1 Congratulations Association of Rehabilitation Nurses 2010 Award and Scholarship Winners! Distinguished Service Award Cynthia Jacelon, PhD RN CRRN Associate Professor University of Massachusetts School of Nursing Cynthia is a past-president of the ARN board and former chair of the RNF. She has also served as a key contributor to a variety of national committees and task forces and has been a champion of support for ARN chapters. Cynthia has been a consistent supporter and contributor to rehabilitation nursing research, playing a key role in developing the RNF research agenda. She has conducted research on dignity in the aging population and has published her findings in the Journal of Rehabilitation Nursing. Among her most notable recent contributions, Cynthia has taken on the critical task of serving as editor for the new 6th edition of the The Specialty Practice of Rehabilitation Nursing: A Core Curriculum. President's Award Cindy Gatens, MN RN CRRN Clinical Nurse Specialist As a charter member of ARN, many members have had the privilege to work with Cindy on a number of ARN committees and projects. She has mentored many nurses who may not have selected rehabilitation nursing as their first practice area choice and who may not have stayed in rehabilitation practice if not for Cindy's "coaching." Cindy has continually and actively contributed to the organization during the past 36 years and is a worthy recipient of this award because of her dedication and devotion to the practice of rehabilitation nursing and to ARN nationally and locally. Cindy has willingly and consistently responded whenever called upon by ARN to serve. She values her colleagues, the team with which she works, and the rehabilitation patients who benefit from her expertise. Advanced Practice Nurse The Advanced Practice Nurse Award recognizes a nurse in an advanced role who has contributed to the advancement of rehabilitation nursing care. Cindy E. This, in combination with her sophistication in her approach to solving clinical issues, is indicative of her passion for the person who has suffered a neurologic injury or illness. Her clinical excellence and her professional organization participation espouse her great potential for important contributions to this clinical specialty." Case Manager The Case Manager Award recognizes a nurse who has actively engaged in the advancement of the case manager's role within the rehabilitation field. Pamela M. Thomson, BSN RN CRRN Rehabilitation Case Manager Garden City Hospital Garden City, MI "Pam lives and breathes rehabilitation in every waking moment whether it's meeting a stranger on the street who requires physical help or someone in her church who has a question, explaining the expectations to a hesitant new admission, thorough discharge planning, phoning patients 90 days after discharge for a follow-up on their functional ability, or advocating for the rights of the disabled." Educator The Educator Award recognizes a nurse who has contributed to the advancement of rehabilitation nursing care through an academic or educational role. Sally Ann Gutierrez, MSN RN CRRN Educator TIRR Memorial Hermann Houston, TX "Ann utilized a model research grant to develop an intermittent catheterization video for patients. She worked to contact the video department to collaborate on the educational video to prepare the patient for clean technique catheterization at home." Nurse Executive The Nurse Executive Award recognizes a rehabilitation nurse who has contributed to the advancement of rehabilitation nursing care in a high-level administration role. Lisa Bagley, MSN RN CRRN Nursing Director, Intensive Medicine

3 Intermountain Healthcare, Intermountain Medical Center Murray, UT "Lisa is deeply passionate about nursing and all that nursing entails. Her sense of excellence in the field of nursing has won her the respect of colleagues throughout the Urban Central and Urban South Regions of the Intermountain Healthcare Corporation." Nurse Manager The Nurse Manager Award recognizes a nurse who has contributed to the advancement of rehabilitation nursing care in a middle management position. Janelle Janowiecki, BSN RN CRRN Nurse Manager Columbus, OH "Janelle leads her staff to excellence and mentors new management team members; she is the most experienced rehabilitation nurse on the management team and one of the reasons for Dodd Hall's national and local recognition." Staff Nurse The Staff Nurse Award recognizes outstanding practice by a rehabilitation nurse in a direct patient care role. Karyn Kling, BSN RN CRRN Staff Nurse MossRehab Elkins Park, PA "Karyn's personal philosophy of rehabilitation nursing is to help patients with brain injury transform from the dark side of disability and despair into the light of ability and selfactualization through caring." BSN Scholarship Recipient ARN offers financial assistance in the form of a $1,000 scholarship to nurses working toward a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree. 4 ARN established the Mary Ann Mikulic Scholarship to honor the memory of Mary Ann Mikulic, one of ARN's early leaders. The scholarship covers full tuition to the online Professional Rehabilitation Nursing Course. Communication Award This award is given to a chapter that has excelled in regularly communicating with its members. Education Award This award is given to the chapter that has provided an extraordinary educational event above and beyond the requirements designated by ARN. Greater North Carolina Chapter Membership Recruitment/Retention Award This award is given to a chapter that has exceptional membership recruitment and retention methods.
