SENIOR LIVING Kenmore Apartments LOCATION size Chicago, Illinois 100,000 SF THE STORY A vacated 1920 s era building is transformed into high-quality affordable apartments that redefine senior housing. HIGHLIGHTS AND FEATURES Expected to be first LEED Platinum certified public housing building in Chicago 100 single-bedroom apartments Shared spaces include a library with a fireplace, a multipurpose room, and a fitness center Different colors used on each floor level help seniors find their way seeking LEED platinum certification Interior courtyards have been retrofitted with rain gardens to provide residents a respite from urban living and reduce water pollution Generously-sized operable windows provide ample daylight in each apartment Niches outside of each apartment create opportunities for residents to personalize their space
NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNING Altgeld Town Center LOCATION Chicago, Illinois size 13.4 Acres THE STORY A vision for the Altgeld community, one of the first public housing developments ever built in the United States, was created to enhance the economic and social opportunities for residents. HIGHLIGHTS AND FEATURES Establishes a mixed-use commercial district Plans for future projects that strengthen the integral relationships between the Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Library, Department of Family Support Services, Chicago Police Department Merges services into one community-centered facility that incorporates property management, job training and placement, adult and after-school education, childcare, and counseling services Generates momentum for future retail and commercial investment opportunities
MULTI-FAMILY HOUSING Altgeld Gardens and Murray Homes LOCATION Chicago, Illinois size 144 Acres THE STORY In 2004, Holabird & Root began the rehabilitation of the Chicago Housing Authority s largest development, a 144-acre complex built in the 1940s. HIGHLIGHTS AND FEATURES All existing residential units are expected to be renovated, with some units designed to meet the needs of people with disabilities or limited mobility A multi-phased relocation process allowed 60 percent of homes to remain occupied throughout the project Large sections of glazing in the stand-alone laundry facilities allow for supervision of children Reorganized parking to provide more green spaces for children to play Coordinated with CHA, HUD, and city and state agencies
COMMUNITY CENTER Concordia Place LOCATION Chicago, Illinois size 28,000 SF THE STORY A 1906 church and school were converted into a community center that supports local families and seniors. HIGHLIGHTS AND FEATURES Developed campus to provide an array of outdoor play and gathering spaces within a dense urban setting Classrooms designed for infants through school-age children allowed the Church to expand its highly-respected childcare program Meeting rooms, a senior cafe, and multipurpose areas support tutoring, ESL, and leadership and wellness programs Partnered with the Illinois Historic Preservation Association to preserve public exterior facades, restore original wood windows, and permanently install remaining stained glass windows
