Master of Science in Education - Literacy Individuals who hold a valid Wisconsin teaching license who want to develop expertise in the area of Literacy while earning a Master s degree and meet requirements for the Wisconsin Reading License. What you learn: The Graduate Literacy program is designed to provide teachers the skills and knowledge necessary to become expert reading teachers and to prepare graduate students to become literacy leaders with skills in teacher coaching, decision-making, relationship building, applying action research knowledge, and advance in leadership qualities. License #16 is an 18-credit certification that gives the teacher the skills to be an expert reading teacher within the classroom setting. License #17 is an additional 15 credits built on the license #16 and provides the teacher with the skills necessary to work on a district level developing and implementing reading programs. How you learn: Online Cohort: This is an online cohort. You will check in online to complete assignments and participate in online discussions and group activities. While there are no face-to-face requirements, some live online sessions and/or conference call sessions may be required. In addition, you will need access to a school or other learning organization in order to complete some course assignments. You will finish one credit course every 8 weeks. Counseling Program This program is for students who desire to obtain a Master of Science in Education and become eligible to be licensed as a school or professional counselor in the state of Wisconsin. What you learn: This program is designed to prepare graduate students with the required knowledge, skills, disposition and experiences for professional counseling careers. Students have the option of preparing for their counseling practice in a school or professional setting. How you learn (Choose from two options): Online Cohort: You will check in online to complete assignments and participate in online discussions and group activities. Most individual student assignments do not require logging in on a specific date and time, but some live online sessions and/or conference call sessions may be required. In addition, you will need access to a school or community based counseling organization in order to complete some course assignments. Typically, you will finish one credit course every 8 weeks. An on-campus, two course experience will be required during one summer of the program or the student may choose taking the two courses over a two summer period (It may also be possible to complete the summer courses at an approved junior college, college or university, subject to Program Director s approval). Each of the on-campus courses are offered in an eight consecutive day accelerated format with COUN 89-Individual Counseling starts on the second Monday of July and COUN 894-Group Counseling starts on the fourth Monday of July. Career Outcomes: Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to obtain a Master of Science in Education (School Counseling) or a Master of Science in Education (Professional Counseling). The school counseling master degree meets requirements for an initial educator school counseling license #54 through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). DPI-licensed teachers may choose to take two additional classes, EDG 62 and EDG 6, in order to qualify for the Alternative Education License #952. The professional counseling master degree meets requirements for professional counseling training license and is approved by the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing (DRL). Upon completion of our program, students will be eligible to pursue the Wisconsin LPC licensure requirements. Applicants must possess a bachelor degree, preferably, in education, psychology, social work, sociology, criminal justice, nursing, or ministry. The face-to-face cohort and on-line cohort programs will have designated courses in the first eight areas of courses listed below with a total of 45 credits required for graduation. In addition to the course requirements, school counseling students must complete a Portfolio 1,2 and and pass a Praxis II examination in school guidance and counseling in order to meet school counseling certification requirements. School counseling students without a teaching license are required to complete COUN 620/920-Management of School Counselors for a total of 48 credits. Educational Administration Program Experienced educators with a Wisconsin teaching license who are interested in becoming an administrator in a K-12 school or district. What you learn: The Educational Administration Degree program is designed to equip teachers and administrators with skills in decision-making, leadership, human resource management, teacher evaluation, organization, and public relations. How you learn (Choose from two options): Online Cohort: This is an online cohort. You will check in online to complete assignments and participate in online discussions and group activities. While there are no face-to-face requirements, some live online sessions and/or conference call sessions may be required. Alternative Education License Program Overview: Acknowledging that large and/or traditional school environments do not meet the needs of all students, the Alternative Education License is designed to work with teachers, school districts and community members to develop programs that help all students become successful, including those who are at-risk, vulnerable or disengaged. For the student who has lost his or her way, this might include jail or detention based education, credit acceleration, a behavior program or an opportunity to return to a traditional school. The Alternative Education License is an additional license for individuals who possess a teacher s license from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The program itself does not require a teacher s license and may be of interest to anyone who works with children, their families, and at-risk youth. The course also intends to help develop attitudes, skills and techniques to be effective teachers of the at-risk student. Response to Intervention (RtI) and Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) are discussed. The course looks at social, personal, cultural and community dynamics in relation to the education of students who are at risk. Alternative Education This course studies the nature of the alternative education K-12 program in the public schools and impact on the community. Various delivery systems and the role of the teacher in each system are addressed. Alternative education, as part of a community process, is discussed. Discussion will range from early intervention to last chance programs. Teaching and Learning Program This specialty is designed to prepare you to be a master classroom teacher through improved teaching skills and an increased understanding of the process of education. It provides student-educators with a range of choices of classes for license renewal or to increase expertise in your area of special interest. Portfolio assessment is done throughout the program. It is not required that a student hold a teaching license for acceptance into the program. Special Education Program This specialty is designed to prepare students in both cross-categorical and early childhood special education. It provides teaching professionals with the opportunity to identify characteristics of children with disabilities, assess their individual needs, and design intervention strategies by adapting and/or accommodating instruction. Developed to meet all state and CEC standards, the program provides rigorous, comprehensive courses that include numerous field experiences. Graduate students may choose to earn only their Special Education licensure or, by including a research component, earn a Master s degree in Special Education. Students must pass the PRAXIS II test in Special Education, Cross Categorical for Early Childhood or Elementary prior to receipt of Special Education Licensure. Program Highlights & Benefits: The program is designed and developed to meet all the state standards and the standards of the Council of Exceptional Children (CEC). The program endorses interdisciplinary teaching and strategies utilizing instructors from the School of Education and the School of Human Services (Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Social Work). Because Special Education has been designated as an area of teacher shortage, upon graduation, teachers often qualify for loan reduction or loan cancellation.
