PRODUCT SHEET CA VM:Backup for z/vm CA VM:Backup for z/vm CA VM:Backup for z/vm (CA VM:Backup) provides an efficient and reliable means of backing up CMS and non-cms data in z/vm and mainframe Linux systems. End users can easily restore their individual files or minidisks while full volumes or entire systems can be restored by administrators. The CA VM:Backup HiDRO (High Speed Disaster Recovery Option) Feature adds stand-alone backup and restore capability when no operating system is running on the processor. Overview Loss of data in any amount from individual files to an entire data center can mean a disaster for any organization. A backup and recovery plan must be implemented to allow you to recover from the loss of any amount of data. CA VM:Backup combined with the CA VM:Backup HiDRO Feature provides a comprehensive solution that enables you to more easily back-up and restore CMS as well as non-cms data and to more easily and quickly restore that data should the need arise. Business value CA VM:Backup supports highly flexible backup strategies that enable you to more easily schedule and run backups when needed. Data can be quickly restored by an end user without administrator intervention. Tape volume and backup catalog management help provide for the integrity of your backup data. An authorized administrator can easily implement and tailor the server to meet your organization s requirements.

Efficient and reliable backup and restoration of z/vm and Linux on System z data Loss of data through the inadvertent deletion of a file, hardware malfunction or the complete destruction of a data center can prove to be very costly to any organization. To prevent information loss, you must implement a backup and recovery plan that enables you to fully recover from a disaster of any size. All information must be saved accurately, backup tapes and catalogs must be organized effectively, recovery must be quick and reliable, end users must be able to restore their own files and minidisks, and administration of your backup system must be simple and automated. Large or small, when disaster strikes it's too late to start making your recovery plan. CA VM:Backup provides a comprehensive set of features that enable you to effectively back-up and restore CMS and non-cms data with unsurpassed reliability and performance. CA VM:Backup also offers automated tape management, catalog management and administration. High Speed Disaster Recovery Option (HiDRO) is a unique CA VM:Backup feature that extends these capabilities with a standalone restore option that enables you to restore a system without z/vm being up and running. This feature can be used for disaster recovery or for all backup and restore needs. Features Mainframe 2.0 As part of Mainframe 2.0 strategy, CA Technologies has implemented features that will enable your staff to install, deploy, and service your z/vm products from CA Technologies more effectively and quickly. CA Mainframe VM Product Manager provides a comprehensive suite of tools that automate the deployment of z/vm products from CA Technologies. Deployment of CA VM:Backup and the CA VM:Backup HiDRO Feature is simplified. Each release can be installed and maintained in a single library, and the single set of product code can be deployed to create multiple executable instances of CA VM:Backup (and/or the HiDRO Feature) on the same system. 2

Standard implementation of IBM VMSES/E (Virtual Machine Serviceability Enhancements Staged/Extended) provides numerous benefits to CA VM:Backup users. Industry standard procedures are now used to install and service CA VM:Backup and other z/vm products from CA Technologies, providing a consistent look and feel and increased productivity. Skills already developed to service z/vm itself can be leveraged to service CA VM:Backup, so the procedures and commands will be familiar. Installation of PTFs is greatly simplified, including the automated inclusion of all necessary prerequisites, providing significant time savings. The CA VM:Backup HiDRO Feature, which is installed separately, has also been enhanced to support installation and maintenance using VMSES/E, providing increased consistency, productivity and time savings. What s new in CA VM:Backup Infrastructure enhancements: The use of common code across z/vm products from CA Technologies will increase our development team s effectiveness and agility, enabling CA Technologies to deliver new features and enhancement to our customers more quickly and efficiently. Directory reader: CA VM:Backup and CA VM:Backup HiDRO Feature now uses a centralized routine to retrieve information from the CP Object Directory. CA VM:Backup retrieves directory information when a backup or restore job is built. It also retrieves volume and location information when specific minidisks are being processed. The CA VM:Backup HiDRO Feature retrieves information from the directory when backup and restore jobs are generated. Option EDRSUP default set to on: CA VM:Backup now goes beyond using the first two bytes of the RDEV block to identify a tape device and the media it can use. Additionally, the RDC (Real Device Characteristics) and CUI (Control Unit Information) control blocks are used to determine the precise DEVICE, MODEL, and MANUFACTURER for each tape device. This determines the compatible media. Encryption support: Compliance requirements are becoming stricter all the time. The need for encrypted backups is clear. The CA VM:Backup HiDRO Feature has been enhanced to support encryption of backups using Triple DES, and AES algorithms, to help you meet compliance requirements and to better secure sensitive data. 3

Key capabilities Backup features: CA VM:Backup provides a high degree of flexibility in selecting the data to be backed-up and the method for performing the backup. BACKUP OPTIONS CA VM:Backup can be configured to run on a schedule that best suits the needs of your site. Three types of backups are provided: Full Incremental Cumulative incremental By combining different types of backups you can customize a backup schedule that best utilizes your system resources and protects your data. SFS backup: CA VM:Backup provides comprehensive support for the Shared File System (SFS) including the POSIX compliant Byte File System (BFS). This support is integrated into every aspect of the product, including full screen menus and backup templates. CMS minidisk file checking: When performing a full backup of a CMS minidisk, CA VM:Backup provides that the backup includes a stable view of every file on the minidisk. Non-CMS minidisk backup: CA VM:Backup supports both full and incremental backups of non-cms data. Wait and retry cycle: When CA VM:Backup encounters an active minidisk during a logical backup, it temporarily skips the minidisk and backs up other data. It then returns to see if the previously active minidisk has become stable enough to be backedup without changing. Data packing and encryption: CA VM:Backup packs data when saving to a tape and can also encrypt data using standard encryption methods. Fast physical backups: CA VM:Backup can be used to create physical backups that support the timely recovery of the foundation of your system in disaster recovery situations. Restore features: Data can be restored quickly and simply with CA VM:Backup. Integrated minidisk and SFS facilities: CA VM:Backup can restore files to a different file pool or the same file pool that has been reconfigured. It can also restore the files to a CMS minidisk or to an SFS file pool. End-user restores: End users are provided with a complete set of full screens to simplify the process of restoring their own backed-up files. 4

DASD volume restores: As an administrator, you can instruct CA VM:Backup to locate and restore all minidisks for a specific volume. You can also use it to format and label each CMS minidisk automatically before restoring data. Alternate DASD volume restore: CA VM:Backup allows you to restore an image of all or part of one volume. This helps you to quickly replace a failing disk volume with a new one. Disaster recovery component: CA VM:Backup enables you to recover your entire z/vm system quickly and safely by enabling you to restore essential system components from physical backups. It then uses its incremental restore capabilities to recover the most current data on the system. Additional DASD utilities: CA VM:Backup provides high-speed DASD utilities that help with both your day to day DASD maintenance activities as well as with disaster recovery. Disk format: The CA VM:Backup HiDRO Feature provides a high-speed FORMAT function that can be used to CMS format minidisks of any size or type. DASD duplicate: The CA VM:Backup HiDRO Feature provides a high-speed DUPLICATE function that can be used to duplicate minidisks and DASD volumes of any size, format, or type. Tape and catalog management: CA VM:Backup provides you with flexible tape and catalog management, helping to provide for the integrity of your backup data. Tape management: CA VM:Backup has its own tape volume management system to track and manage backup tapes. It also includes a powerful interface to CA VM:Tape. Duplicate tape creation: CA VM:Backup protects against data loss due to accidental destruction of backup tapes by simultaneously creating up to five copies of each backup tape. Full standard labels: CA VM:Backup uses standard label tapes with expiration date protection to provide that backup tape volumes are not reused prematurely. Online catalog: CA VM:Backup maintains a catalog of all minidisks and SFS directories, and optionally, all file backups. Implementation and administration: CA VM:Backup allows a system administrator to easily implement and configure the system to assist in tailoring the product to your organization s requirements. Full screen administration: CA VM:Backup comes with a default configuration. The system administrator screens allow you to dynamically tailor the configuration to your site s specific needs. Multitasking: CA VM:Backup can simultaneously execute multiple backup and restore jobs, handle user commands and perform other functions. 5

Checkpoint restart: CA VM:Backup enables backup and restore jobs to recover from job or system ABENDs as well as CP or CMS failures. Authorized data access: CA VM:Backup preserves your system security by prohibiting direct user access to backup data. A user selects files, minidisks and SFS directories to restore, but only the service machine can access the backup tape volumes to restore data. User exits: CA VM:Backup can be customized to meet your special needs using the user exits provided. Integration: CA VM:Backup integrates with other CA VM:Manager Suite for Linux on System z products to help you optimize your data center operations. CA VM:Tape provides automatic tape drive allocation, robotic control and additional auditing capabilities for CA VM:Backup tape mounts. CA VM:Archiver uses the CA VM:Backup tape I/O capabilities to write files to and read files from tape storage. CA VM:Schedule schedules the submission of CA VM:Backup jobs so that system backups are not forgotten, but automatically performed on a schedule that meets the operational needs of the installation. CA VM:Secure works with CA VM:Backup to help provide that a restore job has the same security privileges and security restrictions as the submitting user ID. Delivery approach CA Services provides a portfolio of mainframe services delivered through CA Technologies internal staff and a network of established partners chosen to help you achieve a successful deployment and get the desired business results as quickly as possible. Our standard service offerings are designed to speed deployment and accelerate the learning curve for your staff. CA Technologies field-proven best practices and training help you lower risk, improve use/adoption and ultimately align the product configuration to your business requirements. 6
