Frequently asked questions: Who owns and operates The Sequoias? The Sequoias, a non-denominational community, is owned and operated by Northern California Presbyterian Homes and Services (NCPHS), a notfor-profit organization founded in 1958. NCPHS oversees seven communities and several community service programs throughout Northern California. A non-compensated Board of Directors and trustees, comprised of talented professionals from the region, guides NCPHS in achieving its vision and mission in serving older adults. NCPHS works continually to ensure that its history of leadership in the field and its commitment to older adults will continue into the future. What does a Life Care contract offer? Reduced exposure to significant health care costs: The monthly fee does not change when you move to Skilled Nursing, Assisted Living and Memory Care, and the entrance fee helps to cover the cost differential. Ongoing community improvements: Through a commitment to capital projects, our campuses are kept up to date. Entrance fees serve as one source of funds for these projects. What does it cost to move to The Sequoias? Please refer to our fee schedule included in this packet for information on entrance fees. Is any portion of the entrance fee refundable? The Sequoias has several contracts. All contracts are subject to a 90-day cancellation period during which time you are eligible for a refund of your entrance fee, less a deduction of a reasonable fee to cover the costs of cancellation and the reasonable value of the accommodations, care, and services rendered. Under the Life Care and Continuing Care Contracts, The Sequoias is contractually obligated to refund the entrance fee less an amount equal to 1.5% of the entrance fee for each month of residency for voluntary termination. No refund is made after 5½ years. In the event of death, The Sequoias will refund a portion of the entrance fee as follows: Less than 90 Days 90% 91 days to one year 75% > 1 year to 2 years 50% > 2 years to 3 years 25% > 3 years 0% Under the 90% Repayment Continuing Care Contract, anytime you leave, 90% of what you paid is repaid when the apartment is re-contracted. Will I still need my health insurance? Are there deductibles and/or time limits? Medicare or equivalent coverage is a requirement for acceptance at The Sequoias. The Life Care monthly fee covers Medicare copayments and deductibles. Once you start paying your monthly fee, there is no waiting period or time limit on coverage of deductible and copayments. In the Continuing Care Contract, you are responsible for Medicare copayments, deductibles, and other out-of-pocket health expenditures. Why would I move to a Life Care community if I have long-term care insurance? At The Sequoias the cost of long-term care is covered, whereas many long-term care insurance plans expose you to daily expense limits and elimination periods. Typically these plans offer limits of $100/ day to $300/day and may be insufficient to cover actual costs. An elimination period requires you to wait a specified number of days, often 30 to 90+ days, before your policy reimburses you for your care. During this waiting period, you could have to pay 100% of these costs of care. These amounts can be substantial. With long-term care insurance, premium expenses and arrangement for the delivery of care are often ongoing concerns. The average monthly premium for a 70-year-old for a $100 daily limit with lifetime inflation protection and a 30-day waiting period would be $646 per month. (Source: California Department of Insurance) One of the advantages of Life Care is the availability of care provided by experienced staff in the comfort of familiar surroundings with the companionship of family and friends. If you wish to retain your long-term care insurance, The Sequoias will offset your monthly fee with the reimbursement from your insurance carrier during a Skilled Nursing or Assisted Living covered stay that qualifies under the conditions of your policy. If I need Skilled Nursing, Assisted Living or Memory Care, will I pay higher monthly fees? Can I retain my own physician? If you have a Life Care Contract, when you or your spouse/partner need Skilled Nursing, Assisted Living or Memory Care, there is no change in your monthly fee. Residents with the Continuing Care Contract will pay the market rate. Yes, you can retain your physician. You assume responsibility for physician service copayments and deductibles not covered by Medicare. The Life Care Contract will still cover 24-hour emergency call systems, on-site clinic, Skilled Nursing, Assisted Living, and Memory Care. What are the benefits for Kaiser members? The Sequoias has arranged with Kaiser to provide you with the same 24-hour emergency call system, on-site clinic, Assisted Living, and medical benefits described above. If you choose to retain Kaiser, however, you are designating Kaiser as the manager of your medical needs and the sole recipient of your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits. Consequently, your physician appointments, therapy visits, and hospitalization, must be provided at Kaiser sites. Assisted Living or long-term Skilled Nursing would be provided at The Sequoias and would be covered by your monthly fee. Short-term Skilled Nursing care after a hospital stay that is covered by Medicare Part A would be paid by Kaiser and provided at The Sequoias. We provide limited transportation to Kaiser facilities. What happens when a resident needs more assistance? Skilled Nursing, Assisted Living and Memory Care are available with no increase in the current monthly care fee for Life Care residents. After rehabilitative care in Skilled Nursing, nursing staff is available to make house calls for the remainder of a resident s recovery. Private duty support is permissible at the resident s expense and within licensing guidelines established for safety. What health and fitness programs are offered? Life Care communities excel in providing an extensive array of professionals, resources and programs to promote good health and well-being, and help residents prolong their independence. A wide variety of fitness, wellness and preventive health programs are available through the Activities Department and the clinic staff. Classes to help residents improve balance and reduce the risk of falls and injury include yoga, Big Band Exercise and strength training. Classes in health and nutrition topics, routine screening and support groups are also available. Why is it important that The Sequoias is accredited? Accreditation confirms that a retirement community meets the national standards for the quality of health programs, resident life, financial strength and administration. Are pets allowed? In general, dogs and cats are allowed, (subject to weight limits), and other small pets that do not pose a danger to residents and staff are allowed. How do I become a resident at The Sequoias? For more information on residency at The Sequoias, please call our Director of Marketing at (415) 351-7900. FAQs
