Packard Bell Easy Repair Hard Disk Drives Important Safety Check Instructions You must read all instructions carefully before you begin work and comply with the procedures set out below. Failure to comply precisely with these instructions could lead to injury and / or may damage your computer. You must be 18 or over to install components. You have elected to fix the component yourself and, therefore, represent you have a basic level of computer knowledge and skill required for fitting. Only perform the Easy Repair when you are clear and awake. Make sure that your computer is disconnected from the electricity supply and all cables are removed. Remove all loose articles and items of jewellery before working inside the computer cabinet. Work in a well-lit area on a flat, clean, stable surface free of dust and any other small particles or any debris. Make sure your hands are dry and clean before you begin work. Please be aware that the computer casing may contain sharp edges. You must exercise caution at all times. The components inside your computer are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. You must use the supplied anti-static wrist strap to earth yourself while you work. Failure to do this could damage components inside your computer. Make sure you back-up any data before attempting any fix, if you do not, data may be lost. Follow these fitting instructions carefully. Before you start You will need the following tools: Philips / Cross-head screwdriver Anti-static wrist strap (supplied in your pack) Using the anti-static wrist strap 1. Take the wrist strap and unroll it entirely. The end without the strip of copper should be firmly stuck to your wrist, ensuring optimal contact with your skin. 2. Connect the other end, with the strip of copper, to the clear metal surface of the back of your computer. Make sure this connection remains intact during the entire Easy Repair process. Step 1 - Opening the computer casing Before you can start working inside your PC, you will need to remove the side panel. This allows you to access the components inside. 1. Turn your computer so that you are looking at the back. You will see a black catch as shown in Fig. 1a Fig. 1a Release the retaining catch 2. Some chassis do not lock with a black catch but with regular screws. Carefully unscrew these with the screwdriver and save them. 3. Pull the side panel towards you to release it. Step 2 - Removing the hard disk drive 1. Turn the computer so that you can see and access the internal components. You will find the hard drive at the front of the case (Fig. 3). 2. The hard drive has 2 screws that hold it in place. You will need to remove these using a screw driver (Fig. 4). Take the hard drive out off the PC. This will allow you to remove the cables more easily. Fig. 3 Locate the hard drive Fig. 4 Removing the hard disk drive screws 3. At the rear of the drive you will see 2 cables connected. The grey data cable (IDE or SATA) and a power cable (with a white or black plug). Gently pull these cables out of the drive (hold by the connector and not the cable). Step 3 - Installing the new hard drive 1. Take the new hard drive and replace the power and data cable. IDE data cables Connect the flat grey cable to the long row of pins. You need to connect the cable so that the red or black stripe is next to the power cable. SATA data cables Connect the SATA data cables (grey or red) to the hard drive. You will notice it has an L -shaped connection and can only be fitted one way. Fig. 7 Connect the IDE cable Fig. 8 Connect the SATA cable IDE drive: power cable Connect this cable (white plug) to the socket on the right hand side of the drive with 4 large pins. It can only be connected one way so you cannot get it wrong. SATA drive: power cable Connect this cable (black plug) to the power socket on the drive (the larger socket). 2. IDE-drive: Check the jumper pin position on your old drive. It will be set to Master or Slave or Cable Select. Make sure you set the jumper on your new drive to the same position (Fig. 11). 3. Place the hard drive back into the bay inside the PC and replace the 2 retaining screws. Note: You can find a drawing on the casing of the drive which explains which pins are Master, Slave or Cable Select. Fig. 12 Secure the hard drive Fig. 11 Check hard drive jumper settings 4. Finally, replace the side panel you removed at the start. Slide it onto the casing making sure that it is secure and that no cables are trapped. 5. Step 4 - Re-installing your software Call the help desk and ask them to guide you through the ExtHS process. Please have your Recovery CDs to hand when you call the Easy Repair line. Once you have completed the ExtHS process you will need to re-install Windows and the other software supplied with your Packard Bell computer. To do this follow the steps below: 1. Disconnect all peripheral devices (web cam, printer, scanner, broadband modem etc.). 2. Insert the Packard Bell Master CD 1 / DVD in the top CD / DVD drive and restart your computer. 3. The CD will load and display the following message: Please refer to the section headed Packard Bell Recovery Program in your user s guide for instructions on this utility. Press OK if you want to continue or Cancel to return to DOS. 4. Press the letter O on your keyboard to continue. 5. You will see a menu with options. Please select option 1 Standard System Restore by pressing the 1 key on your keyboard. 6. A warning message about data loss will be displayed. Press the letter O to continue. 7. The process will take around 40 minutes. Once this is done you will need to restart your PC. Remove the CDs and store them in a safe place. 8. If there was a Software Library DVD supplied with your PC you can use this to install the extra software that was supplied with your computer. Insert this into the drive and follow the onscreen instructions. 9. Finally, you will need to install any additional devices (web cam, printer, etc.) and software by following the instructions supplied with them. Version: 1.4 EN Packard Bell Easy Repair 6
