Overdrive Digital Books on Android Devices Overdrive Digital Books on Android Devices provides a collection of ebooks and digital audiobooks through Overdrive: a distributor of digital books to libraries. These instructions will get you started listening to and reading library books on your Android device. Depending on the file format, you can read Overdrive ebooks in the Overdrive Media Console app on your device, or in a web browser. You can also listen MP3 formatted audiobooks from Overdrive on an Android device using the Overdrive Get the App Open Google Play on your device. Overdrive Digital Books on Android Devices Open the App Tap the OverDrive app on your device You will see a tutorial screen on how to get books by either tapping on the OverDrive icon or Swiping the screen from left to right. Add the Library In order to access digital titles available through Pierce County Libraries you need to add the Library to the Get Books list in the Overdrive app. Select the Get Books icon from the app Bookshelf. Tap Add a Library. Search for Pierce County Library. Choose your library from the list of results. Tap the outline of the star to the left of the name of the library. The star will turn yellow, your library is now saved. JP 1/10/15 3
OPEN THE OVERDRIVE CATALOG Return to the Get Books list. Tap on the name of the library you just added. Your device will open the Checkout and Download Tap the Menu icon to browse titles in different categories. Tap the Search icon to search for a particular author or title. JP 1/10/15 4 To view or edit your Overdrive account details and Bookshelf, click on the Account icon.
Icons in the upper right hand corner of a cover image identify whether the title is an audiobook or an ebook. The same icons indicate if the title is currently available for checkout. If the icon for a title is greyed out you must place your name on the waiting list for that particular book. You may limit your search to books that are immediately available for checkout. Click on the orange Show me only titles with copies available button to do so. Clicking on the grey bookmark, just below a title s cover image, will add the book to your wish list. Note that adding a book to your wish list will not place the book on hold for you. Tap a cover image to view more information about a book. Make note of the formats that the book is available in, listed under Available formats. The type of format will determine how you download or access the title on your device. Once you have found a book you wish to check out, tap on Borrow. Enter your library card number and PIN (last 4 digits of your phone number). The book will be added to your Bookshelf. Sometimes a title is checked out by another person and not available at this time. Click on Place a Hold, and submit an email address to be notified when the title becomes available for checkout. Bookshelf On your Account page you can view your Bookshelf, Holds, (Wish) Lists, and Account Settings. The Bookshelf will display all of the books you currently have checked out from Overdrive. Tap the Download button for the title(s) you wish to download. Select a format and hit Confirm & Download. Return to the Overdrive app Bookshelf tap the Menu icon and choose Bookshelf. Tap on a title to start listening or reading! JP 1/10/15 6
Return & Delete You can delete an ebook from the Overdrive app at any time; note that after 21 days (3 weeks) the book may still appear in your library but will be inactive. You can return or delete a title, when your book is open, by If you select Return then Delete tapping the Menu button and selecting Return/Delete. the book will be no longer checked out to you and will be deleted from your device. You can also return or delete a book from the app Bookshelf. Tap the plus sign to the right of If you select Delete Only, the the title. book will be removed from the device, but it will remain checked out to you. JP 1/10/15 7
OverDrive Read Some ebooks from Overdrive are also available in the Read format. Overdrive Read is an in-browser ebook reader. It works just like any ebook reading app, except you don t need to activate or install extra software. From your account Bookshelf, click on Read instead of Download ; the book will open up in your web browser. From your Account Bookshelf, click on Read instead of Download, for the title you wish to open. Overdrive Read will launch a brief navigation tutorial, then open your library book. JP 1/10/15 8
The Read book may initially open in the Overdrive app. To read the book in your internet browser application, tap the settings button and select Open in Browser.
