October 2014 C.O.R.E. Golf Tournament The annual C.O.R.E. Golf Tournament took place at Lions Gate in Overland Park on September 15 th, where Jerry Fladung, Nick Hardesty, Gary McCoy, Larry Pickert and Jim Burns assisted by directing parking and unloading golf bags. After doing his stint at the parking lot, Jerry Fladung went on to serve as Monitor on the 8 th hole as required by the hole in one insurance company. Jerry Gerstberger provided transportation for Fr. Tony Licktieg, who recently had knee replacement surgery. John Muehlberger, who is an integral part of and spends a great deal of time in the preparation of the event, was present along with his wife Joan, even though John had recently injured a rib. The Serra Clubs on both sides of the Stateline, along with the Knights of Columbus help put on this Tournament and invite all the Priests, Seminarians and Deacons in the area. This event was originally started by Bob Miller and is held in his honor each year. (article thanks to Larry Pickert) Photos by Bob Luchi 1

. The Leaven recently printed an article concerning Dr. Luchi and his work in the initiation, setting up and running our web site. It seems the old adage, you can t teach an old dog a new trick is not true, as he had to learn new computer languages, and ways of inputting pictures. If you have never taken the time to view our web site, you should give it a look. The web site contains more information about Serra and its events than is possible in the newsletter. It can show videos and slide shows as well as print articles. Serra News First Friday adoration On the first Friday of each month from 11:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M Holy Spirit will be holding a Holy Hour for vocations. It starts with a procession of the Holy Sacrament, Divine Mercy Chaplet (you will be given a card with all the prayers), private adoration, a prayer of Benediction. Then Eucharist Blessing, divine praises and finally a closing Hymn. Dr. Luchi is now working on being able to accept reservations and payments for Serra events such as the Memorial Mass and Dinner (which is coming up). You will able to fill out, send your reservation and make payment from your computer. Kansas City Serrans are not the only ones signing on to the site but people in other parts of the country as well as Brazil, Italy, UK, Mexico, Portugal, Paraguay, Canada and France have also checked out the Serra Club of Kansas City in Kansas web site http://serrakck.org If you know people who show an interest in Serra, refer them to our web site for a peek at what we are all about. From a personal point of view I think we have the best Serran web site out there, and in my position as editor, I have reviewed quite a few and they are basically the same as the standardized newsletters of most clubs just listing prayer lists and upcoming events. Priesthood Sunday is October 26th We should offer up a special prayer for those who have become or are in the process of becoming Priests. National Vocation Awareness Week is November 2nd through the 8th. Originally it was to start on the 28th Sunday of the year as established by the Convention of Catholic Bishops in 1975. However this year they moved it to the first week of November. This would be a good time to consider adopting a Seminarian if you have not already. 3

Mundelein Trip A Trip to Mundelein is Scheduled for October 30 31 2014. This trip is being set up by the Serra Club of Johnson County, with Bill Myers acting as liaison. To keep everything simple, we ask that you go through Bill with any questions, as he will have the itinerary and will get you signed up for the trip. We have been advised you can get a reduced rate on accommodations as Serra has reserved a block of rooms. Because of this they would like to know how many are going as early as possible, so they can give a final tally. 6
