Lessn Outcme The student will analyze the schl s energy use and prpse energy efficient practices thrughut the schl. Ratinale / Purpse fr Lessn Accrding t The Alliance t Save Energy, schls spend mre mney n energy than n cmputers and textbks cmbined. Schls culd save mney by reducing energy use and becming mre energy efficient. By surveying the schl s energy spending, students will familiarize themselves with energy csts in a real-wrld setting and make recmmendatins fr energy efficient practices based n their findings. Thrugh their recmmendatins and prpsals, students will be able t see hw their actins can impact the schl. Hwever, this lessn can als be dne independently. In a class discussin, have students list all f the ways the schl uses energy. Encurage students t think f the energy uses bth in and ut f the classrm. Ask the students what type f things impact energy use. Have student grups cmplete the questins fr their assigned sectin. Have student grups cmpile and reprt their findings t the whle class. If time allws, have students put tgether a presentatin with pictures r ther examples f their findings. Using the gathered infrmatin, have students determine if the schl is using energy wisely r if there are areas that culd be imprved. After students cnsider all f the ways the schl uses energy and pssible areas f imprvement, have each student grup select an area f the schl t prmte energy efficiency. (Areas culd include lighting, windws, drs, fd service, r appliances such as cmputers, and heating and cling.) Fr their selected area, each grup shuld: Define the prblem.
