Operating System Installation Guide This guide provides instructions on the following: Installing the Windows Server 2008 operating systems on page 1 Installing the Windows Small Business Server 2011 operating systems on page 2 Installing device drivers on page 6 Note: Follow the installation instructions provided in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Before the installation You must have the following software and hardware installed on your server for the installation: A license for the operating system to be installed Depending on your server model, an external DVD drive might be required. Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www.lenovo.com/thinkserver/, and then click the Products tab to view the supported options and part numbers for the server. A USB media device containing a RAID controller driver (which is a mass storage device driver) might be required. You will need to configure RAID before installing the operating system. For more information about configuring RAID, see the documentation that comes with your server. You can download the device drivers from the device driver matrix on the Lenovo Support Web site at: http://www.lenovo.com/support Installing the Windows Server 2008 operating systems This topic provides instructions on installing the following operating systems on your server: Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundations Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition (X86) Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition (X86) Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Foundations (X64) Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition (X64) Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition (X64) Microsoft Windows Multipoint Server 2011 To install an operating system, do the following: 1. Turn on the server and insert the Windows setup DVD into the DVD drive on your server. 2. When the message Press any key to boot from cd or dvd is displayed, press any key. Installation files will be copied from the setup DVD to your server. This process will take several minutes. 3. In the Windows Server 2008 installation window, configure the following options as you need and then click Next. Language to install 1
Time and currency format Keyboard or input method 4. Click Install now. 5. Click I accept the license terms, and then click Next. 6. Select Custom (Advanced). 7. When all hard disk drives available on the server are displayed, do one of the following to select or create a drive partition in which to install the operating system: Create a partition automatically: If you want to use the entire hard disk drive as one primary partition, highlight Disk0 unallocated space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install the operating system and then click Next. After the setup process completes, a partition is automatically created. Manually create a partition: If you want to create a new partition manually, do the following: a. Highlight Disk0 unallocated space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install the operating system, click Drive options (advanced), and then click New. b. Type the amount of space (in MB), and then click Apply. c. Click Next. The selected drive partition will be formatted and the applicable files will be copied to the drive partition. This process will take several minutes. After that, the server will restart. Note: A message No drives were found might be displayed indicating that you do not have a mass storage device driver installed. To install a mass storage device driver, connect the USB media device containing the RAID controller driver to your server, and then select Load Driver. 8. The setup will continue after the server restarts. 9. When the installation process is completed, the server automatically restarts. 10. Follow the instructions on the screen to change your password when you are prompted before you log on to the server for the first time. Note: Your password must be a combination of upper case letters, lower case letters, and numbers. 11. The setup process completes. You will need the product key to activate the operating system. Installing the Windows Small Business Server 2011 operating systems This topic provides instructions on the following: Installing the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard operating system on page 3 Installing the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials operating system on page 4 Installing Windows Small Business Server 2011 Premium Add-on on page 5 Before installing the operating system, make sure that your server meets the following requirements: At least 120 GB of free space on the hard disk drive on which you want to install the operating system At least 8 GB of memory for the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard operating system and 2 GB of memory for the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials operating system The network connection between your server and an external network connector is available. 2
Installing the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard operating system To install the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard operating system, do the following: 1. Turn on the server and insert the setup DVD into the DVD drive on your server. 2. When the message Press any key to boot from cd or dvd is displayed, press any key. The files are copied from the setup DVD to your server. This process will take several minutes. 3. In the Windows Small Business Server 2011 window, configure the following options as you need and then click Next. Language to install Time and currency format Keyboard or input method 4. Click Install now. 5. Click I accept the license terms and then click Next. 6. Select Custom (Advanced). 7. The installation process will continue after the server restarts. 9. In the Install Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard window, select a setup mode and then click Next. Clean Install: Select this option if you do not have an existing Windows domain. A Windows domain is a logical group of computers running versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system that share a central directory database. Select this option to set up a full new installation of the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard operating system. Server Migration: Select this option if you want to add this server to an existing Windows domain, and then install the server applications. If you select this option, you can have only one server that is running the Windows Small Business Server 2011 operating system on your network, and that server must be a domain controller of the network. 10. Verify the clock and time zone settings by clicking Open Date and Time to verify the clock and time zone settings and then set your date and time. 11. Click Next. 3
12. Select one of the following methods for your server network configuration: Automatically detect the network settings: This option enables your server to automatically detect the network settings of the network adapter. If you select this option, when the Get important updates window opens, it is recommended that you select Go online and get the most recent installation updates. Manually choose the network settings as follows: If you select this option, you will need to type the corresponding information in the Default Gateway and IP Address fields. Note: A message A network adapter was not found might be displayed indicating that you do not have the device driver installed. To install the device driver, click Open Device Manager to install drivers. After the device driver is installed, the server will restart and the installation process will continue. 13. Click Next. 14. Type your business information if necessary. 15. Personalize your server and your network by typing the server name and internal domain name, and then click Next. 16. Add a network administrator account by typing your name and the administrator password, and then click Next. 17. The setup process completes. You will need the product key to activate the operating system. Installing the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials operating system To install the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials operating system, do the following: 1. Turn on the server and insert the setup DVD into the DVD drive on your server. 2. When the message Press any key to boot from cd or dvd is displayed, press any key. The files will be copied from the setup DVD to your server. This process will take several minutes. 3. In the Windows Small Business Server 2011 window, click New installation. 4. When all hard disk drives available on the server are displayed, click Install. After that, the server will restart. Notes: If you click Install, all files and folders on your primary hard disk drive will be deleted. If no hard disk drives are displayed, this indicates that you do not have a device driver installed. To install a device driver, click Load drivers. 5. The installation process will continue after the server restarts. 6. A message A network device driver was not found might be displayed, indicating that you do not have the device driver installed. To install the device driver, click Install network drivers. After that, the server will restart. 7. In the Set Up Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials window, configure the following options as you need and then click Next. Country or region Time and currency Keyboard layout 8. Verify the date and time settings by clicking Change system date and time settings and then set your date and time. 9. Click I accept the license terms (required to use Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials) and then click Next. 4
10. Type your product key and click Next. 11. Personalize your server by typing the following information and then click Next. Company information Internal domain name Server name This information might be used to identify and distinguish your server on your network. Note: These settings cannot be changed after your server is set up. 12. Provide your administrator information by typing the administrator account name and the administrator password, and then click Next. To protect your network, use the administrator account only when you need to perform administrative tasks that require administrative privileges. 13. Provide your standard user account information by typing the standard user account name and the password, and then click Next. This account is used to log on to the network and perform normal tasks. 14. Select one of the following to keep your server up-to-date automatically. After that the server will restart. Use recommended settings Install updates only 15. After the server restarts, the setup process completes. You will need the product key to activate the operating system. Installing Windows Small Business Server 2011 Premium Add-on Windows Small Business Server 2011 Premium Add-on is an add-on component for the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard or Essentials operating system, it includes: An additional license for the Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition operating system SQL Server 2008 R2 To install Windows Small Business Server 2011 Premium Add-on, do the following: 1. Install the Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition operating system. For instructions on how to install the operating system, see Installing the Windows Server 2008 operating systems on page 1. 2. Insert the SQL Server 2008 R2 setup DVD into the DVD drive on your server. 3. When the AutoPlay window opens, click Run SETUP.EXE. 4. In the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup window, click OK. 5. In the SQL Server Installation Center window, click Installation New installation or add features to an existing installation. 6. The Setup Support Rules will identify the problems that might occur when you install the SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup support files: If no failure is reported, click OK. If any failure is reported, correct the failure and then click OK. 7. Select one of the following to specify the edition of SQL Server 2008 R2, and then click Next. Specify a free edition: This option enables you to specify a free edition of SQL Server 2008 R2, such as Evaluation or Express. Evaluation has the largest set of SQL Server 2008 R2 features, and it is activated with a 180-day expiration. To upgrade from one edition to another, run the Edition Upgrade Wizard. Enter the product key: This option requires you to enter a 25-character product key of SQL Server 2008 R2. The key information is available on the Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity label or product packaging. 5
8. Click I accept the license terms, and then click Next. 9. Click Install to install the SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup support files. 10. The Setup Support Rules will identify the problems that might occur during the installation, correct any failure that is reported, and then click Next. 11. Select one of the following to specify which feature components you want to install, and then click Next: SQL Server Feature Installation SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint All Features With Defaults 12. Select the Evaluation features to install, and then click Next. 13. The Installation Rules will identify if the installation process will be blocked, correct any failure that is reported, and then click Next. 14. Specify the name and ID for the instance of SQL Server, and then click Next. 15. Review the disk space summary for the SQL Server features you selected to make sure that you have enough disk space, and then click Next. 16. Specify the server accounts and collation configuration, and then click Next. 17. Specify the Database Engine authentication security mode, administrators, and data directories by clicking the Add Current User tab, and then click Next. 18. Specify Analysis Services administrators and data directories, and then click Next. 19. Specify the Reporting Services configuration mode by selecting one of the following, and then click Next. Install the native mode default configuration. Install the SharePoint integrated mode default configuration. Install, but do not configure the report server. (This option is recommended when you have only one server that is running the Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition operating system on your network.) 20. Specify the information that you would like to be sent to Microsoft automatically to improve future releases of SQL Server, and then click Next. 21. The Installation Configuration Rules will identify if the installation process will be blocked, correct any failure that is reported, and then click Next. 22. Verify the SQL Server 2008 R2 features to be installed and click Install. 23. When the SQL Server 2008 R2 installation is completed, click Close to exit. Installing device drivers After you finish installing the operating system, you might need to download and install the device drivers to make sure that the hardware devices in your server work correctly. To identify hardware devices that are not working correctly, open Device Manager by doing the following: 1. Click Start. 2. Right-click My Computer. 3. Click Manage and select Device Manager in the left pane. In Device Manager, hardware devices that are not working correctly are usually listed under Other Devices and are indicated by a yellow exclamation mark. To download and install a device driver, do the following: 6 1. Go to http://www.lenovo.com/support.
2. Click Downloads & Drivers ThinkServer. 3. Select the machine type. 4. Click the desired device driver installation file in the File link area to download it. 5. Copy the installation file to the server where the device driver is to be installed, and then double-click the installation file. 6. Click Next in the Welcome window. 7. In the License Agreement window, select I accept the terms in the license agreement, and then click Next to continue. 8. Specify the path where you want to save the installation file, and then click Next. 9. Click Install to begin the installation process. 10. When you are prompted that the installation has completed, click Finish. To configure the network, click Start Control Panel Network Connections, and then select New Connection Wizard to set up the network connection. To configure network protocols, right-click Local Area Connection in the Network connections window, and then click Properties. To join a domain, click Start Control Panel System, click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change. 7
