Before Your Surgery Please review the checklist below i preparatio for your surgery: Medical clearace your surgeo may recommed a geeral medical evaluatio by your primary-care physicia to make sure you are healthy eough for surgery. Tests blood samples ad other tests, such as EKGs, echocardiograms or urie samples, may be required as part of your routie preoperative evaluatio. Educatio visit our website, www.uclahealth.org/orthospieifo, for detailed iformatio about your hospital stay. Medicatios make a list of your medicatios ad brig it with you to our hospital. Please do NOT brig your medicatios. Our Pharmacy will provide you with ay medicatios you eed. If you have questios or cocers about drug availability, cosult with your physicia. About Your Care Legth of stay pla to be i our hospital for 3 to 4 days. Discharge plaig our goal is to help you retur home directly from our hospital, but placemet i a rehab facility ca be arraged, if ecessary. You may wat to arrage for help at home with activities of daily livig, icludig bathig, dressig, cookig ad shoppig, while you are recuperatig. Complicatios as with ay surgery, there is a possibility of complicatios such as blood clots, ifectio ad lug cogestio. Be sure to review these risks with your physicia prior to surgery. Day of Surgery You will check i through our Admissios Departmet ad the be directed to our Procedure ad Treatmet Uit (PTU) to be prepped for surgery. Oe family member may accompay you to the PTU, where you will meet your pre-operative urse ad aesthesiologist. Oce your surgery is completed (usually 2-3 hours), you will be awakeed gradually i our Post-Aesthesia Care Uit (PACU). This process takes approximately 2 hours. No family members are allowed i this room. Your surgeo will brief your family while you are i our PACU. Oce you are awake, your vital sigs are stable ad your pai is cotrolled, you will be trasferred to your hospital room. You will have a overhead trapeze attached to your bed to assist you with mobility. Our team members will show you how to properly use it. Your leg may also be i a positioig device called a Kodel slig or you may have a special foam (abductio) pillow placed betwee your legs. You will receive atibiotics for 24 hours after surgery to prevet ifectio. You will also receive a blood-thiig medicatio to prevet clots. Our staff will focus o helpig you with pai cotrol, ausea maagemet, startig a liquid diet ad gettig restful sleep. 4

Our Care Team Durig your hospital stay, you will meet may members of our health care team who work together to provide you with excellet care. These iclude: Registered Nurse will assess your overall coditio, aswer questios, commuicate with your doctors ad give you medicatios. Care Parter is resposible for takig care of your basic eeds, icludig recordig vital sigs ad assistig with persoal hygiee ad toiletig. Residet Doctors your surgeo works with a team of residet doctors who will visit you daily ad ca be reached o a 24-hour basis. Physical Therapist if idicated, you will be visited by a physical therapist (PT) to evaluate your mobility both i bed ad while walkig. Occupatioal Therapist You also may be visited by a occupatioal therapist (OT) who will evaluate how well you are able to complete activities of daily livig, icludig dressig, bathig ad toiletig. Phlebotomist will take blood samples each morig as directed by your physicia. Case Maager will assist i plaig for your discharge to home or a rehab facility. Durable Medical Equipmet Vedor will coordiate orderig ad delivery of ay equipmet you may eed for home, icludig walkers, crutches, bedside commodes ad sock aids. After Surgery Day 1 You will be istructed about how much weight you ca place o your surgical leg, called weight-bearig status. After your surgery, there will be precautios regardig the movemet of your surgical leg that you must follow to prevet hip dislocatio. These are called hip precautios. Oe of our team members will review them with you. PT Evaluatio You will likely be evaluated by a physical therapist the morig after your surgery. The evaluatio usually icludes gettig out of bed, walkig, as tolerated, ad basic exercise istructio. You will have aother PT sessio i the afteroo. OT Evaluatio You also may be evaluated by a occupatioal therapist to assess your ability to care for yourself ad istruct you i usig adaptive equipmet (reacher, sock aid), as eeded. Our ursig staff will cotiue to make sure your eeds are met ad your pai is well cotrolled. You will resume a ormal diet, as tolerated. 6

After Surgery Day 2 Begi trasitio to oral pai medicatio. Get out of bed for meals ad walk to the bathroom with assistace, as eeded. Our PT staff will cotiue workig with you o mobility ad preparatio for discharge, icludig techiques for gettig out of bed, improvig walkig tolerace ad curb/stair traiig. You will cotiue to be see by our PT staff twice daily while you are i our hospital or util you meet your therapy goals. After Surgery Day 3 ad Beyod Cotiue plas of care as described above. You will leave our hospital with all the iformatio you eed to esure a smooth trasitio to home or a rehab facility. Our goal is to help you resume a ormal, active lifestyle. After Hospital Discharge Cotiue to follow your hip precautios util your surgeo idicates you ca move your surgical leg freely. Cotiue performig the leg exercises taught to you by our PTs. If you are discharged to home, a PT will likely evaluate you at your home to determie how much home physical therapy, if ay, is eeded. The staples used to close your surgical icisio will be removed by a home health urse 10 to14 days after surgery. You will ot be able to bathe util the staples are removed as soakig the woud ca cause ifectio. Twice weekly, a home health urse will visit you to draw a small blood sample to determie the appropriate dose of your bloodthiig medicatio. Your doctor s office will cotact you if ay medicatio chages are eeded. Talk with your surgeo about the timelie for returig to a higher level of daily activities, icludig workig, drivig ad more vigorous exercise.
