Muay Thai Boxing A Sport Of Kings. The origins of Muay Thai date back several thousand years, in its original form it was called Muay Boran and was taught to Siamese soldiers for use after losing their weapons in battle. Muay Boran was a ferocious and feared battlefield combat system that adopted the nickname of The Science of Eight Limbs because of the use of eight different points of contact. Some time around 1351ad a platoon of royal guards was established to protect King and Country. These guards were trained in Muay Boran because of its devastating potential. The soldiers formed a regiment and were known as the Muay Kick Fighters Regiment and this patronage continues to present day. The Sport of Muay Thai was born when the country was at a particularly long period of peace, Masters of the art were still teaching the soldiers at purpose built training camps. Scouts were sent between training camps to locate the best practitioners of Muay Boran and contests were arranged between camps. King Rama VII pushed for rules to be made because his finest soldiers were becoming injured or killed at these matches. Hessian rope bindings were replaced with gloves and protective cotton coverlets were used over the ankles and feet, an introduction of referees were introduced at the same time to help protect the soldiers from harm and the sport of Muay Thai was born. Muay Thai is now the national sport of Thailand and students are taught the art at school. Muay Thai is a healthy respectful lifestyle for all starting at a very early age. The respect and traditions of Muay Thai are still passed down through Kru (teacher) to student and Muay Thai is still regarded as one of the most devastating and practical Martial Arts on the planet. Telford Thai Boxing History Unlike many clubs in the area Telford Thai Boxing has an established history, Telford Thai Boxing was initially formed in 1986 and belonged to an organisation run by a former world Muay Thai Champion. In 2006 Kru Jon Perks and Kru Matt Kendall left the organisation and renamed the existing club Telford Thai Boxing. Kru Jon left the club in 2010 due to work and family commitments and handed the club over to Kru Matt. Telford Thai Boxing remains a club owned by members for members, nobody from Telford Thai Boxing takes a penny from the club, and everyone including Kru Matt is a volunteer. An Executive committee consisting of members, member s parents and family members make all decision within the club. Keeping the club a non-profit organisation means that we can keep the costs down for our members. This said, Telford Thai Boxing is run like a business, we have accredited accounts, an annual general meeting, elected officers, public liability insurance and options like standing orders, PayPal payments etc. This has lead to improved customer service and dramatic growth in 2010 & 2011, we now have over 500 students with over 250 being taught each week. Kru Matt started teaching Thai Boxing into Telford & Wrekin schools during 2011 and now teaches Muay Thai as part of PE lessons and after school activities in over 10 schools in the region.

Sparring & Competition Thai Boxing is a contact sport and we encourage contact in our classes as sparring and in competitions called interclub s. Sparring is FUN when kept controlled and safe, we promote sparring but ensure that contact is kept to a minimum. Interclub s are organised with other gyms and are a brilliant form of competition, they are low contact, no winners or losers, and spectators and a referee are present to increase adrenalin. Interclub s are fun for all the family and all competitors get a trophy! Telford Thai Boxing will only introduce sparring when the student is ready and competition is completely optional.
Gradings & Examinations Telford Thai Boxing run a traditional Muay Thai grading syllabus consisting of 10 grades. There are no Dan Grades in Thai Boxing. When a student is ready they will be put forward for an examination called grading, this showcases techniques learned to the chief instructor or a senior instructor from another club. If the student achieves the correct technical level they pass the grading. An examiner may also take into consideration the students performance in class when he makes his decision allowing students who aren t good in exam conditions to achieve their goals. Grading s happen four times a year, although when working toward the more advanced grades it may not be possible to a grading at every opportunity. Everyone who passes a grading is awarded a Kruang Ruang to wear as part of the uniform, this armband signifies the students grade.
