PART 1 - SECTION A ABOUT THE ABBEY THEATRE: The Abbey Theatre is Ireland s national theatre. Our founders W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory had the vision to bring upon the stage the deeper thoughts and emotions of Ireland. This mission is alive and well today in our exciting mix of new and classic plays and through our relationships with Ireland s leading playwrights including Marina Carr, Frank Mc Guinness, Tom Murphy and a new generation of writers such as Richard Dormer, Stacey Gregg, Nancy Harris and Elaine Murphy. The Abbey Theatre produces a year round programme of work both on and off stage, with the priority to create work of excellence, which not only showcases Irish and international drama but also engages with the artistic and civic life of contemporary Ireland. We tour nationally and internationally to reach new audiences. We pride ourselves on being ambassadors for Irish theatre and culture. We nurture Irish artists through our artistic development programme and a dedication to discovering new acting, writing and directing talent. We bring the magic of theatre into Irish class-rooms and communities through our education programmes to ensure that the Irish theatre tradition is preserved and progressed for generations to come.
