1 PRODUCT SHEET CA 1 Tape Management CA 1 Tape Management r12 CA 1 Tape Management r12 (CA 1) provides for the management, control, and protection of z/os tape data sets and volumes. CA 1 integrates with the latest automated tape libraries and robotics systems, both virtual and real. Moreover, it automates tape management tasks while providing protection against the inadvertent destruction of tape files. Overview CA 1 controls and protects z/os tape data sets and volumes. It automates tape management tasks while ensuring protection against the inadvertent destruction of tape files and features complete tape library inventory and audit tracking, including offsite vaults and utilities for controlling tape and catalog maintenance activities. Business value CA 1 delivers tape data protection, library management, and automation to typical z/os organizations that process thousands of tape files daily. It enables a higher level of integrity for data residing on tape and streamlines the process of protecting this vital resource. It is scalable and extensible to encompass tape management across the enterprise.

2 Features Mainframe 2.0 CA 1 has adopted key Mainframe 2.0 features that are designed to simplify your use of CA 1 and enable your staff to install, deploy and maintain it more effectively and quickly. CA Mainframe Software Manager : CA Mainframe Software Manager (CA MSM) automates CA 1 deployment and maintenance and removes SMP/E complexities. The Software Acquisition Service enables you to easily move product installation packages and maintenance from CA Support Online directly to your mainframe environment and prepare them for installation. The Software Installation Service standardizes CA 1 installation, which includes a new, streamlined Electronic Software Delivery (ESD) method that allows CA 1 to be installed using standard utilities. This service also provides standardized SMP/E product installation and maintenance via APARs and PTFs, and simplifies SMP/E processing through an intuitive graphical user interface and an intelligent installation wizard. The Software Deployment Service enables you to easily deploy CA 1 in your mainframe environment. CA MSM Consolidated Software Inventory (CSI) updates and infrastructure improvements add flexibility to CA MSM processing of CSIs and enable CA MSM to more effectively utilize CPU and system memory. Installation Verification Program (IVP) and Execution Verification Program (EVP): As part of qualification for inclusion in the set of mainframe products from CA Technologies released every May, CA 1 has passed stringent tests performed through the IVP and EVP to find and resolve interoperability problems prior to release. These programs are an extension of CA Technologies ongoing interoperability certification initiative launched in May Best Practices guide: This guide provides information on CA 1 installation, initial configuration and deployment to shorten the learning curve for staff who are responsible for the installation and management of this product. Health Checker: The Mainframe 2.0 Health Checker provides CA 1 Health Checks that execute under the IBM Health Checker for z/os. CA 1 provides 15 health checks to inspect parameter settings and to monitor active processes for possible problems. When problems are found, the CA 1 checks provide detailed recommendations on how to correct the problem. The CA 1 Health Checks also make best practice recommendations for using CA 1, telling the user how to implement the best practice. 2

3 Examples of CA 1 Health Checks include: Monitoring the Tape Management Catalog (TMC) to insure that there is no shortage of DSNB records used to track secondary files on tape Inspecting CA 1 security settings to insure that tape resources are properly protected Identifying possible problems related to tape label processing or mixing expiration dates for tapes containing multiple files What s new in r12 Enhancements in this release include: Increase the number of DSNB records: This release of CA 1 provides for an increase in the number of DSNB records in the TMC. CA 1 now supports up to 16,750,000 DSNBs. This provides constraint relief for data centers having to retain tape data longer and to support increased media capacity. Health Check modifications: CA 1 Health Checks have been enhanced to provide record counts in addition to the percent of capacity fields presently displayed. Health Checks that scan the DSNB free chain have been updated to prevent them from running on more than one system at a time in a Sysplex environment, preserving system resources. In environments where CA Common Services r12 is also installed, the CA 1 Health Checks can now be run under the new CA Health Checker Common Service address space, eliminating the need to run the Common Tape System CTS task for health check support. New system options to replace USERMODS: These changes greatly simplify the process of installing and customizing new releases of CA 1. Customization tasks that required an SMP/E USER MOD in the past may now be accomplished by specifying a new system options parameter. Several obsolete parameters have also been removed from the system options. New tape map utility: A new tape mapping utility is provided to create a convenient report showing the contents of a CA 1-controlled or foreign tape volume, including many file details and creation information. The utility, CTSTMAP, can be executed as a subtask of the CTS address space or directly in batch using sample JCL provided. 3

4 Additional CA 1 product features include: Automated tape life cycle management: CA 1 manages all aspects of tape handling through flexible retention, extensive vaulting capabilities, and efficient tape cycling to and from one or more off-site locations. Complete data protection: Extensive integrity checking ensures complete tape data protection. (Tape data is written only when intended, preventing tapes from being accidentally overwritten.) Automated tape copy utility: The CA Copycat Utility makes tape-to-tape copy possible while retaining the data set attributes on the CA 1database. It is available as a separate licensable product and activated via license keys. The product is essential for hardware and software conversions, media consolidations, and electronic vaulting, and can also be used to migrate physical tapes into a virtual tape system. FIGURE A. Integrates with Web-based and Windows-based CA Graphical Management Interface (CA GMI) This no-cost feature brings a common user interface, either Web-based or Windows-based, to the power of CA 1, providing access to the Tape Management Catalog (TMC), Audit data set and configuration settings, providing detailed tape information on tape resources. In addition, CA GMI allows many of the capabilities and value of CA Vantage Storage Resource Manager to be at the fingertips of CA 1 users. The Windows-based CA GMI object tree integrates with the CA 1 interface. Unify and simplify tape storage management operations 4

Flexible security: Controls access to all aspects of CA 1 tape processing, using standard z/os System Authorization Facility (SAF) calls to external security systems, such as CA Top Secret for z/os, CA ACF2 for z/os, and IBM RACF. Integration with CA Vtape to pre-stage virtual volumes: This integration provides prestaging of secondary virtual volumes into cache during initial OPEN processing of volume 1, when the virtual volume has been externalized and no longer resides in cache. This integration reduces run times for CA Vtape Virtual Tape System when reading multivolume externalized data sets and also increases productivity. Real-time tape data set expiration reduces TMC maintenance: CA 1 can assign expiration dates in real time as tape files are created. The CA 1 Retention Data Set (RDS) that defines tape data set expiration information may optionally be read into memory and referenced as tape files are created. As the expiration rules are matched, the expiration information in the CA 1 Tape Management Catalog is updated. CA Service Desk integration: Automatically creates transactions for significant CA 1 events or problems that are logged in CA Service Desk, providing a combined mainframe and distributed problem tracking system. 5

6 Distributed tape support offers an enterprise view of tapes: Provides the ability to track tapes created by backup products, such as CA ARCserve Backup and Veritas NetBackup. The functionality includes the ability to extract media information from the backup product catalog and to create shadow entries in the CA 1 Tape Management Catalog. Automatic pointers error correction: This feature replaces a batch pointer s checker utility with a started task that can report on and repair pointer s errors in real time, or optionally, to only report the errors and generate update transactions to be processed by existing CA 1 Tape Management Catalog update and repair utilities. In addition, changes to the ISPF application are provided to move the pointer s fields from the general volume and Data Set Name Block (DSNB) update screens to a new screen that can be secured separately. This will allow you to limit the number of people performing pointers updates. Tracking World Wide ID for IBM 3592 WORM media: This feature provides support for tracking the World Wide ID (WW ID), and write mount count associated with IBM 3592 WORM (write once- read-many) media. CA 1 will verify the WW ID and mount count as these tapes are read and written and will identify tapes that may have been written to outside of CA 1 control. CA 1 will extend the basic IBM support for 3592 WORM media by preventing mixing WORM and non-worm media in multi-volume files. Support for 64k files on a volume: The maximum file sequence number support has increased from 32,767 to 65,535 for certain applications that stack more than 32,767 files on a tape or cartridge. Improved vaulting support: Lets you assign a vault location to virtual volumes based on the rules in the Vault Pattern Dataset (VPD). While a dummy slot number of is assigned (since a virtual volume cannot actually occupy a slot), the correct vault location is also assigned. This allows you to ensure that virtual volumes required for DR processing were actually shipped to a vault. Conversion utilities: Conversion utilities are provided for ease of use in converting from the following Tape Management systems to CA 1: Allen Systems Group ASG-Zara for Automated Tape Management BMC CONTROL-M/Tape CA TLMS Tape Management IBM DFSMSrmm 6
