If you have less than 512 MB, install SAV9 instead. CAUTION: The installation process for this program has seven stages (including the removal of other antivirus programs, if any). These stages must be completed in the order given below. To avoid damage to your computer system, it is also crucial that you finish all the steps in one stage before moving to the next. Installation Process I. II. III. IV. V. VI. VII. Updating your operating system Uninstalling Norton or Symantec AntiVirus (including LiveUpdate) Cleaning up after uninstalling Norton or Symantec programs Uninstalling other antivirus programs Installing SAV10 on Windows XP Running LiveUpdate Configuring your firewall ports NOTE: If you are not thoroughly familiar with this process, you may wish to print out a copy of these instructions (approximately 8 pages) before you begin. During part of the process, you will need to have all other programs closed and will not be able to read these instructions online. In addition, before you begin, it would be helpful to download any cleanup tools you will need in Stages III or IV. I. Updating your operating system Before you begin working with your antivirus software, make sure that you have installed the latest Windows XP updates. II. Uninstalling Norton or Symantec AntiVirus (including LiveUpdate): 4. 6. Close any open applications before you continue. Click on the Start button (usually in the lower left corner of your screen). Select Control Panel. In the Control Panel window, double click on the Add/Remove Programs icon. Scroll down and highlight Norton AntiVirus or Symantec AntiVirus. Click on Remove. When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove this program, select Yes. You will be prompted to decide if you want to restart your computer now. Choose No, since you will be uninstalling another program first. 10. 1 Scroll to LiveUpdate and highlight it. Click on Remove. Confirm that you want to remove the program by selecting Yes. 1 When the program has been uninstalled, you will receive a confirmation message. Select OK.

NC State University 2 of 7 1 Restart your computer. III. Cleaning up after uninstalling Norton or Symantec programs You will also need to run one of the following cleanup tools: If you uninstalled the Norton or Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition distributed by NC State: Download NoNAV (http://www.ncsu.edu/antivirus/files/nonav.exe) and run it. You will need to have administrative privileges for your computer in order to run this. If you uninstalled Norton AntiVirus (a consumer or retail version, not the Corporate Edition distributed by NC State) or Norton Internet Security: Go to http://help.ncsu.edu/solutions/ncsu/3236.php and follow the instructions found there. You will need to use Internet Explorer and have Active X controls enabled in order to use this page as well as a Symantec page to which you will be directed. IV. Uninstalling other antivirus programs These are general instructions for uninstalling most antivirus programs. See your antivirus program's documentation for additional details. 4. Close any open applications before you continue. Click on the Start button (usually in the lower left corner of your screen). Select Control Panel. In the Control Panel window, double click on the Add/Remove Programs icon. In the Add or Remove Programs window, scroll down and highlight the antivirus program you want to uninstall. 6. Click on Remove. If you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove this program, select Yes. If you are prompted to restart your computer now, choose Yes. Visit the Web site of the manufacturer of the antivirus program. Download and run any available tools for cleaning up your computer after that program has been uninstalled. 10. Repeat steps 1 through 9 for each of the other antivirus programs, if any. V. Installing SAV10 on Windows XP Be sure that you have local administrative privileges for the computer on which you will be installing this program. Make sure you are connected to the Internet. Open your Web browser. 4. Download the antivirus program from http://www.ncsu.edu/antivirus/files/sav10.exe (You will need to log in with your Unity ID and password.) We recommend that you save this file to your Desktop. Close your Web browser and any other programs that are running. 6. On your Desktop, double-click on the SAV10.exe icon. This will self-extract in a hidden folder named %temp%.

NC State University 3 of 7 If you get a Security Warning message, select the Run button. When you get a message telling you that you are about to install the program, click on OK. When the Self-extracting Archive window opens, click on Start. The program files will be put into a hidden temporary folder named %temp%. 10. The installation process will begin automatically. In each window, accept the default settings (unless you have a specific need to change one of them) by clicking the Next button. 1 In the license agreement window, mark the button to accept the terms.

NC State University 4 of 7 1 In the Setup Type window, make sure that the button for Complete is marked and click on the Next button. 1 When the installation process has been completed, click on the Finish button. 14. Once installation has finished, LiveUpdate should start automatically, though there may be a short delay. If it starts automatically, connect to the Internet and skip to Step 4 of the instructions for running LiveUpdate (below). If it does not start automatically, begin with Step 1 of those instructions. VI. Running LiveUpdate Make sure that you are connected to the Internet. Double-click on the yellow Symantec AntiVirus shield, located in the right-hand portion of your system tray (at the bottom of the screen). In the Symantec console window that opens, double click on the LiveUpdate button. 4. The LiveUpdate utility will start. Click on the Next button to begin the update process.

NC State University 5 of 7 The virus definitions may take a few minutes to download, depending on the speed of your Internet connection. 6. When the definitions are completely downloaded, click on the Finish button.

NC State University 6 of 7 As LiveUpdate installs the definitions, an Updating Virus Protection Files window will appear. The progress bar will reset itself several times and may take a few moments to finish. When the updating process has finished, the console window should show that the version of the virus definition file is no more than a week old. It may take a few seconds for the new date to appear. New virus definitions are provided by Symantec at least once a week and sometimes daily. Close the console window by selecting the Exit button. VII. Configuring your firewall ports Make sure that you have an active firewall. Open the folder in which the SAV10 files were extracted. The default is the hidden folder %temp%, which you can open quickly as follows: a. Press the Windows key (near the space bar). b. Type: r c. In the dialogue box that appears, type: %temp% d. Press Enter. In this folder, double-click on the file named xpsp2-sav10-firewall.reg. This will open the TCP/IP ports that are required for Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition and

NC State University 7 of 7 LiveUpdate to work correctly. [For details on these ports, see Firewall Ports Required by Symantec AntiVirus 10. For additional information from Symantec on this subject, see Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 firewall prevents remote installation.] If there is an exclamation point over the yellow shield in the system tray at the bottom of your screen (indicating a problem with the installation of SAV10), restart your computer. If the exclamation point is still present after you restart, contact the NC State HelpDesk for assistance. Content updated November 21, 2006 by helee2 Page last modified January 2, 2007 by cawalker
