DeepOcean and look forward to many further years with the company. The nature of the work means that every day can provide new challenges, with the work being varied and of great interest. The people at DeepOcean look to the graduates as the next generation of talent, and offer the opportunities other companies can only dream of. What advice would you give new graduates? Putting in the effort reaps rewards in this business. Actively seek challenges in the work place wherever you can, and better yourself at every opportunity. It was a DeepOcean employee who taught me the true value of stepping outside of my comfort zone to expand my own abilities, and this has proven a valuable lesson on many occasions.
Graduate Profile - Charlie Pearcy Degree - MEng Civil with Environmental Engineering University - Nottingham University Graduate Intake - 2012 Current Role - Graduate Project Engineer Following the completion of my Civil Engineering Degree, I decided to take a Gap year in which I worked and went backpacking around the world. I joined DeepOcean in 2012 and have found that my civil engineering background is well suited to the type of work DeepOcean is involved in, having focussed on fluids, hydraulics and geotechnics within my degree. When I first joined the DeepOcean, I spent 3 months as a Commercial Support Engineer, offering technical support to the commercial team during the tendering process. The job involved working closely with colleagues from a number of departments on a variety of different projects meaning that every day offered something new to work on. I am currently working as part of a Project Team coming into the final stages of planning a project to install a network of seismic monitoring cables on an oil field off the coast of Norway. A project engineer s role also involves spending time offshore making sure that the project procedures are followed safely and efficiently, a part of the role that I am particularly looking forward to. How would you describe our scheme to prospective graduates? Departmental rotations is one of the advantages of DeepOcean s graduate scheme as it offers graduates the chance to find which departments they are most suited to whilst also providing a broad knowledge base of how various departments work. 27
Graduate Profile - Joe Stanwix Degree - MEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering with Design University - Newcastle University Graduate Intake - 2008 Current Role - Structural Engineer I wanted to join a company where I could work with big pieces of equipment and there aren t many machines bigger than the 200Te rock trencher T-3200 I was working with within my first few months Other highlights as a Graduate Engineer include mobilising cable lay equipment on a vessel in Singapore and gaining valuable offshore experience supporting a wind farm export cable installation. On completion of the Graduate Scheme I chose to be a Structural Engineer and have since become DeepOcena s dynamic analysis specialist. My main responsibility is to use computer software to model all our offshore operations before they are actually executed to ensure no cables or pipelines are damaged in the process. How would you describe the company to future graduates? DeepOcean is a company that allows Graduate Engineers to gain a wide range of experience and knowledge within the subsea industry from the moment you join. There are also many opportunities to travel, in fact I m in Haugesund, Norway as I type this now! It is often difficult to choose the exact engineering role you want to do after leaving university but DeepOcean allows graduates to sample a range of departments first hand before making this decision. When I first joined the company I thought the last place I would end up was as a Structural Engineer!
Graduate Profile - Martin Stobbs Degree - MSc Applied Marine Geoscience University - University of Wales, Bangor Graduate Intake - 2006 Current Role - Lead Geotechnical Engineer I joined DeepOcean in 2006 as a Graduate Geotechnical Engineer immediately following completion of my MSc in Applied Marine Geoscience at Bangor University. I have actively been involved in a number of areas within the business including Commercial Support, Project Support and the development of new trenching solutions. The range of projects that DeepOcean actively tender for, such as oil and gas and renewables, means that each tender and project is different and poses an number of challenging but intriguing issues. I feel the mix of experience and youth at DeepOcean is well balanced and ensures that there is a high knowledge base and innovation within the company. I have been continually supported throughout my time at DeepOcean and now risen to the position of Lead Geotechnical Engineer. How would you describe the Comapny to future graduates? DeepOcean provides a fast-moving and challenging work environment with a varied project portfolio. This allows graduates to participate in a number of different roles/projects to expand their technical knowledge and experiences. As long as you put the hard work in, then graduates will reap the rewards quickly and the company will always provide the necessary support to aid the development of a new graduates career. 29
A Day in the Life of a Project Engineer Noreen Hussain Masters Degree - MEng Advanced Manufacturing Systems Degree - BEng Computer Aided Design & Mechanical Engineering University - University of Teesside Current Role - Project Engineer Since joining DeepOcean, I have completed a number of offshore trips on a windfarm project. Whilst offshore, my main responsibilities were to support the Offshore Manager and be a direct link to the Project Manager onshore to ensure successful project in line with contract and client requirements. A typical day offshore includes a morning project meeting, client interaction ensuring we at DeepOcean are meeting the contractual requirements, dealing with any engineering problems which may arise, raising Management of Change variations, looking after project equipment / rigging, ensuring internal task plans are followed and participating in production of Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment documentation. I enjoy the mix of working onshore and offshore as it provides greater variety. I have gained a lot of experience working offshore and my knowledge of this industry has increased, making me a better engineer and always eager to learn more. I have been given a lot of opportunities at DeepOcean, which has enabled me to learn new skills which will help me reach my goal of becoming a Chartered Engineer.
