Saudi Arabia s Agro-Food Sector in 2013 Reap the Benefits of a Fast-Growing Food Market Despite the global economic instability, Saudi Arabia s economy is still steadily and rapidly growing, thanks to large government spending and an expanding private sector. The 2011 raise in public sector wages and social benefits led to an increase in consumer spending, mainly in household expenditure, with a 4.5% expected GDP growth by 2013. Similarly, the rising population and high GDP per capita in the GCC, particularly in Saudi Arabia, will create a surge in the food sector. New lifestyles and education are encouraging a shift toward healthy food segments, such as dairy produce. Milk consumption is a main factor driving the GCC dairy market, 60% of which belongs to Saudi Arabia. According to BMI, milk demand has recorded a 6% annual increase over the past few years. The Nielsen Company indicated that the GCC dairy market was worth US$ 3.2 billion in 2011, with an expected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.5% over the next three years. Food to Play a Crucial Role in Retail Sales Growth According to Bloomberg Businessweek, the Saudi government has prioritized job creation by targeting the retail sector and promoting the fast food market, since the restaurant industry is the Kingdom s main source of entertainment. Fast food companies will be expanding in the next 3 to 5 years, creating new opportunities in the agro-food market. Competition is growing as many foreign brands are entering the country. EIU research valued the Saudi retail sales market at US$ 83.3 billion in 2011; US$ 41.7 billion (or 50%) of which was from food sales, expected to reach US$ 69.9 billion by 2016. By the end of 2013: 9.75% increase in food consumption 8.6% growth in confectionery value sales 11.7% surge in mass grocery retail TRANSACTIONS
Food sales to represent more than 50% of retail sales by 2016 A higher level of disposable income among the young population is increasing demand for better quality and more diversified products. According to 2010 UN statistics, 32% of the Saudi population are 0-14 years of age, while approximately 50% are in the 15-40 age range, making the country and ideal market for food and beverage companies. Higher income levels are also leading to a shift from a carbohydrates-based diet (grains) to a protein-based diet (meat, eggs, dairy products), with poultry having the highest consumption rate. Juices and baked goods are also emerging subsectors.
