Executive committee members were asked to answer three questions: Why am I here?, What goals do I have for UBC this year?, What does UBC mean to me? Patrice Isabella reviewed the contributions of each member and suggested a discussion of each of the goals presented by the members. Elizabeth Smith stated that the purpose for achieving 501 (C)(3) statues is so that UBC will be recognized as a charitable organization and be eligible for grants. Melissa Knighton asked if UBC may have 501 (C)(3) statues if the national organization does. (we do not). Patrice Isabella asked if 501 (C)(3) status is a priority for the 2008 year. Executive committee members agreed that it is. We will see if Ellen Kitzmiller will be able to assist us after August 1. Members agreed that the issues facing UBC regarding 501 (C)(3) statues are

time, money, and expertise. A committee was formed to look into these issues and Melissa Knighton will host a work group for committee to meet where Troy Knighton, CPA, may be able to answer questions. Melissa Knighton, Elizabeth Smith, Elena Stevens, and Patrce Isabella will make up committee. Committee will meet 6/13 at 9:00 at Melissa Knighton s home. Business Case Training Per grant from CDC, Elizabeth Smith and Judy Harris will conduct training with a goal of training 8 to 10 people to approach and encourage businesses to support employee lactation. First session will be May 1 st from 8 am to 12 noon at the Health Department. UBC involvement with healthcare professionals Dr. Jay Moreland is active in working with UBC and healthcare community. Sonya Fowles stated that she provides a training called Breastfeeding is Good Medicine for educating physicians, nursing school students, etc. It was mentioned that healthcare professionals may be more receptive to members of their peer group. Basic education materials and needed including: risks of formula, best practices, and breastfeeding basics. Patrice Isabella inquired does UBC have someone with graphic design experience. Elizabeth Smith stated her secretary is experienced in graphic design. Leadership and Membership A discussion was had on what we have to offer potential members and what is

a good way to reach out to potential members. Utah Mom s For Clean Air was used as a good example of getting people involved in a community organization. Goals for membership: updating membership brochure and sending a task list out to members and friends. Heather Hendriksen formed a yahoo group for posting materials and file sharing. A short discussion was held on becoming a chapter of USLCA. We need 25% IBCLC on our board to qualify. We need to obtain a list of IBCLCs in Utah to promote membership to. 2008 Breastfeeding Café We are waiting on Select 25 grant to know what budget is for 2008 Breastfeeding Café Sonya Fowles agreed to be chair. Elizabeth Smith and Melissa Knighton volunteered to be co-chairs on committee. Other possible co-chairs: Jean Hermann, Lisa Harper, Julie Johnson. Sonya Fowles will contact them. Executive committee decided that the name of the Breastfeeding Café will stay the same as it now has brand awareness and goodwill. Suggestions to be discussed by committee at later date: moving café around, shorting hours of café to high traffic time. Treasurer s Report Marie Nagata passed out 2008 budget and procedure for taking money at events.

Barbara Bean Committee Reports Barbara Bean is our current contact for Intermountain Pediatric Society. She would like to work with UBC on networking with pediatric community. Patrice Isabella, Elizabeth Smith, and Cara Munsonwill be meeting with her again on June 17 th. Elizabeth Smith reported that UBC will sign on as partners with Utah Partnership for Healthy Weight. Cara Munson asked for suggestions about a fall event for the education committee. It was suggested a small event be held during 2008 Breastfeeding Café to meet this requirement. It was also suggested that a this small event be a presentation about the journey to baby-friendly statues for hospitals. We discussed updating breastfeeding resource guide for community: Lois Foard and Julie Fixstead have expressed interest. Current guide needs to be distributed.
