The KNX city

KNX city objectives Linking KNX with smart grid and smart city approaches and solutions Communication of benefits to cities which come from KNX solutions Many solutions are already existing, although they don t have smart grid or smart city focuses Pointing out new focuses KNX automates buildings, can connect connect buildings and will also affect cities in future KNX provides solutions for smart grids and interfaces, but never the smart grid itself KNX city focus groups KNX community, urban planner, architects, cities, communities KNX city exhibitions Light & building 2012, Frankfurt Guangzhou international lighting exhibition, Guangzhou, June 2012 Shanghai intelligent building technology, Shanghai, September 2012 TiGiS Taiwan, Oktober 2012 Page No. 6

KNX city Smart cities and smart grids require more than single solutions A Single solution doesn t meet Smart Grid objectives KNX city solutions shall be combined interact with Smart Grid offer interfaces to the grid focus on the total building environment involve all fields which affect living Mobility Smart Grid Systemic approaches who consider the interaction of many fields are necessary KNX classic Generation Page No. 7

KNX has its focus in the building but considers Smart grid and city issues Smart grids require buildings Energy generation affects buildings, e.g. decentralized generation on roofs of buildings. Mobility effects buildings, e.g. charging of electric vehicles The building affects the City, e.g. by feeding in surplus energy into the grid. A systemic solution can be only realized, if many fields interact with each other KNX city sets a new focus with existing KNX technologies Page No. 8

KNX city The KNX city initiative brings mobility, building, infrastructure and energy generation with a single communication together: the KNX communication standard Page No. 9

KNX city panels

Panel objectives Panel Only KNX devices or devices from KNX manufactures are used on it The KNX devices operate with a KNX installation in background No product show. Products are used for symbolizing KNX city solutions Interaction between visitor and panel Visitor can operate something on the panel (e.g. a switch) in order to learn by interaction with the panel Increased learn effect Communication KNX is a part solution, located in the building. The KNX part solution builds together with other part solutions (storages, power grid, etc..) the total solution for making cities green KNX helps to make cities green and focuses on challenges occuring in power grid, such as renewable energies Page No. 11

Panel 1: Generation Page No. 12

Panel 2: Infrastructure Page No. 13

KNX city distributed facilities KNX offers communication by twisted pair, IP and radio frequency Buildings can be connected to each other over distances by IP as if they were one building Distributed facilities Energy management over distances Balancing of generation and consumption of different buildings. Page No. 14

Panel 2: Infrastructure KNX city Air conditioning control Air condition The load can be between 2kW to 4kW, depending from the outside temperature KNX Thermostats can shortly stop cooling or change the cooling temperature in order to reduce the city load Used technologies KNX air condition control KNX city distributed facilities Overload gets stabilized Page No. 15

Panel 3: Communication Page No. 16

Panel 3: Communication What KNX city can do for the Smart Grid and the city Surplus of renewable energies KNX starts loads for consuming the surplus of energy Automatically or manually Tariff controlled by utility KNX helps to buffer renewable energies Lack of renewable energies KNX stops loads for reducing the total city load for a short time KNX helps to cope with the lack of renewable energies Page No. 17

Panel 3: Communication What KNX city can do for the Smart Grid and the city Local overvoltage Results from high generation of decentralized renewable energies KNX increases loads Voltage gets stabilized Peak Load Voltage drops KNX increases loads Voltage gets stabilized Page No. 18

Further panels: KNX Electro Mobility Focus Electric vehicles Home charging Charging with only renewable energies Demand Side Management KNX provides intelligent charging as a part of the building automation Page No. 19

Further panels: KNX Smart Metering Focus power energy heat temperature humidity wind speed volume Smart Metering is the base for a Smart grid Page No. 20

Further panels: KNX Demand Side Management Tariff or Curve is received by a KNX load manager KNX solutions: Demand Side Management Demand Response HVAC automation White goods automation Decentralized energy generation management of e.g. photovoltaic Page No. 21
