Rooflights Purilan Skylight For light in the loft The Purilan range of skylights for tiled and slated roofs has been developed to combine high performance and ease of installation. 25-75 roof pitches Double or single glazed Tile, slate and shingle roof coverings Space-saving top hung opening light Quick release window stay fastening Integral flashing Factory assembled components Special external locking units for outside to inside access The Purilan skylight is a plastics framed component complete with top hung opening double or single glazed light. The integral lower flashing (1.3mm lead for Purilan UNV and sheet aluminium for Purilan L models) removes the need for a separate, difficult-to-seal site joint between frame and flashing for most situations, thus providing for easier installations. The casement stay is designed to hold the skylight casement in three positions it may also be released from the frame for even wider opening. Units with the suffix E are external locking with a single barrel lock. Purilan skylights are ideal where ventilation and light are required via the pitched roof finish. With specialist units for both slated and tiled roofs and the choice of single and double glazing, they are suitable for workrooms or hobby areas and for corridors and stairwells. The Purilan is also particularly suited for the replacement of cast iron skylights. The external locking units are produced for situations where a pitched roof is added to an existing flat roof and services requiring maintenance are then isolated in the newly created roof void. The fixing points are designed to eliminate any water leakage as are the interlocks between strips. It should be noted that some cellular PVC-u fascia boards cannot take vertical fixings. In such cases the system may be fixed through its underlay support into a batten fixed to the rafters behind the fascia board. However, space must be left between the back of the fascia board and the fixing batten to allow air to pass into the roof void. In full boarded roofs, a section of boarding immediately behind the fascia should be removed to allow air to pass into the roof void. At hips and valleys, the system should be sawn to form tight fitting mitred joints. To prevent possible leakage at valleys, a flashing of underlay material should be positioned under the joint to discharge into the gutter. In a parapet/valley gutter situation in the absence of a fascia, it may be possible to introduce a timber fillet on which the system can be fixed. When installing OFVS, due allowance must be made for the height of the It may be necessary to use gutter spacers with OFVS25 & OFVS25/L to prevent rainwater overshoot. OFVS products should be used in conjunction with insulation inhibitor trays to ensure a clear airway into the roof void See page 16 and 17. Polypropylene. OFVS10 & OFVS25 have integral bird excluder and are for use with profiled tiles. OFVS10/L & OFVS25/L: flat tiles and slates. Black. 15

For roof space ventilation to comply with building regulations, abutment vents are easily installed and are hidden under the flashing. Abutment Vents The following are the free ventilation areas of the units and the spacings necessary to achieve the equivalent of 5mm of continuous ventilation: LTV Lean-to Roof Vent The Ubbink Lean-to Abutment Vent is an interlocking system which provides a continuous 5mm of ventilation where a monopitch roof abuts a wall. Each strip of LTV provides 900mm working length. The spacers provided are positioned behind a batten which is fixed to the wall above the abutment joint. This allows the ventilation introduced by the LTV strip to pass behind this batten into the roof void. A lead strip is attached to the front of the batten and dressed down over the roof finish. The LTV vented strip is nailed to the top of the batten. A further strip of lead is raggled into the nearest mortar joint above the fitted strip, dressed down over the LTV and held tight to it by the integral stainless steel clips. Polypropylene, with coated stainless steel clips and nylon spacers. Where a pitched tiled or slated roof meets a wall. Black. Metal Mono Vent The Metal Mono Vent provides the equivalent of a continuous 5mm of ventilation where a monopitch roof abuts a wall. Metal Mono Vents are available in two sizes: 345mm long x 150mm wide x 19mm deep for use with rafters at 400mm centres 545mm long x 150mm wide x 19mm deep for use with rafters at 600mm centres 345mm long 5,440mm 2 every 1 metre (adjusted to nearest rafter spacings) 545mm long 8,640mm 2 every 1.7 metres (adjusted to nearest rafter spacings) These units are V-shaped funnels which incorporate an integral expanded metal insect inhibitor. Installation is by slotting into place between the rafters and the abutment joint is then weathered by a lead flashing strip which is raggled into the mortar joint above the abutment and dressed onto the Metal Mono Vent. The gap between the underside of the vent and roof finish should be sealed. Powder coated galvanised steel. Where a pitched tiled or slated roof abuts a wall. Black. 19
Roofing Accessories EPS Eaves Protection All of our roofing accessories are designed for easy installation. They help to protect the roof and roof space from the impact of weathering and improve ease of maintenance. BCF55 Bird Comb Filler Sim-Fix Slate Strap The Ubbink Eaves Protection System is designed for use in both refurbishment projects and new build to provide an effective level of eaves protection. The 1.5m rigid pre-formed strips are suitable for use in roof pitches of 15 to 70. On existing buildings EPS can be used to replace rotted gutter felt with the minimum of disruption to the existing slate or tile roof covering. In new build situations, the preformed EPS strip directs water away from the underlay and into the gutter. At the same time it provides an effective underlay support flap, preventing ponding of the underlay behind the fascia board. EPS is ideal for use with the new generation of lightweight, high performance underlays, which are not suitable for forming a drip into the gutter. EPS is fixed to the top of the fascia with clout nails. If a plastic fascia is used which will not support clout nails, EPS may be fixed to a batten behind the fascia. PVC-u. Innovative technology in the development of underlays allows improved ventilation of the roof space as well as greater protection against wind, rain and snow. Vapour Permeable Underlays Both warm and cold roof construction. Grey on the external side. Multivap 300 Multivap 300 breather underlay provides outstanding protection against winddriven rain and water infiltration. Yet its vapour permeable surface allows moisture vapour to escape, helping to keep interiors condensation free. CONDENSATION With modern standards of insulation it is necessary to dispel the accumulation of moisture vapour in occupied buildings. In principle, ventilation dispels moisture and stops condensation forming. The first line of defence is a vapour control layer on the warm side of the insulation. However water vapour can occur and must be dealt with. Multivap 300 with its high vapour permeability allows vapour to pass freely through to evaporate in the atmosphere. INSTALLATION ON PARTIALLY SUPPORTED COLD ROOFS Multivap 300 should be draped over the rafters to allow any water ingress through tiles to drain down to the gutter. Overlaps must be provided with the minimum dimensions given in the following table. Roof Pitch Horizontal Lap(mm) Vertical Lap Partially Fully (mm) Supported Supported 12.5-14 225 150 100 15-34 150 100 100 35 + 100 75 100 A prefabricated gutter drip must be used with Multivap Ubbink Eaves Protection System see page 20, or Over Fascia Ventilation System see page 15, are suitable. For sealing overlaps or junctions with adjoining materials, use Ubiflex Tack Sealant. Multivap 300 is manufactured by the lamination of a water vapour permeable film between two layers of non-woven polypropylene spunbond to form a flexible breather membrane for supported or unsupported applications. On fully supported warm roofs or sealed systems, counter battens should be installed over Multivap to allow drainage under the tile battens. For fuller guidance please refer to Ubbink technical information. The OFT/1 and OFT/4 are suitable for use with soil & vent systems and for both mechanical and natural (passive) ventilation installations. The OFT/1F has an integral plastic flange for installation in built-up felt roofs and the OFT/1A has an integral collar and separate aluminium flange to withstand the high temperature during installation in asphalt roofs. The OFT/4 has a special low air resistance cowl the pressure/airflow resistance is <1.0 pascal at 225m 3 /h. The pipework above the roofline is twin walled and incorporates an integral condensation drain. The stack pipe has an integral collar and separate aluminium flange for use with both felt and asphalt. OFT/1F: polyethylene. OFT/1A & OFT/4: polyethylene/ aluminium. Suitable for built up felt and asphalt. For single ply membranes, please consult Ubbink. Flat Roof Vents FRV/FRVA FRV FRVA Ubiflex Flashing The FRV & FRVA Flat Roof Vents are 480mm interlocking strips which provide a continuous 25mm of ventilation to the perimeter of a flat roof. The strips have an integral inhibitor to keep out large insects and vermin. The FRV is fitted to the top of the fascia at the edge of the roof and allowance must be made for the depth of the product when siting the fascia/gutter. The unit is nailed to the top of the fascia and the weathering flap is then dressed into the felted finish. Where a flat felted roof abuts a wall, 25mm spacers must be fitted behind the vertical board/felting where it meets the wall. The FRVA is fixed to the top of the board, Ubiflex is then dressed into the mortar joint above the fitted product and then dressed down over the FRVA and held down with the integral lead support clip. FRV: polypropylene. FRVA: polypropylene with coated stainless steel clip. FRV and FRVA are suitable for use in most flat roof finishes. Not suitable for use with asphalt. Black. 34
Vapour Control Layers VCL-265 Ubbink VCL-265 is a 0.265mm thick, impermeable, three layered membrane. It incorporates a white, high density polypropylene reinforcement grid sandwiched between two layers of clear polyethylene sheet. APPLICATIONS Ubbink VCL-265 is designed to prevent the risk of roof failure caused by the build-up of condensation within the roof structure. VCL-265 is suitable for: low slope, insulated, twin skin, metal sheet roofs low slope, insulated, built-up, metal roofs acoustic metal roofs insulated wall cladding single ply membrane roofs of the thermal insulation while ensuring the vapour resistance of the construction reduces progressively from inside to outside. SEALING It is essential that VCL-265 is continuous throughout the roof and all laps are sealed, including at abutments, rooflights, penetrations, gutters, ridge etc. Laps should be min. 150mm and sealed with 15mm wide UbiSeal doublesided sealant tape. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION Composition: reinforced low density polyethylene with a white polypropylene reinforcement grid Water vapour resistance: 507MN.s.g-1 Tensile strength: 690N Roll size: 2.0m x 50m Thickness: 0.265mm Reflect 350 VCL Reflect 350 VCL is a multi layered, high performance, reinforced polyethylene and aluminium foil membrane. This layered build up produces a membrane which has an exceptionally high water vapour resistance, is tough and very strong and will resist the kind of damage that can happen all too easily on building sites. For further protection the aluminium foil is also covered with an extra layer of polyethylene. Reflect 350 is designed for use in buildings with a high water vapour content, such as swimming pools, spa s, leisure centers and wet process plants. Reflect 350 should be installed and sealed in the same way as VCL 265. (see previous details) CONTROL OF CONDENSATION Condensation occurs when the air temperature falls to the dewpoint temperature and the air becomes saturated. Risks will be higher in colder external climates and in buildings such as swimming pools, laundries or some food processing plant, that operate at high internal humidities. The most effective way to avoid condensation in roofs is to prevent as much of the water vapour as possible reaching the cold side of the thermal insulation. This can be achieved by providing a Ubbink VCL-265 layer on the warm side TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION Composition: Multi layered, reinforced polyethylene and aluminium foil. Water vapour resistance: 43,000 MNs/g Tensile strength: 7.3KN/M Roll size: 2m x 50m Thickness: 0.350 mm Weight: 310g/ m² 35
Timber Frame Breather Membrane & Heat Reflecting Membrane Frame-Protect Thermo-Foil Eco-Brite Frame-Protect is a high performance polypropylene breather membrane especially produced to protect timber and metal frame walls. APPLICATION Frame-Protect is installed on the cold side of the frame and stapled to the sheathing board with stainless steel staples. It will give weather proof protection to the construction during the building process and until the external cladding is installed. Frame- Protect has a very high permeability which allows water vapour to pass freely through to the cavity, where it can safely disperse. When installing, ensure the lower timbers are covered. Lap the membrane by 100mm horizontally, 150mm vertically and external corners by 300mm. Upper layers should overlap the lower to ensure there is no ingress of water. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION Water vapour transmission: 2,000 g/m² - 24 Tensile strength: 215N Roll size: 2.7m x 50m Weight: 100g /M² Ubbink Thermo-Foil provides a costeffective, two-sided HRM for use as a heat reflective lining for commercial industrial buildings and sports venues etc. This tough product has been specifically engineered to withstand the rigour of site work. With a low moisture transmission rate of less than 0.021g/m 2 Ubbink Thermo-Foil also acts as an excellent vapour control layer. Conveniently installed within a home s ceilings, walls and floors, Eco-Brite enhances the efficiency of other insulating products included within structures. Eco-Brite stops warm or cold air migrating through the insulation, blocking unwanted air-infiltration and eliminating moisture migration. Costeffective and clean to handle, Eco-Brite is a tough yet flexible triple-layered, lowemissivity Heat Reflecting Membrane that will greatly improve the insulating performance of a home and reduces the energy cost to the occupier for heating or cooling by up to 30%.
