VISION STATEMENT To become a regional and international centre for excellence in the training, research, practice and consultancy in public health. MISSION STATEMENT Training and production of health workers who will promote health for all, and prevention of disease through the empowerment of communities to take control over health related risk factors. The Kenyatta University School of Public Health (KUSPH) was operationalised in July 2011 in recognition of the need to; train high level manpower in public health, strengthen delivery of innovative and creative public health professionals and researchers, and improve community engagement. The School is made up of the dean s office and three departments. The Dean s office is responsible for the day to day running of the School in liaison with the Departments. It is also the link between the central university administration and the departments. The School of Public Health is located in the Main Campus at the 8-4-4 Complex (2nd Floor room 117) 400 meters from the main gate (gate A). The school has the following teaching departments which offer both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs: Department of Community Health Department of Health Management and Informatics Department of environmental health Duration and Pattern of PostGraduate and Undergraduate Degree Programs DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY The Ph.D degree programs are offered by thesis examination. Masters Degree Courses The Masters Degree Courses extend over a minimum period of eighteen (18) months (two academic years). Undergraduate Degree Programs The undergraduate degree programs are offered within a period of four (4) academic years. The courses are offered by Coursework, Examination and Research Project. DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY HEALTH 1. Bachelor of Science in Community Health Mean grade of C+ (plus) at KCSE or its equivalent with at least C+ (plus) in English/Kiswahili, Mathematics and any one science or humanities subject. Holders of diplomas certificates in health related fields from recognized fields are considered with at least 2 years relevant post qualification experience. In addition, the candidate should have obtained a mean grade of C (plain) at KCSE or Division III at EACE. 2. Masters in Public Health A holder for health related first degree, first class honours or second class honours Upper division) i.e. Environmental Health, Nutrition, Community Health, Health Education, Health Administration and Planning, Health Service Management, Health Records and Information Management. Holders of second class (lower division) in health related field are considered when they have two years post qualification experience. Mode of Study: Part-time (KU City Campus), DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH MANAGEMENT AND INFORMATICS 1. Bachelor of Health Service Management Mean grade of C+ (plus) and above with a at least a C+ (plus) in the following subjects; English/Kiswahili, Biology/Biological Sciences/One humanities subject and Mathematics. Holder of a Diploma with a Credit pass in Health Records and Information Technology from a recognized institution with at least 2 years relevant post qualification experience. In addition the candidate should have obtained a C (plain) at KCSE or Division III at EACE. Holder of a Diploma with a Credit pass in Management or Systems Management from a recognized institution with at least 2 years relevant post qualification experience. Bachelor of Health Records & Information Management Mean grade of C+ (plus) and above with a at least a C+ (plus) in the following subjects; English/Kiswahili, Biology/Biological Sciences/One humanities subject and Mathematics. Holder of a Diploma with a Credit pass in Health Records and Information Technology from a recognized institution with at least 2 years relevant post qualification experience. In addition the candidate should have obtained a C (plain) at KCSE or Division III at EACE. Mode of Study: Part-time (KU City Campus), 3. Master of Science in Health Information Management Holder of a first degree in the following fields: Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Dentistry. Holder of a first degree Second Class (Lower Division) in the above disciplines with a minimum of two years post qualification. Holder of a first degree with a health related Post Graduate Diploma of Kenyatta University or any other recognized institution, with at least 2 years post qualification experience. Mode of Study: Part-time (KU City Campus) 4. Master of Health Management Holder of a first degree in the following fields: Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Dentistry. Holder of a first degree, First Class Honours or Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in any of the following fields: Environmental Health, Community Health, Nutrition, Psychology, Information Science, Economics, Business Administration, Commerce, Community Development, Public Administration, Law and Human Resource Management. Holder of a first degree Second Class (Lower Division) in the above disciplines with a minimum of two years post qualification experience in a health related field. Holder of a first degree with a health related Post Graduate Diploma of Kenyatta University or any other recognized institution, with at least 2 years post qualification experience. Holders of diploma certificates with a credit pass from recognized institutions with mean grade of C (plain) at KCSE or Division II at EACE and two years of relevant working experience. Bachelor of Science in Population Health Mean grade of C+ (plus) at KCSE or its equivalent with at least C+ (plus) in the following subjects: Mathematics/Physics, Chemistry/Physical Sciences, Biology/ Biological Sciences and English/Kiswahili. Holders of diploma certificates with a credit pass from recognized institutions with mean grade of C (plain) at KCSE or Division II at EACE and two years of relevant working experience. Mode of Study: 3. Master of Science in Occupation Health & safety A holder of Bachelor degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Public Health, Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Engineering, Population Health, Environmental Studies OR A holder of Bachelor degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Public Health, Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Engineering, Population Health, Environmental Studies with Lower Second Class honors shall be admitted provided he has two years work experience. Mode of Study: Part-time (KU City Campus) 5. Master of Public Health in Public Reproductive Health A holder of Bachelor degree in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, Nutrition and Dietetics, Pharmacy, Dentistry OR Bachelors Degree with at least Upper Second Honours in a health related field; Environmental Health, Population Health and Community Health among others. Those with Second Class Honours (Lower Division) in the above fields and at least two years relevant work experience in a health related field will be considered in exceptional cases. Mode of Study: Part-time Evening and Weekend (KU City Campus) 6. Master of Science in Water Supply & Sanitation A holder of a first degree in the following fields: Medicine Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Dentistry OR A holder of a first degree, first class honors or second class honors (upper division) in the following health related fields: Nutrition and Environmental Health related field OR A holder of a second class (lower division) in the above disciplines with a minimum of two years post qualification experience in a health related field OR A holder of a first degree with Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health with at least 2 years relevant post qualification experience. STUDENTS WELFARE The student community is multinational, multicultural and multiethnic. Students are supported through mentoring programmes, counseling support services on campus and welfare groups and clubs. Students are engaged in many cocurricular activities such as sports, cultural activities, community outreach, and first aid amongst others. The students are both government and self sponsored. ACADEMIC MEMBERS OF STAFF The School has and continues to engage highly qualified academic staff members who are experts in various health related fields such as public health and medicine. The academic members of staff are also engaged in various research activities. Their areas of research and interest vary from department to department. They are also called upon from time to time to offer consultancy services in their areas of specialization.
