1 THE UNIVERSITY OF GOROKA PROGRAMS ON OFFER IN 2016 ADMISSIONS CRITERIA A. POSTGRADUATE STUDY PROGRAMS AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS DOCTORAL PROGRAMS 1. Doctor of Philosophy 3 4 years The University of Goroka (UOG) offers a Doctor of Philosophy in most of the disciplines that are offered at postgraduate level. Prospective students that wish to in pursuing doctoral studies can contact the Director for Graduate Studies or the relevant Dean in a School. For Admission and Program Regulations governing the Doctor of Philosophy are advised to consult or obtain the University of Goroka Post Graduate Studies Handbook and consult the appropriate section of the publication. The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is offered in all Schools. A person interested in taking up doctoral studies may consult the relevant School Dean or Director, Post Graduate Studies. Admission Requirements: Degree of Master or a Bachelor with First Class Honors or equivalent from a Senaterecognized institution shall be eligible to apply to register as a student of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Applications should be made to the Chair of Post Graduate Studies Admissions and should include the details required by the prescribed form for Application for doctoral studies and a research proposal. The Application, upon receipt, will be registered and forwarded to the relevant School Post Graduate Studies for a recommendation to the Senate or its delegate. A recommendation for registration to doctoral studies must include the proposed name(s) of one or more supervisors. Applicants for the Doctor of Philosophy, upon admission will be registered provisionally for six months. Students, within the six months will be required to develop and prepare their thesis. At the end of that period Senate or its delegate - to confirm or cancel the student s candidature - will review the prepared work. A student s candidature will commence, if the review is confirmed, from the commencement of admission. Master of Education (By Research) [18 months] Area of Specialization: Curriculum Studies Educational Leadership & Management Teacher Education Bachelor of Education Honors, Second Class Upper Division or better from a recognized institution. More than two years of work experience in a relevant field of education. Two references from current or recent employer for more than two years. References from employers more than 5 years ago will not be considered. A research proposal of 500 words maximum in a nominated field of study. Applicants without an Honors qualification but wish to apply for a Masters must have an average GPA of 3.0 or better at undergraduate studies in level courses in Bachelor of Education or its equivalent. 2. Master of Education (By Coursework and Research) 18 months Bachelor of Education Honors, Second Class Upper Division or better from a recognized institution, or Obtained an appropriate Post Graduate Diploma with an overall GPA of 3.0 More than two years of work experience in a relevant field of education. SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Master s Degree Programs 1. Master of Science (By Research Only) - 18 months Specializations in: Biology Mathematics Science Education Bachelor of Science Honors, Second Class Upper Division or better from a recognized institution, or Bachelor of Science (Mathematics Honors), Second Class Upper Division or better from a recognized institution (for Masters in Mathematics), or Obtained an appropriate Post Graduate Diploma with an overall GPA of 3.0. More than two years of work experience in a relevant field of science. Two references from current or recent employer for more than two years. Where necessary, applicants with two years of work experience in a relevant field of education must supply two references from current or recent employer for more than two years. References from employers more than 5 years ago will not be considered. 5. Bachelor of Education 4 years Early Childhood Education Educational Psychology Information and Instructional Technology Grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or equivalent from recognized institutions. B grade or better in Language & Literature, or A grade in Applied English. C grade or better in Advanced Math, or B grade in General Math. 2. Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) Secondary (In-service) -2 years Curriculum Studies Educational Leadership and Management Social Development & Gender Studies Educational Psychology Teacher Education Special and Inclusive Education Guidance and Counseling Diploma in Teaching Secondary. Programs for Serving Primary Teachers that wish to upgrade their teaching qualification: 4.1 Graduate Certificate in Education (6 months or 12 months DFL) Bachelor of Education in Teaching Primary. Professional registration as a teacher. More than two years of teaching experience. Satisfactory Report from the Regional Standard Officer of applicant s performance (Report must be within the last five years from the date of application). 10 4.2 Graduate Diploma in Education (12 months or 24 months DFL) Bachelor of Education in Teaching Primary. Graduate Certificate in Education. Professional registration as a teacher. More than two years of teaching experience. Satisfactory Report from the Regional Standard Officer of applicant s performance (Report must be within the last five years from the date of application). Any other qualification and/or experience deemed appropriate by the Admissions 5. Diploma in Early Childhood Education 2 years Grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or equivalent from recognized institutions. B grade or better in Language & Literature. B grade General Mathematics, or C in Advanced Mathematics. Certificate in Early Childhood Education from recognized institutions and references (both character and professional) within the last five years from the date of application. Official Police and Medical clearances must be attached. Experiences in childcare activities including First Aid would be an advantage. Any other experiences as deemed necessary by the Admissions 6. Diploma in Guidance and Counseling 2 years Grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 2.2 or equivalent from recognized institutions. B grade or better in Language & Literature. C grade in General Mathematics, or C in Advanced Mathematics. Official Police and Medical clearances must be attached. Experiences in counseling and related activities would be an advantage. Qualifications in Guidance and Counseling related fields from recognized institutions and references (both character and professional) within the last five years from the date of application. Students who have a Diploma (Accounting/Management) with a GPA of 2.7 from a recognized tertiary institution. 3. Any other experience and/or qualification deemed appropriate by the Admissions 4. Primary teachers that wish to migrate to Secondary Teaching will need to complete the Bachelor of Arts. After successful completion of the Bachelor of Arts, applicants may apply for the Diploma in Teaching Secondary. Graduate Diploma in Arts with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Grade 12 from a recognized institution with a GPA of 2.2 or better with a minimum of B in Language and Literature, or A in Applied English and B in General Math, or C in Advanced Math. More than three years of work experiences in the area of maternal health services of the government, church and NGOs. Plus satisfactory inspector s supervisor s reports (Inspection report must be within the last five years from the date of application). Any other qualification and experience deemed appropriate by the Admissions 6. Programs for Serving Primary Teachers that wish to upgrade their content: 6.1 Graduate Certificate in Science, or Mathematics 6 months or 12 months DFL Bachelor of Education in Teaching Primary. Grade 12 from a recognized institution with a GPA of 2.2 or better with a minimum of B in Language and Literature, or A in Applied English and B in General Math, or C in Advanced Math. Any other qualification and experience deemed appropriate by the Admissions 8. Programs for Serving Secondary Teachers that wish to upgrade their content in the Sciences: Graduate Diploma in Science 12 months or 24 months DFL Bachelor of Education in Secondary Teaching. Satisfactory report from supervisor. 10. Diploma in Post Vocational Teacher Education(PVTE) Agriculture 1 year Diploma or Certificate Agriculture, Tropical Agriculture or PCD Agriculture with a minimum GPA of 2.2. Minimum of 3 years fieldwork experience Satisfactory report from supervisor 11. Diploma in Post Vocational Teacher Education(PVTE) Health 1 year Heath Education Health Teaching Certificate or Diploma in Nursing in any health professional specialty from accredited institutions recognized by NDOH. Professional Registration as a Nurse with PNG Nursing Council. More than three years of work experiences in the area of Health Education or Health Teaching with health services of the government, church and NGOs. Plus satisfactory inspector s supervisor s reports (Inspection report must be within the last five years from the date of application). For Health Teaching, the applicant should be recommended and supported by health training institutions. Any other qualification and experience deemed appropriate by the Admissions 16 P a g e

17 INSTITUTE OF TECHNICAL VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING 1. Bachelor of Applied Science - 4 years (Major in Food & Nutrition, or Textiles & Fashion Design, or Family & Community Studies) Grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or equivalent from recognized institutions. C grade or better in Language and Literature, or B grade in Applied English. C grade in Advanced Math, or B grade in General Math. C grade or better in Science subjects in Year 12. Other qualifications and/or experiences as deemed acceptable by the University 2. Bachelor of Design & Technology - 4 years (Major in Building Construction or Welding & Metal Fabrication or Wood & Furniture Making or Motor Mechanic) Grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or equivalent from recognized institutions. C or better in Language and Literature, or B in Applied English. C in Advanced Math, or B in General Math. C grade or better in Science subjects in Year 12. Other qualifications and/or experiences as deemed acceptable by the University 3. Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management - 4 years Grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or equivalent from recognized institutions. C or better in Language and Literature, or B in Applied English. C in Advanced Math, or B in General Math. For both Humanities and Science-based specializations C grade or better in Science or Humanities subjects in Year 12. Other qualifications and/or experiences as deemed acceptable by the University Students with diploma (Tourism & Hospitality or Tourism/Hospitality) maybe admitted into the 2 nd or 3 rd year as deemed appropriate by the University, and also grades in Year 12 subjects as listed above. 17 P a g e

Bachelor of TVET (Business Studies Content) 2 years Diploma in Teaching TVET (Business) Certificate in the respective specialization from recognized institutions and references (both character and professional) within the last five years from the date of application. Experiences in the respective specialization business activities would be an advantage. Other qualifications and/or experiences as deemed acceptable by the University 5. Bachelor of TVET (Technical Content) 2 years Diploma in Teaching TVET (Technical) Current Motor Mechanic tradesman with technical qualifications. With four years of apprenticeship training and tradesman certificate. Possess trade testing certificates level 1-3 or NQF 1-4 with good practical experience. Other qualifications and/or experiences as deemed acceptable by the University 6. Diploma in Hotel Operations Management 2 years Grade 12 GPA with minimum of 2.3 or equivalent to grade 12 certificate with B grade or better in Language and Literature C grade in Science and Mathematics or better. A grade in Applied English. B or better in Tourism and Hospitality at Secondary Schools. Or Grade 10 with National Certificate III & IV in Hospitality with good grades. Or Grade 10 with National Certificate III or IV in Hospitality with minimum 3 years of experience in Hotel industry and Other qualifications as deemed accepted by the University. 7. Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management - 2 years Grade 12 GPA with minimum of 2.3 or equivalent to grade 12 certificate with B grade or better in Language & Literature and Mathematics A grade in Applied English C grade in Science or Humanities and Mathematics or better. B or better in Tourism and Hospitality at Secondary Schools. Or Grade 10 with National Certificate III & IV in Hospitality with good grades. 18 P a g e

Diploma in Creative Industries - 2 years Grade 12 GPA with minimum of 2.3 or equivalent to grade 12 certificate with B grade or better in Language & Literature and Mathematics A grade in Applied English C grade or better in Science or Humanities streams and Other qualifications as deemed acceptable by the University 9. Diploma in the following Specializations 2 years Sports and Recreation Management Physical Education Grade 12 with a minimum GPA of 2.25 or equivalent from recognized institutions. C grade or better in Language & Literature and Advanced/General Math. Certificate IV in the respective specialization from recognized institutions and references (both character and professional) within the last five years from the date of application. Experiences in the respective specialization fields would be an advantage. Any other experiences as deemed necessary by the University. 10. Diploma in TVET 1 year Specialization will include: Teaching Technical Vocational Education ( Technical) Teaching Technical Vocational Education ( Business Studies) Teaching Physical Education (PVTE) Diploma in the respective specialization from recognized institutions and references (both character and professional) within the last five years from the date of application. Experiences in the respective specialization would be a minimum of 3 years Humanities candidates with minimum GPA of 2.3 can also apply. Certificate III in the following Specializations 6 weeks (LAHARA) Sport & Recreation Management Physical Education for the Certificate Courses: 1.
