DR. GABRIELE HEINEN-KLJAJIĆ Lower Saxony Minister of Science and Culture PROF. DR. IUR. VOLKER EPPING President of Leibniz Universität Hannover Dear athletes, teams and guests, Rowing is a water sport which is close to nature. It requires strength, endurance, team spirit and dynamism. Boats must cover the course between the starting and finishing lines as quickly as possible over various distances, with differing crew numbers and different athletes. This highlights the wide diversity of the sport of rowing. My thanks go to Leibniz Universität Hannover and to the Hannover Regatta Association, which this year are co-staging the 9th European Universities Rowing Championships in Hannover, the Capital of City of Lower Saxony. The rowing regatta will be held in the very heart of the city on Lake Maschsee and will also feature an attractive supporting programme, which will present Hannover to an international public as a unique centre for science and sport. This sports competition stimulates cultural exchange, not only among the competitors but also among the more than 200 volunteers and 30 attachés, who are mostly students at Leibniz Universität; I would also like to express my thanks to these supporters. I look forward to welcoming around 600 participants from 79 universities located in 18 European countries. This is a record level of participation. I wish all participants great success and memorable experiences and hope that we as spectators will be treated to exciting race days. But Hannover is also a sports city. More than 100,000 members in more than 350 sports clubs are provided with numerous possibilities to do sport. The shore areas of Lake Maschsee invite for jogging, hiking, skating, and cycling, with the lake itself offering plenty of possibilities of doing water sports. Many rowing clubs are based here. With national and international regattas taking place time and again, the EUC Rowing fits outstandingly into this line. I would like to thank Leibniz Universität and Hannover Regatta Association for organising this high-class event. ORGANISING COMMITTEE The Organising Committee (OC) of the 9th EUC Rowing is recruited from among the staff of the Department of Academic Sports Services and students of Leibniz Universität Hannover, the board of the Hannover Regatta Association as well as event-experienced male and female rowers from Hannover s rowing clubs and former Olympic athletes. The 20-member team puts a high emphasis on creating an unforgettable event for all participants at a unique regatta course! Having recently organised several federal leagues races and the German University Championship on Lake Maschsee, the team has demonstrated its capabilities of managing rowing regattas of this kind. The head of the OC consists of Michaela Röhrbein and Rolf-Dieter Mummenthey (ErDe), who will master the challenge of organising the event with plenty of experi- ence from former regatta and sport events. They coordinate all other departments, which are responsible for the sports competition, protocol, marketing and sponsoring, logistic or finances. While some members of the team rely on their excellent organisational skills and experience from former major sports events, some team members can work in their first-hand experience from their own rowing careers. Among the ranks of our OC are some former top-rowers, who can look back on impressive careers: Michael Ruhe, who is responsible for everything that concerns the immediate competition, was part of the German national rowing team from 1997 until 2007 and participated in the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004. Another Olympic athlete is Christina Hennings, who was in Beijing in 2008. Being part of the the German national team for nine years, she won the Word Championships silver medal in the Eight 2006. For the EUC Rowing, she is responsible for acquiring sponsors. They are joined by Elke Hipler, who will contribute her expertise to the development of the competition schedule. From 1995 until 2008 she, too, was in the German national rowing team catching six World Championships Medals and participating in the Olympics twice. The OC s closest advisor is Jens Hundertmark. He is Technical Delegate for rowing in the German University Sports Federation. Together with the former world champion Uwe Maerz, Jens coordinates the German University Championship (DHM) in which more than 500 male and female rowers participate annually. Since 2005 the team coordinates the delegations of athletes to the European Universities Rowing Championships. Not least the perspective to participate in an international championship has lead to a qualitative and quantitative reinforcement of the German University Championship. Over the past decade rowing has become the biggest sport in adh and the most succesful by international results. Rowing experience or not, all members of the team are highly motivated to turn the EUC Rowing into a successful competition. In order to run a smooth event, the OC gets the support and the high commitment of nearly 200 volunteers and 30 attachés! 9 18 EUC TH EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015 19

With 26 athletes, Leibniz Universität Hannover provides the biggest team for the competition. 17 male and 9 female Hannoverian athletes have qualified for their home match, including the flagship of every regatta, the Men s Eight. The team has worked hard under the eyes of their coach Henri Kuper, who is excited for this year s EUC Rowing to take place in Hannover: We are especially looking forward to exciting races as well as the intercultural exchange between athletes from all nations. Our expectations are, of course, heightened because the EUC Rowing is held not only in our country but in our home town. We want to give our best, not just for ourselves but also to show our friends and fans that we can keep pace with the European competition. Still, it is not easy to assess the field. It may be an advantage that we have had plenty of opportunities to train on Lake Maschsee because we know the regatta course and the venue. But the strong English teams always have to be reckoned with because rowing has top priority in university sports there. Also, Poland has been strongly positioned lately, particularly in the Men s Eight. It s hard to estimate whether we ll have chances for medals, but it s our goal, of course. THE OPERA HOUSE THE OLD TOWN THE HERRENHAUSEN GARDENS SIGHTSEEING FOR PARTICIPANTS Built in the mid-19th century, the Opera House originally served as the royal theatre. Right next to the central place of the city centre, the Kröpcke, the neo-classical building is the location for many concerts, ballets and opera productions and home of one of the most prestigious ensembles of Germany. The traditional half-timbered buildings are the last witnesses of medieval Hannover. As the former city centre was destroyed by the firestorms of the Second World War, these buildings are the remnants of the old townscape which were relocated in the reconstruction process of the city. The striking Market Church and the Old Town Hall are the southernmost examples of North-German brick Gothic. The two-kilometer avenue Georgengarten is leading up to the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen with the rebulit Herrenhausen Palace. Originally created by Electress Sophia as the Grand Jardin de la Leine and inspired by the Sun King Louis XIV, the Great Garden is the best preserved baroque park in Europe. On Friday, September 11 different sightseeing events like a guided stadium tour or a city tour are offered. A time schedule is available at the Team Information Centre. For taking part in one of these activities, please come to the counter at the catering tent half an hour before the activity begins. Please note that the capacity is limited places will be assigned on first come first serve basis. 38 EUC 39
