3 Installation & Use 3 Installation & Use The Infinity WF scanners (WF 36, WF 42, and WF 48) can be installed and used in multiple ways. One of the many features of the Infinity WF is that it can be connected to and operated over a wide area network (WAN) with or without an Internet connection. This is not a requirement, however. Infinity WF scanners can also be connected and operated using a dedicated host PC, or the Touch Screen located on the scanner itself. This section covers each of the various installation types; as well as the different methods for using the scanner. Note This manual uses the following terms: LAN and WAN. The definition for each of them in terms of use for this manual is: LAN (Local Area Network) scanner is accessible from a single, dedicated host PC using the supplied crossover cable WAN (Wide Area Network) scanner is connected to the network using an Ethernet cable and an IP address, and is accessible over that network from any PC also on that network, with or without an Internet connection. 3.1 Installation The Infinity WF scanner can be installed using one of two methods: The Touch Screen located on the scanner A host PC connected to the scanner with the supplied crossover cable, using the Infinity WF s Web-based Interface Touch Screen Installation The Touch Screen has an easy-to-use menu for installing the scanner for use on a WAN. For detailed instructions on how to install the scanner on a WAN using the Touch Screen, go to: 4.1.1 Self Test 1 Screen, IP Address (Network Setup) in this manual. It is; however, recommended that section 3.3 Ready for Use be reviewed first. Crossover Cable (Host PC) Installation The Infinity WF scanner does not require network configuration if it is to be used for scanning using a single, dedicated host PC, and the scanned images are to be saved directly to that PC (images could also be saved directly to USB if the USB option is installed on the scanner). Page 19 of 117
Infinity WF Operator Manual If being able to scan from more than one location is required and/or the scanned images are to be saved or sent to a location other than a host PC, the scanner needs to be configured for the WAN. This can be accomplished using a host PC with the supplied crossover cable, a valid network IP address, and the Infinity WF s Web-based Interface. To do this, see Network Configuration Button under 7.1.2.2 Base Settings in this manual. Figure 3.1: Using the crossover cable 3.2 Use (Scanning) Scanning with the Infinity WF can be accomplished using three different methods: Touch Screen; Host PC using the supplied crossover cable; and PC connected to the WAN with or without an Internet connection. Touch Screen Scanning can be accomplished on the Infinity WF directly from the scanner using the Touch Screen. It has an easy-to-use menu and helps the operator to control all scanner parameters with the touch of a finger. If the need arises to view a scanned image while operating the scanner from the Touch Screen, an external monitor can be attached to the scanner (see 5.3.4 Viewer Control for more information). For detailed instructions on to use the various functions and controls available from the Touch Screen, begin with section 4 Setup & Performance Optimization in this manual. It is; however, recommended that section 3.3 Ready for Use be reviewed first. Host PC with Crossover Cable If it is not required that the Infinity WF scanner be accessible from more than one PC, and the scanned images are to be saved directly to that PC and not saved/sent elsewhere, perform the following: Page 20 of 117
3 Installation & Use 1. Connect the PC to the scanner using the supplied crossover cable 2. Power ON the PC 3. Power ON the scanner 4. Using the Touch Screen on the scanner, go to the Main menu (see 3.3 Ready for Use) 5. Figure 5.12: Image Control 1 screen Increasing or decreasing the settings for each of the image control functions above can be done by: Tapping the + or buttons to change the setting in single increments/decrements (e.g. 50%, 51%, 52%, etc.) Tapping and holding the + or buttons while the settings increase or decrease by at least five single increments/decrements, at which time, the setting will then automatically increase or decrease by whole increments/decrements of 5 (e.g. 50%, 55%, 60%, etc.) Note Refer to 3.3.1 Using the Touch Screen for explanations of the navigational buttons on the Image Control 1 screen. Brightness The Brightness control defines the resulting brightness of the image. A lower value results in darker images, a higher value results in brighter images. Note Setting the Brightness or Contrast control values close to either 0% or 100% may result in unwanted artifacts. Contrast The Contrast control defines the contrast of the image. A lower value results in an image that is smoother, a higher value shows more details and the image will become crisper. Gamma The Gamma control defines the gamma correction used by the scanner cameras. A value of 1.6 is a good approximation. The range of values are from 0 (no gamma) to 2.5 (maximum gamma). A higher gamma value shows more details in darker areas and compresses bright areas. Page 42 of 117
5 Main Menu Sharpness The Sharpness control applies an automatic sharpening algorithm to the image before any other operation is performed. A zero setting disables the function. A very high setting may produce artifacts, depending on the document characteristics. Resolution The Resolution control defines the scanner s resolution. The standard resolution settings are: 150; 200; 240; 300; 400; 460; 600; 800; 1000; and 1200; however, the setting can also be increased/decreased as described above in single increments/decrements or in increments/decrements of 5. To cycle through and select a standard resolution, tap the numeric value displayed in the middle of the Resolution button (Figure 5.12 shows a numeric value of 200 ). Color Mode The Color Mode parameter defines the color mode if scanning in color or the algorithm used for binarization in binary mode. The Color mode button includes the options to scan in 24bit Color, 8bit Color, Grayscale, Binary, or Photo. This control also influences the compression method that is offered in the File Control screen. Infinity WF Operator Manual 5.6 File Control The controls for the file format are set via the File Control screen. This screen is accessed by tapping the File Control button found on the Main menu. Tap the File format button to cycle through and set the file format to be used when scanning. Once the file format is set, the compression methods can also be set. The list of formats includes JPEG (factory default), PNM, TIFF, and PDF. Depending on the color mode, some file formats may not be offered. Whatever value the File Format button is set to dictates what other functionality or control is viewable and ultimately available on this screen, meaning the available selections may vary. A few of the sub-settings can also change what controls are viewable/available as well. File format: JPEG The file format of a scanned image will be JPEG when this value is selected. Figure 5.17: File format: JPEG From the resulting screen, the JPEG quality button is available. Tap the - or + area of the JPEG quality button to set the quality of the scanned image. A higher percentage means a better quality image, but also a larger file size. A lower percentage may result in an image containing noise or artifacts, but the file size will also be smaller. The Prev. quality button (preview quality) is used to set the preview quality of the JPEG file (scanned image). A higher percentage gives better quality, but the data size will increase. A lower percentage will show some artifacts, but the data size will be reduced. Increasing or decreasing the setting for the JPEG quality and Prev. quality is done by: Tapping the + or buttons to change the setting in single increments/decrements (e.g. 76%, 77%, 78%, etc.) Tapping and holding the + or buttons while the settings increase or decrease by at least five single increments/decrements, at which time the setting will then automatically increase or decrease by whole increments/decrements of 5 (e.g. 80%, 85%, 90%, etc.) The Prev. scale button is used to control the preview scale factor. Higher values result in smaller previews; lower values will produce larger previews, but take more time to send and display. The default setting for Prev. scale is 1:6. Page 48 of 117
5 Main Menu The available settings for Prev. scale range from 1:1 to 1:64. The setting can be increased to decreased by tapping the + or buttons found on the Prev. scale button. If the + or buttons are tapped and then held while the setting increases or decreases by at least five single increments/decrements, the setting will then automatically increase or decrease by whole increments/decrements of 5 (e.g. 1:5, 1:10, 1:15, etc.). File format: PNM The file format of a scanned image will be PNM when this value is selected. Figure 5.18: File format: PNM "PNM" or portable anymap covers six variations of portable bit/gray/pixel maps, (PBM, PGM, and PPM) whether ASCII or binary. There are no compression options offered at this time. From the resulting screen, the Prev. quality and Prev. scale buttons are available. The Prev. quality button (preview quality) is used to set the preview quality of the PNM file (scanned image). A higher percentage gives better quality, but the data size will increase. A lower percentage will show some artifacts, but the data size will be reduced. Review the bulleted instructions on how to increase and decrease the Prev. quality setting found under File Format: JPG above. Reference File Format: JPG above for a description of the Prev. scale button. File format: TIFF The file format of a scanned image will be TIFF when this value is selected. 6 How to Scan a Document 6 How to Scan a Document The purpose of this section is to instruct the operator on how to perform a basic scan using the Touch Screen, and to provide general operating tips (things you should know). Things You Should Know The Infinity WF Scanner is designed as a scan-from-center device. This means that at least some part of the document being scanned must be placed on the center of the scan table (Figure 6.1) Center Top of Scanner Top of Scan Table Document to be scanned From Center Figure 6.1: Scan document placement (center) The Infinity WF has the available option of a Foot Pedal. The Foot Pedal is used by the operator to issue a scan command instead of using the Touch Screen. Foot Pedals can be purchased through a BBH Authorized Spare Parts Reseller (ASPR). A complete listing of ASPRs can be found on the BBH web site at: www.bbhscanners.com The following instructions assume that the scanner has already been properly installed and set up for use. To scan a document, perform the following: 1. Power ON the scanner (see 1.6.1 Powering ON/OFF) 2. Tap the Touch Screen when prompted (Figure 3.1). After the scanner runs through and completes the start sequence the Main menu will be displayed (see 3.3 Ready for Use for more information) 3. Set the scan-to-location (see 5.1 Scan to Location) 4. Position the document to be scanned on the scan table as close to center as possible (Figure 6.1). Page 57 of 117
Infinity WF Operator Manual 5. Slowly feed the document (slide the document forward) into the scanner s transport until the scanner automatically grabs and pulls the document further into the transport. The scanner will adjust the forward position of the document (not the center position) by moving it slightly forward, then backward 6. Once the scanner is done automatically positioning the document to be scanned, tap the Scan button located in the Main menu displayed on the Touch Screen Figure 6.2: Scan button The scanner will then move the document forward into the transport and scan it. The location of the scanned image is dependent on what the scan-to-location is set to. Once the scanner is finished scanning the document, the scanner will either move the document through the transport and deposit it into the media output tray or move it back out of the transport onto the scan table. Where the scanner deposits a scanned document is dictated by what the Doc. Output control is set to. Page 58 of 117
7 Web-based Interface 7 Infinity Web-based Interface Figure 7.1: Web-based interface Home Page The Web-based Interface created for the Infinity WF scanners (specifically the Home Page) is used to launch the Web-based Scan Application (Launch Scan Application button), access the part of the interface where various scanner setup controls reside (Setup Device button), and where the scanner properties can be viewed (Information button), specifically the device type, scanner serial number, current scanner firmware, scanner network settings, Energy Star settings, and a list of any installed options. Figure 7.26: Installed Options screen 7.1.2.4 Adjustments & Support Section Whenever the Infinity WF is setup for the first time, moved to a different location, cleaned or serviced and/or after a firmware update; some adjustments have to be performed to guarantee maximum quality and accuracy. These adjustments can be found in the Adjustments & Support section of the Poweruser s Setup Device screen and are accessible through the four available buttons: Adjustments; Log Files; Scan Test Targets; and Network Analyzer. Figure 7.27: Setup Device screen Poweruser Page 74 of 117
7 Web-based Interface Adjustments Button Clicking the Adjustments button displays the White Balance Adjustment screen, from which the Poweruser can perform a White Balance adjustment and adjust the Brightness Correction. Figure 7.28: White Balance Adjustments screen White Balance The White Balance adjustment is most important for consistent image quality. It starts with the overall sensitivity of the scanner being adjusted by sending the maximum amount of bright white light directly into the camera. This produces a signal with the largest (light) spectral array possible. The scanner then adjusts for any variation in lighting. The adjustment is done to correct the uneven light distribution on the CCD that may be caused by any imbalance of the lamps; any ambient light introduced; any imperfections of the lens; and/or any other factors that need to be compensated for. The final measurement results in a correction function which levels the brightness over the complete scan width. The White Balance adjustment uses the white balance calibration sheet as the scan test target to define the White Balance. A single white balance calibration sheet is supplied with the scanner. It is made of special reflective paper which diffuses the light. If the white balance calibration sheet has dirt, wrinkles or anything visible to the human eye on it, the CCD will also see this and will overcompensate in these areas. Although the internal software has been programmed to eliminate these imperfections to a certain degree, it still leads to unreliable results if the white balance calibration sheet is not of the defined quality. Figure 7.29: White Balance Calibration sheet With time the White Balance Calibration Sheet can become faded and the quality of the surface, including the brightness of the white color, may give a poor calibration. Therefore, it is recommended that the White Balance Calibration Sheet be kept in an air tight package and out of any direct light or sunlight. This will prolong its effectiveness for use. Consequently, it is expected that any scans of white paper having different property values than that of the White Balance Calibration Sheet will result in brightness and possibly color shifts. Note BBH recommends replacement of the white balance calibration sheet every 2 years for optimum calibration performance. Should the sheet be damaged, wrinkled, lost, or otherwise become unusable, a replacement can be purchased by contacting BBH Sales at 1-800-SCAN-494 or from our web site: www.bbhscanners.com. 8 Web-based Scan Application Figure 8.3: Options tab Paper Feed Delay The Paper Feed Delay control allows the operator to specify a delay time which controls when the transport automatically grabs and positions a document that is placed in it (for more information on this control, see Feeder Delay under 6.7 Transport Control in this manual). Transport Speed The Transport Speed control reduces the transport speed, which is significant when scanning fragile documents (for more information on this control, see Transport under 6.7 Transport Control in this manual). Document Output The Document Output control dictates where a document is placed after it is scanned (for more information on this control, see Doc. Output under 6.7 Transport Control in this manual). Scan Mode The Scan Mode control dictates the quality of the scanned image. The two options are High Quality and Fast (for more information on this control, see Scan Mode under 6.7 Transport Control in this manual) Preview Scale The Preview Scale control is used to specify the preview scale factor. Higher values result in smaller previews; and lower values will produce larger previews, but take more time to send and display. The available settings for the Prev. scale are Auto and a range from 1:1 to 1:64. If set to Auto, the function will perform a best fit before the image is displayed on the screen. The default setting for Prev. scale is 1:6. Note The Auto option is not available from the Touch Screen. Page 85 of 117

A higher percentage gives better quality, but the data size will increase. A lower percentage will show some artifacts, but the data size will be reduced. section 7.1.2.3 Updates & Uploads Section - Installing ICC Profiles in this manual. In addition, there is an Options link that opens a separate window where the metadata is entered. Image Rotation The Image Rotation function allows for the scanned image to be rotated before processed to view, and/or output to a file. The choices are None (0 ) (equates to Off setting via the Touch Screen), 90, 180, and 270. The default value is None (0 ). Embedded ICC Profiles The Embedded ICC Profiles control is either Yes or No. For further information, see section 7.1.2.3 Updates & Uploads Section - Installing ICC Profiles in this manual. Embedded Metadata The Embedded Metadata control is either Yes or No. For further information, see Mirror Figure 8.4 The Mirror control activates the horizontal mirroring of the image. It can be useful if scanning a transparency or a blueprint from the back side. The available settings are OFF, and Horizontal. 8.1.1.2 Properties Tab Clicking on the Properties tab displays a screen from which format and controls can be set that affect the scanned image or file. Page 86 of 117
8 Web-based Scan Application Figure 8.5: Properties tab Color Mode The Color Mode control defines the color mode if scanning in color or the algorithm used for binarization in binary mode. The choices are: 24bit color; 8bit color; Binary; Grayscale; and Photo. There are some interdependencies between this control and the File Format settings (e.g. a File Format of PNM is available from the drop down list when a Color Mode of 24bit Color is selected. Selecting a File Format of PNM; however, automatically changes the Color Mode to Grayscale). File Format The File Format designates the format that is used to store a scan file. There are some interdependencies between this control and the Color Mode settings. In other words, there may be File Formats listed in 24bit Color Mode that, if selected, will change the Color Mode to something other than 24bit Color (e.g. select 24bit Color and then select PNM as the File Format. 24bit Color changes to Grayscale for the Color Mode). Below is a table (Figure 8.6) that outlines the available Color Mode/File Format combinations, as well as their available compression types. Whether or not Invert is an available function for the combination selected is also designated for the appropriate Color Mode setting. File JPEG Color Mode Format Quality % 24bit Color JPEG X TIFF Compression PDF Compression Invert Y/N 24bit Color TIFF X(None) Page 87 of 117
Infinity WF Operator Manual Color Mode File Format JPEG Quality % TIFF Compression 24bit Color TIFF X JPEG PDF Compression Invert Y/N 24bit Color PDF X (None) 8bit Color TIFF X(None) Grayscale JPEG X Grayscale PNM Binary TIFF CCITT G4 N Binary TIFF X(None) N Photo TIFF CCITT G4 Y/N Photo TIFF X(None) Y/N Figure 8.6: Color Mode and File Format interdependencies Compression There are two different fields related to compression: TIFF; and PDF. The availability of these compression types are dictated by the File Format selected, as are the selectable compression values or percentages related to each. For example, when specifying a file format of PDF and a color mode of 24bit color, the operator can select no PDF compression to be applied to the scanned image (None) or a JPEG compression to be applied. Resolution [DPI] The Resolution field allows the operator to set the desired resolution in two ways: by manually entering the resolution or DPI number (valid DPI values are between 150 and 1200); or by selecting the DPI from the drop down list provided. Confirm the input with the TAB key on the PC keyboard. If the manually entered resolution or DPI (number) does not match a number found in the drop down list provided, the selection of User-Defined is displayed in the field containing the drop down list. Stitching The Stitching function offers two settings: Fixed (Default); and Adaptive. Fixed stitching is used for normal scanning with the transport wings (see Appendix A). Adaptive stitching is used for uneven documents, crumpled documents, or when the transport wings are not used. Splitting Image The Splitting Image function splits a single image into two equal parts. This is useful when scanning one physical item with two separate images, such as a newspaper page that may contain two pages on one physical sheet. The different settings for Splitting Image are: Left: - The image is taken from the left side of the specified area. Right - The image is taken from the right side of the specified area. Auto - The image taken toggles between the two sides. The start side is defined in Splitting Start Page found under 7.1.1.2 User Settings. Page 88 of 117
8 Web-based Scan Application The resulting image s file name is autogenerated and consists of the word scan, the date and time the scan was requested, and a lowercase l (left) or r (right) depending on what the operator specified as the start page (e.g. scan_2008-04- 24_17-03-51r.jpg). To get an image of the opposite side, click the scan button again. Auto Density [Binary] The Auto density function detects the edges of a document only if they are surrounded by a dark background. This control specifies the density level used to decide whether a pixel belongs to the background or not. The default value is 40. Format The Format section allows the operator to select from a list of various standard paper formats. If the value of Auto is selected, the scanner scans the complete document and then crops the documents to its real size. This function is highly advanced and works with default values most of the time. Maximum Deskew [ ] The Maximum Deskew [ ] enables the operator to define the maximum degree of angle to use for the scanning application to attempt deskewing an image. The setting can be entered in the positive or negative direction of 0 degrees by using the slidebar, or typing the degree number (with a (-) for negative) directly into the setting field. Additional Margin [mil] Additional Margin [mil] is used to add or remove margin from the image. The margin is defined in units of mil (1/1000 inch). The desired value can be entered as a numeric value or by clicking on and pushing the slider to the desired value. Confirm the input with the TAB key on the PC keyboard. The default margin center is defined as 0. Document Edges Document Edges enables the operator to define an area on every side of the scanned image which is added (positive values) to the image, or which is removed (negative values) from the image. The units of measure available from the drop down list are: mil; inch; mm; cm; and pixel. 8.1.1.3 Camera Tab Clicking the Camera tab displays a screen from which various camera controls can be set. Note The controls Threshold, Despeckle, Exposure, and Color Gain (viewable in Figure 8.7) are only available (visible) when certain conditions are met (e.g. Threshold and Despeckle are available (visible) when the Color Mode and File Format in the Properties tab screen are set to Binary and Tiff, respectively. If, in the Properties tab, the Color Mode is set to 24bit and the File Format is set to JPEG, the Threshold and Despeckle controls will not appear on the Camera tab display screen. If the Color Mode in the Properties tab is set to Grayscale, the Color Gain control in the Camera tab screen will not be visible, etc.). Page 89 of 117
Infinity WF Operator Manual Figure 8.7: Camera Tab Brightness [%] The Brightness [%] setting is used to define the brightness of the scanned image. The desired value can be entered as a numeric value (confirm the input using the TAB key on the PC keyboard) or by clicking on and pushing the slider to the desired value. The default brightness setting is 50. Threshold The Threshold control expands the brightness range of the image to the maximum range of the scanner. This converts the darkest areas of the image to solid black and the brightest areas to solid white. Available only Binary mode, the two settings for thresholding are: Dynamic; and Fixed. Dynamic Threshold depends on the contents of the image; whereas Fixed Threshold is defined through the brightness setting. Despeckle Despeckle removes isolated black pixels that don t have any relation to their neighbors. Speckles exist only in binary files and are found in low contrast areas of documents. The available settings for Despeckle are OFF and 4x4 Positive. Contrast [%] The Contrast [%] slider defines the contrast of the resulting image. Higher contrast values show more details. If scanning in Binary mode or (binary) Photo, the behavior of the contrast slider changes. The desired value can be entered as a numeric value (confirm the input using the TAB key on the PC keyboard) or by clicking on and pushing the slider to the desired value. Image Sharpness The Image Sharpness improves detail by increasing the sharpness to image outlines. The desired value can be entered as a numeric value (confirm the input using the TAB key on the PC keyboard) or by clicking on and pushing the slider to the desired value. Page 90 of 117
8 Web-based Scan Application Exposure The Exposure control sets the threshold value for the Black Cut function or for the Auto Exposure function. Black Cut This function sets the threshold for black. All pixel values found in the image below the selected value are set to black. Result: The image contrast is improved. Auto Exposure This function sets the threshold for black and activates the automatic exposure control. These functions search the image for the highest and the lowest pixel value. The highest pixel value is defined as white. If the lowest pixel value is higher than the threshold, it is defined as black. Otherwise all values below the threshold are defined as black. Result: Automatic contrast control and the image contrast are improved. Gamma The Gamma slider does the gamma correction directly inside the camera electronics. The desired value can be entered as a numeric value (confirm the input using the TAB key on the PC keyboard) or by clicking on and pushing the slider to the desired value. Three typical settings are available through the check boxes directly below the slider; they are: srgb; Windows & SGI; and Mac OS. Color Gain The Color Gain drop down list changes the gain on a specific channel. This function is used to eliminate any color shift or tints from the background. The drop down arrow for each color allows the operator to change the value in a range; from 0 (default) at center to either (negative) -2dB to a (positive) 2dB, in increments of.1db. 8.1.1.4 Settings Tab The Settings tab contains functions that control the settings for the Infinity Web-based Scan Application as far as over-all look at feel.
